Is Jeremy Miller the first 8th grader to win State in D-I?

I rememeber reading an article about who could be the first 5 X state Champ in TN. I didn't think it was possible in D-I but now we have a kid that has a shot.

Congrats to his community and coach's.

I saw the majorty of the arena cheering for your young man tonight. That takes a special kid to get that reaction!

How long do yall think he can stay at 103 or will he be at 112 next yr.

That's a good question but I have heard there is a bigger question, like, will he even be at Greenback next year. I heard a very interesting rumor floating around on Friday.

I wondered the same thing as everyone else. This post, which appears to contradict The Daily Times story, was posted to day under the Tennessee Firsts thread:

I would first like to Congratulate Jeremy on winning the Div. I 103lb State Championship. Great Job! Jackie you've got to be PROUD!

The youngest State Champion before 8th grade Jeremy Miller was Jody Chamberlain in 1963 from The School of the Blind.

Competing in the state's third annual championship at Red Bank Junior High, the young Chamberlain at the age of 15 pinned Buddy Parker (East Ridge) in the quarters (2:38), posted a semifinal decision against Red Bank's Sam Moncier – who would win the state's lightest weight title a year later in 1964 – before disposing of his Everett High School opponent in 3:42 with a strong half nelson and chicken wing for that coveted first place medal.

Chamberlain would again claim the state title in 1965 at 112 weight class.

And his state tournament semifinal foe was current McCallie coach Gordon Connell, who would jump three weights the next year to win it all at 132 pounds in 1966. Chamberlain blanked Connell of Brainerd, 4-0, before handily disposing of Red Bank's Billy Land, 12-2, in the finals held at Brainerd High School.

I checked and Jody Chamberlain for TSB did win state at 98 lbs. in 1963. Since there have been several 9th graders who have won state titles before, I am assuming that Phillipians statement that the "youngest state champion before 8th grade Jeremy Miller" means that Chamberlain was an 8th grader. Does anyone know if Phillipians post is accurate? Or is the Daily Times story correct?

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
    • I heard Alabama was at Antioch practice and Colorado has offered QB. Hoping the Bears have a great year.
