It really just boils down to what the coach wants the letter to represent and I have seen it done in many ways. Some coaches want it to be just for Varsity playing time; others use it to motivate players for adding to the overall team but may never play a lot (Rudy). There are no hard fast rules, it should be used for what the coach needs to accomplish. The letter should be a source of pride not division. Look at the case of the proverbial back-up quarterback. He doesn't get on the field because the starter is better (older…what ever). He is more than athletic to cover kicks or punts, but the coach doesn't want to get him hurt, so in goes the sophomore. The sophomore gets a letter for covering kicks, but the better athlete does not letter. Just something to ponder. I am not for everyone getting due to participation, but I would expect the coach to have the ability to adjust to the situation on awarding them.

Maxi6, every time I read one of your posts, I say "Man, this guy makes sense" I really wish you would consider coaching again. You seem to be very knowledgeable and someone kids would respect and want to play for.

dont worry about it man just keep busting your butt on the field an in the weight room an it will come.
