I agree, and I think it goes back to the original dilution from 3 classes to 5. I attended all the clinic bowls in the 80s with my dad. It was one of the best sporting events to go to regardless of who was playing. I was there in '88 when (I think) dickson county and jefferson county sold out Vanderbilt for the game.

 

I can't understand why the game is played in Murfreesboro, especially considering there is no bond at all between Murfreesboro and the any of the super 7, not to mention that the leadership of a certain high school there was responsible for orchestrating the split in the first place. I highly doubt there will be many murfreesboro residents who will walk up to watch two private schools from anywhere play, much less from Memphis. I also doubt that many interested Nashvillians from MBA, Ryan, Ensworth, BA, etc. will trek out to Murfreesboro, but would go to Vanderbilt.

 

my suggestion is to rotate the game among the three primary cities--Nashville, memphis, and chattanooga--and play it Thanksgiving day, as the Clinic Bowl was originally done in the 50's.

Amen. Oh, there is a bond between Murfreesboro and the Div II playoffs, it right off I-24 on Warrior Dr. Maybe not a good bond but a bond none the less.

Just a comment. There are now 8 teams in DII - AAA but you can still call it the "Super Seven" if you want.

It's a familiarity issue...also, we're trying to be like the 11-member Big Ten.

Congratulations to Memphis University School on a hard-fought, well deserved state championship. I'll be interested to see how the game unfolded when the TSSAA posts the second-half stats.

Looks like the Memphis fans traveled relatively well, considering the 250-mile drive to Murfreesboro - attendance of 4,029.

 

Congrats to MUS. Two titles in a row, and I'd say a decent chance to contend next year for a third DII title, although the Owls lose quite a few key linemen and defenders. Having Park back at QB will be big for MUS.

 

Once again, the league should be pretty balanced next year. Brentwood Academy probably will be the favorite in the preseason.

I can honestly say that in all my life, throughout all the sporting events I have participated in, or seen as a spectator...never once have I truly belived the officiating decided the outcome. However, after watching this game, I felt as if the officals simply called a horrible game. They were letting MUS get by on holding all night, as well as quite a few calls that CBHS should have been nailed with. During MUS's last drive, I believe the officiating was terribble. On the other hand, both teams did a heck a job and played a great game.

That is such a typical response by a sisters' fan. im sure that cbhs comitted absolutey zero penalties all game. you just cant handle the fact we out-played and out coached you. plus i noticed not many of yall hung around after the game...were you just to ashamed to own up to yet another loss to the buzzards? you can make all the excuses you please..the fact is we are back to back state champs and yall are still just a bucnch of purple wearing pansies. Wow, what a great game! MUS and CBHS were the two best teams all year, and proved to be evenly matched as well. Congratulations to MUS. Back-to-Back is very tough in any division.

 

Now on to basketball/wrestling/swimming...whatever you follow or participate in. Kinda partial to basketball myself!

I totally disagree........ As a Middle Tennessean, with no ties to any private school, I was in attendance simply to watch a 'great' high school football game, and that's what I got! On the last drive, the late hit out of bounds was obvious, as was the 2 CBHS players that lined up in the 'neutral' zone on the 4th down and short.

 

CBHS, who is a very good team in my opinion, simply made some mistakes at the wrong time. The refs did not determine the outcome.

 

Don't forget, prior to the last drive by MUS, CBHS had the ball in the "red zone", but threw an interception. I believe that the interception and the 'double' pass that went for a touchdown by MUS, were the two biggest plays of the game.

 

This was a 'great' high school football game, between two exceptional teams, and it should not be diminished with the misguided mindset of "blaming the refs".

Last year's DII-AAA atendance (at Vandy) was listed as 4,000. I am sure that figure was an estimate. So, this year's attendance was about the same (4029)without a Middle Tennessee school in the finals. 1A attendance was 1147 and 2A was 2317.

TV, eight state champs, etc. - a lot of contributing factors.

 

Take a look at 2004 attendance in DI title games on an attendance-to-combined enrollment basis. The higher the class, the worse the attendance. The I-A game had over 7 fans per enrolled student; the I-AAAA and I-AAAAA games had about 2 fans per enrolled student.

 

DII-AAA had over 5 fans per enrolled student in 2004, which would have been good for second best in DI.
