Should Maryville and Melrose move up?

I was looking at some records of school enrollment for last year. Maryville and Melrose both had over 1400 listed. That was tops for 4A football. Then there was Elizabethton and Johnson County that both had under 800. So Maryville and Melrose almost double Elizabethton and Johnson County's enrollment. I'm not saying that is the reason that Maryville and Melrose have excellent teams, but is it fair to the small schools that play 4A? I remember Elizabethton getting beat by Maryville two years in row in the state-semi's. I know it would be just as easy for Eliz. and J.C. to move to 3A. But I just think that they should lower the enrollment for 4A schools, then causing the big 4A schools to move up to 5A.

I wonder how Murville stayed at the 4a level. Clue: they have a board of director as an ######'t. prinicpal. Coincidence, maybe, maybe not. But they are the largest 4A school in the state.

 

What would have happened if the entire county of Williamson had not moved their schools up to 5a for money and travel reasons.

 

Have heard for two years that the next go round for classification that Murville will be 5a.

 

Only time will telll if they can dominate 5a the way they have 4a.

Well... they dont really go by the total number of students like u think they do. OK say that there are only able to be 25 5a teams, and the biggest 5a school has 2000 kids and the 25th biggest school has 1500 kids then the schools that fall in that 1500-2000 student range would be 5a. So there for u get a really big 4a school with 1499 kids, but it doesnt matter because there are 25 other teams that have that many more than they do. It goes something like that, i found that out after thinking that Anderson Co should be in 4a with them having like 1000 and somthing students i belive and somebody explained it to me. But as far as playing ability goes, yea i think they should go 5a.

I'm in no way assocaited with Maryville (or Melrose for that matter), but I always get a good laugh of how so many people try to discredit their success in any way possible.

I never said their size was the reason for their success. But I think there is more players to choose from with a school that has 1400. I'm no genius but it is kind of obvious that a school with 1400 students has a better chance of beating a school with 800 almost every time.

It's not like Maryville and Melrose have been utterly unchallenged in 4A; if they had, I'd be calling for them to move up. They've faced tough competition from schools much smaller than them. They could compete very successfully in 5A, but they have every right to stay in 4A, where they're standout teams, but certainly not the only good squads.

it does seem kinda odd to me that maryville is bigger than some 5a schools and have had the option of moving up.yet they dont..that way theycould really prove if they are a powerhouse among the best in TN
