  1. Episode 1 - Thursday, October 25, 2007 @ 8PM ET THE BACKYARD BOWL: THE NATION’S TOP HIGH SCHOOL RIVALRY UNION REDSKINS vs. JENKS TROJANS TULSA, OK Considered the premiere high school rivalry in the country by most prep football fans, this annual rivalry game is played at University of Tulsa to approximately 35,000 fans. Union and Jenks are two of the top rated programs in the country, and have collectively won the last 11 Oklahoma state 6A titles for themselves, with Jenks claiming the title last season. Jenks and Union are located just five miles apart, and have been competing on the gridiron since 1946. The Backyard Bowl gained its moniker, official sponsor, and traveling trophy in 2004. Since then, Jenks has won all non-district match-ups against Union. This is an NFL Films documentary. Visit My Website
  2. Did I say, "Douglas, Burnett, and Clement didn't play in the fourth quarter." No! I said Maryville played a lot of players after they got a comfortable lead. Which they ususally do. Also, Pat Ryan said that West gave Maryville their best game of the year. Sorry Pat, this honor goes to WB.
  3. Maryville played a lot of people in the second half of this game when they had a comfortable lead. West still went with the 1's.
  4. I think los gobernadores will defeat los almirantes. The espadas over the estrellas.
  5. I would like to see Maryville play Union High School from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  6. I know when my kids were at Union they used the heck out of their field out there. With the new turf you can let the football team practice on it as well as the band. The soccer teams and rugby teams can also play/practice on it. The middle schools, Freshmen etc and it will hold up. I prefer natural grass, but with all the demands on the main field it is a good alternative. This is the first I have heard about this at Maryville. Are they looking at Fieldturf or Sprinturf?
  7. I went to the following Sequoyah High Schools websites to see how they portrayed the native american imagry at each school. I went to Sequoyah High in Tahlequah, Oklahoma (Nickname Indians), I went to Sequoyah High in Claremore, Oklahoma (Nickname Eagles) and Sequoyah High in Monroe County, Tennessee (Nickname Chiefs). The first one, in Tahlequah, is owned and run by the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. It is a school run by Cherokee's for Cherokee's (they have a nationally ranked girls basketball team also). The second one, Sequoyah High in Claremore, Oklahoma, the whole school district is named Sequoyah Public Schools, this is the name of the school district so with only one high school in the district it is Sequoyah High. Their website was new and I couldn't find anything about the sports teams. The last one I went to was the website for Sequoyah High in Monroe County. When the webpage opened I saw this image: I knew immediatly that this was not Sequoyah. I clicked on the image and it said in the properties "A_typical_Nez_Perce.jpg" This is Sequoyah: When the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation gave Monroe County Schools permission to use the name Sequoyah, they probably though that an educational institution would not play fast and loose with the facts. If a child turned in a research paper with incorrect imagery they would fail. This is the problem with native american nicknames. Great care should be taken to make sure everything is historically accurate and correct. One of my children goes to Sam Houston Elementary School in Maryville. They have taken great care to make sure that Sam Houston is honored and is portrayed historically. Do you think they have any old photo in the lobby. No. They have Sam Houston. Does William Blount High School have any old picture in their lobby. No they have a depiction of William Blount. The same goes for Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett and others that are named after real people. So why put up a plains indian picture instead of a photo of Sequoyah. Why refer to your new assistant principal as the "Lady Chief in Charge" on your website. I'm not for legislation on this matter. I just think people need to realize that this is important. The facts and history are important.
  8. Have you even been to east TN? Oh, that's right. You went up to Pigeon Forge to get your car out of the museum. I thought the ghost of Buford Pusser would go back to McNairy County instead of Rutherford County. Blount County has 19 State Championships in Football. What does Rutherford have?
  9. Has MoTown decided how they are going to paint the field? Will one endzone say East and one West? Will they have an M in the middle of the field or a big W?
  10. I don't know about Alabama or Florida, but if Maryville was in Oklahoma they would be 6A just looking at the numbers. If the Oklahoma system was used in TN Maryville would be 5A in a 6 classification system. The term 5A, 6A or some of the confusing terms they use in VA or NC are all relative to the state you are in. Oklahoma says, "The top 32 teams in enrollment are 6A". It doesn't matter what the cut off is. Half the teams in the state make the playoffs and they only last 4 weeks. I like our system better (TN).
