g2ghiking
If Karns beats Science Hill and Campbell County but loses to DB and Cumberland County, their record would be 3-7 but they would make the playoffs, I think.
ihavenofriendzz
haha... Karns. I wonder when they will "turn the corner".. Coach Fulkerson says when they "turn the corner" they will be 9-2. or better every year. haha. or maybe 8-3 or better.. but still. haha. rollredroll
Sure, a 3-7 team can make the playoffs. Teams 2-8 even have made the playoffs in the past.
jabbo
And even 1-9!
5A football fan
how can a 1-9 team make it?
jabbo
5 teams in the region - 5th place goes 0-4 in region play, 4th place goes 1-3, and 4th place loses all the non-region games. According to the TSSAA website http://www.tssaa.org/schdir/fbstandings2003.htm Howard made it with a 1-8 record.

jabbo
I don't think there's a better way to do it, short of having a tournament with loser brackets, and that ain't really feasible. 4th seeds have won the state championship, but I'm sure no 1-9 teams have pulled that off. Yes, there is a better way. Go back to the days when you had two games before the championship game. Right now a team that makes it to the championship game plays 15 games. One short of the pros and one more then college teams that play in a conference title and then a bowl game. I don't remember when they changed it, but it is ridiculous for a team with a losing season to make the playoffs.
g2ghiking
Thanks for the info. That same year (2003), in 3A region 1, the 3-7 team was the third seed ahead of a 2-8 team. What a hoot! Class 3A, Region 1 Region Overall Team W L W L 1 Seymour 5 0 9 1 2 Rutledge 4 1 7 3 3 Sullivan North 3 2 3 7 4 Pigeon Forge 2 3 2

But then a team in third or fourth place in their region doesn't get an opportunity to win it all, yet it happens under the current system. A team in a tough region that plays really tough nonregion teams can get the shaft under the old system. I think it was in '98 that at the end of the regular season Oakland was ranked #1, Riverdale #3 and Lincoln County #5 - and they were all in the same region. Besides, I would really enjoy watching my team play 15 games rather than just 13!!! The season is never long enough for me!
formerblazer
Back when Region 1 4A only had 6 teams.........it was very possible to get to the playoffs with only 3 wins. Actually, 2 wins could get you in if everything played out right.
