STRANGE CALLS BY UMPIRES

Against Hunters Lane, MBA had the bases loaded with one out. Guy hits a pop fly ball to the short who loses it in the sun. Ball bounces right in front of him and turns a double play. Infield fly rule never called. I thought that was the whole point of the rule.

Umpires exuse was the SS did not give "original effort." If you have ever heard of that, I will stand corrected.

the call SHOULD be that if the infielder has the opportunity to make the catch it is an infield fly

I have actually seen an infield fly rule called when the ball was hit a good twenty feet into the outfield but the SS got under it easily so i guess he was right

All I know is I would love to be an umpire! Those guys have full control of everything that goes on in the game, and most of them are so cocky is sickening. I was doing the Public adress anouncing for the Cumberland County Lady Jet Softball regional game last season, and the ump threw me out for questioning one of his calls. He was being inconsistent, and somebody needed to let him know what was happening. I just wish I was an Umpire so I could have that kind of power!!! :D

i dont know about funny, but i saw a pretty crappy call tonight in the Siegel- Cookeville game.  Runner on first, no outs, bottom of the 7th, Siegel ahead by 1 run.  Straight steal, called strike on the pitch, batter takes a step forward in the box and stands there. the catcher FAKES a throw.  the umpire, who had been decent up to this point, calls batter interference, calls the batter out, and makes the runner go back to first.  He cannot make this call because the catcher did not attempt to throw the runner at 2nd, nor did he plan on it.  the runner got a great jump and was gonna beat the throw easily.  The catcher decided not to throw and just pump faked.  The 2005 Baseball Rules Interpretations from nfhs.org state that the catcher has to ATTEMPT to throw the runner out for interference to be called.  Therefore, the umpire is wrong, batter isnt out, runner stays at second, and who knows what might have happened after that, but dont take it out of the kids hands!  they do the work in practice, let them decide it on the field! not you.

...Tough judgement call to make. I know this, if there were no outs, the runner should have been declared out. Batter is out for interference only if there are two outs.

If you are the public address announcer, especially for a regional tournament game, you are supposed to be impartial. He had every right to throw you out. It is not your place to question an umpire's calls, especially if you did it over the PA system.

You obviously were making a jerk of yourself? Is it your power to use you position to give the ump a hard time? I'm suprised you were allowed to return. Period.

Ok, if this doesn't stop, baseball fans will knock-off soccer fans as the whinest fans around. This is ridiculous. Baseball has 5,234,897 rules and usually only about 10 are enforced. How is everyone supposed to know every rule? Baseball umpires have to know more than any other sport's offical. Cut them some slack, and SHUT UP!!

Grace, most of the posts on this thread are in good humor. Yeah, some are being said with a chip on the shoulder of the poster, but many are just replying to the name of the topic "Strang Calls by umpires". Stranges calls and blown calls can be different things.

Blown call that is very strange... 2 years ago, district tournament, I hit a ball over the fence in right field about 20 feet from the foul line. The wind was blowing from center to right fairly hard. The ball I hit was hooking from the time it left the bat. When the ball landed, it was close to the line about 30 ft. past the fence. I was almost to 2nd base when the home plate umpire yelled "foul". He stated that it was foul because it landed foul. lol To go one step farther, I stepped back in the box with a full count on me. The next pitch was wide and in the dirt, the catcher had to dive into the right hander's batters box to stop it (I was batting left handed at the time). I flipped my bat towards the dugout and started to first. The umpire rung me up. Needless to say, I wasn't very happy at the time.

But to make you happy Grace, this same umpire also called some really good games and made some great judgement calls last year.

SITUATION 8: With one out and R2 at first base stealing on the pitch, B3 interferes with the catcher’s throw to second base. R2 is easily safe since he had a great jump on the pitch and would have had the base stolen without the batter’s interference. The offensive team’s coach argues that R2 should be allowed to stay on second base since he clearly had it stolen. RULING: B3 is out for his interference and R2 must return to first base. When the batter interferes with the catcher’s attempt to throw out a runner stealing second base, and the attempt is unsuccessful, the ball is dead, the batter is out and all runners must return to bases occupied at the time of the pitch. (7-3-5 Penalty)

I don't think Attempt means he actually has to release the ball. If he just sets to throw, his attempt would be unsuccessful - see what I mean?

I think the key word was 'fake'. How's the umpire supposed to know he's faking? The whole purpose of the fake is to throw off the opponent........and the umpires have been clued in to what's happening.

I've got a couple of 'strange' calls. I was on a 4 man crew in a LL state tournament last year and a right handed kid swings very late but hits a line drive that clears the outfield fence by about a foot and bounces in the parking lot behind right field. The umpire at first has responsibility on fly balls to that side and I slid over towards first to pick up the runner and easily saw the ball go over the fence. The umpire at first holds up 2 fingers and stops the runner at second. Noone argued at all. I think the ball got out so fast and it was a chain link fence without any background that noone thought he was wrong and he sold the call. After the inning was over he comes over and says, "Was that ball a home run?".

It's tough to call the perfect game and the umpires are harder on themselves than the fans if they blow one. There's usually a little evaluation session going on in the parking lot after the game between umpires. The toughest calls are the ones you can't get back like calling foul on a ball that's tipped into the catcher's mitt or the bunt that rolls back into fair territory and everyone knows you screwed up. Most of the rest are judgement calls and coaches and fans have to live with it. To the PA announcer that was harassing the umpire behind the plate. I wouldn't have tossed you, but you'd have been announcing from a different location. Those of us that umpire would probably take up a collection to pay your TSSAA dues and get you some games.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
