Elizabethton beat North in the jamboree tonight in a 15 minute game, 28-19. Honestly it wasnt really that close. I think Michaela and Marti had 8 each; Victoria and Kelli 5 each; Mariah 2. Cyclones got all 12 in the action for several minutes each. Still got lots to work on. Good to see Hopson and Jones back on the floor.

Boys lost by 7. Collie hurt his hand. Hope its just a bruise.

DB thursday night at the Buck Dome in K-sport should be a good HOF game to watch. Go Cyclones!

I attended the Watauga Valley Conference jamboree tonight and need I say there could be some suprises this year. Cloudland defeated North Greene in the first contest of the night by about 15 North Greene is a little down this year as for Cloudland They came out playing hard and went very deep into there bench showing they have alot of young talent they can bring in the game very deep and athletic Cloudland team.

Second game of the night Unaka defeated University School 22 to 18 I believe. Unaka played almost everyone through out the whole game they have probably the best overall talent in the conference once they get the taylor girl back. University High led most of the game until around the last minute in a half then Unaka hit a bucket to put them a head to go along with another bucket shortly afterwards. Univeristy High could surprise some teams this year. They are very guard athletic and crash the boards really well look for them to possibly make an impact.

The final girls game of the night was Hampton defeating a weak Providence Academy team. Hampton came out of the gates on fire not only on the offensive end but on the defensive end as well. Hampton looked really well diccaplined on the offensive end being patient knocking down alot of big shots and forcing Providence to turn the ball over from there full court pressure numerous amount of times. Dont underestimate this Hampton team they are loaded with shooters and play very hard on the defensive end I wouldnt be surprised if they dont give Unaka and Cloudland a run for there money in the conference.

But overall good games tonight and hopefully they will be even better once the season progresses...Good luck to all teams. B)

Good post, pickup22. Hope you'll stay with us throughout the season.

Cloudland's strength is Depth, and they'll need all of it to compensate for the graduations of Jessica Lunsford and Heather Banner.

The Unicoi County Lady Blue Devils play at Cloudland on Tuesday, the 28th, just two days before hosting the Lady Rangers. Those early-season Tri-County Seven matchups will tell us a lot. If Cloudland's half-court offense can consistently score against Unicoi County, the Lady highlanders will be a most-difficult challenge for any team on their schedule.

The Unaka at Unicoi County game is very interesting, personnel-wise. Sophomore post players Rachel Lowe and Kayla Winters will be severely tested against Alisha Mainer and Jennifer Edwards. Lowe played very well last night. Her continued improvement is critical. Winters is a gamer; she'll really enjoy this battle. On the perimeter, the Lady Blue Devils three - Alicia Engle, Lynz Canady and Paige Barnett, are top-flight, another major challenge for the Lady Rangers and Lady Highlanders.

This is gonna be fun!

'Lander Update:

The Ladies looked very good last night in Cosby. The jv won by about 15 in the first game. Play was not too bad, although it did appear a little shaky at times. Good group of freshman, with some strong sophomore leadership to get them through the tough stretches.

The varsity looked every bit as good in Cosby as they did in Sullivan county. Brooke Johnson is electric, she lit them up for 15 in the first half. All the seniors looked very comfortable (as they should), good contributions from the junior class, with Elisha Pritchard leading the group. Sophomore wise, Sydnie Buchanan came off the bench and looked fantastic. Shellie McKinney played very well, as she always does. Jordi Miller took a very hard blow to the head in the jv game, but still came in and made it to the foul-line to contribute. Don't need to talk about BJ, lead the team in scoring and rebounding, I believe. Ten players scored for the 'Landers, that is very encouraging!

First win at Cosby for Coach Birchfield I hear. Congratulations to the whole team!

Good to see obrutone back on the board. Guess if he's starting to post it must be time again. I know he was probably just waiting until the Buckeyes were finished with Saturday's game. If they would have lost we might not have heard from him for another month. Anyway will agree with him this one and only time. Will make my picks after the HV tournament. Elizabethton seems to be the preseason favorite with UC running a close second. Will be interesting to see the Bulldogs with Coach Tolley at the helm. Read they were not going to play on Friday or Saturday. Is this correct and will they get someone to replace them? Looking forward to some interesting debates on the tri-county seven this season.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