  11. I thought it was the Disabled List. Thanks for setting us straight.
  12. I froze last year at Burke-Toney and had to sit in the aisle. It will be good to be at home this year. It is always good if you are still practicing on Thanksgiving.
  13. I believe the put coverage team is one of the reasons they are driving to Kingsport instead of Sevierville.
  14. FBE-That school in Tulsa, OK was Union High School. Union is down this year but still ranked in the top 10 in the State of OK in 6A. Union won the 6A State Championship last year and has won 3 out of the last 4 6A championships. They have a brand new coach and a brand new system. Starting out 0-3 was tough under a new coach. Kinda reminds me of the year GQ started 0-4.
  15. Maryville/Alcoa in Week 5 was kinda like the "3rd Saturday in October" for a long time. I would like to see it go back to Week 5.
  16. The Mid-Con did play their conference tournament at the UMAC. My kids were excited to see their old school on TV. We wanted to watch Union vs. Hoover on TV also but it wasn't on in Maryville for some reason. The UMAC only seats about 5,600 for basketball but every seat is a good one. I should know, my tax dollars helped pay for it. The Mabee Center is the largest arena in Tulsa at this time. The problem with the Mabee Center is its old design and oval shaped arena floor.
  17. Lets see if this years Hoover team can end Union's home winning streak @ Tuttle Stadium. GO REDSKINS Friday night on FSN 8:30 EDT 7:30 CDT
  18. I am a Maryville native who spent 6 years in Tulsa, OK where my kids attended Union Public Schools. I am convinced that MHS could play with Union. I also think that the Maryville/Alcoa Football game should have been on some type of TV. In Oklahoma the two largest metro areas all had COX cable. Cox would show a OKC area high school game on Friday night and a Tulsa area team on Thursday night in both markets. We also need to fix up the facilites a bit. Chair back seats for season ticket holders would be nice (I am one). Union is playing Hoover, Alabama on Sept. 1 on national TV. What great exposure for both schools and the Birmingham and Tulsa areas. Maybe when we get to be 5A we will be able to schedule other teams like that if we are in the same district as WB and Heritage. GO REBELS GO UNION REDSKINS
  19. Technically doesn't East Tennessee start at the central/eastern time zone line. I really don't know where Upper east Tennessee starts. I always thought of Mo-Town as being in the Knoxville area and Greeneville as being in the Tri-Cities area so there must be some type of vortex separating the two areas. I guess the real difference is what TV stations you watch. 6, 8, 10, Knoxville. 5, 11, 19 Tri-Cities. I just want to be clear on who I can nominate.
  20. Come on WB fans. Where are you at on this one. It seem like most of the posts are from NW. Is the team going down today (friday) or tomorrow (saturday)?
  21. They are making a Movie about the Union vs. Jenks rivalry. I believe it is called "King of the Mountain". Instead of watching the MTV version of Hoover, I am looking forward to the live version on FSN when Hoover comes to Tuttle Stadium to play "The U" Tuttle is one awesome high school stadium. You can see the U and Union in the endzones on maps.google.com There is also a 5,500 seat arena in one endzone and a jumbotron in the other endzone. If you want to look at the stadium from space on maps.google.com it is near 71st Street and Mingo Rd. slightly north of 71st street. GO UNION
  22. I'll put that on on the list. Now why didn't they go with the Bulls as a nickname though. I still think Bearden ought to be called the Bears though.
  23. I like the new "Virgina" uniforms that WB is sporting these days. I never did really care for the "Florida" looking uniform. Of course I am old school since I played for Coach White. We had white helmets with an interlocking WB. The first two years we had blue jerseys and my senior year we switched to orange jerseys. In response to the Maryville Red Raiders talk. Back in the day there was a team at all three Maryville Elementary schools. The Southerners/Rebs at Sam Houston. The Cubs/Bears at Ft. Craig and the "Baby Vols" at John Sevier. The Fairview "Panthers" used to practice at Monte Vista Baptist Church which is well within the present city limits. I believe this team later became the Raiders. There was also a team called the Westside Raiders out that way. Did they merge or is this team the Fairview Raiders. I believe this change has more to do with the westward population shift than anything else. By the way I found my '73 Cubs ALUMINUM BOWL trophy in the basement the other day.....
  24. Cool thread. Now someone needs to compile a list.
