JC4life
Everything doesn't have to be equal. If everyone gets a letter than what is the reward in it. It would be pointless. i think maybe if a kid plays all 4 years and did not earn a letter they should get one. Bingo, it is meaningless to award a letter if everyone gets one. The soccer mom mentality where everyone gets a trophy for trying just irks me. Since when was accomplishment alone not worthy of awards? If any other WB fans have any info feel free to enlighten me/us.... GO GOVS I wish I did know..I too would like to know the letter requirements at WB...I know many of the players, and many of my friends haven't gotten to play much, if at all, since WB has such a large roster and so much talent. Topgun
Jefferson County hasn't given out letters in years, no matter who you are. I believe any Joe blow can go buy one and sow it on. What a shame.
johnandjimmy
So tell me...what is a "letter" defined as? Do you not get to put a patch on the sleeve of your jacket with your number and position if you don't "letter"? That's like saying you weren't even on the team! 3-6-3
Very good point. These days where teams have 80 kids on the sidelines, playing time can be hard to come by. Many teams even at the 4 & 5A levels play some kids both ways. I think if a kid busts his butt in practace and does everything asked of him while on the team, he should recieve a letter once he is a soph. Is he any less deserving than a gifted or connected player? a letter is earned by playing time, not practice time - this attitude is exactly what's wrong - what is "connected" - either you play x quarters or not?? this ain't some dad's pick up travel team!! of course we live in a purple world, you know, Barney, everyone is special!! Everyone gets everything, don't mean nothin! don't mean nuthin!
Nitro14
Man, several excellent points on this topic! I agree that everyone doesn't deserve a letter just for being on the team. If little Johnny works hard enough he will and should get some PT. Every team has certain players who just wants to be on the team or ole Dad is making them play and they do enough to stay on the team. However you do see certain kids who work hard and help the team by being on the practice squad or in some other role. What if the coaches and captains or seniors decide if a player should get a letter if he hasn't accumulated the x amount of quarters but has contributed to the team in a big way? A Letter should be something to be proud of and shouldn't be given to anyone based on just being on the team. Your not helping certain kids by doing that, your setting them up for failure in the future!
lcfootball
HAaaa! In Lenoir City, if you were on the team last year, even no playing time, you earned a letter. This really upset off some of the older players that had to earn them the year before that!! It was a pitiful disgrace. I don't care that the team was short 5 starters and they had to pull so many other under classmen up. Not everyone deserved those letters!!!!! Just to add to this, the ALL THE FRESHMEN got letters last year! Some never dressed on the varsity squad. Now we have won 1 game in 2 seasons and when we question the coaching we get blasted for somehow not caring about the kids.
LSMFT
Everybody don't get a passing grade in the classroom UNLESS they earn it. If a player stays on the team for 3-4 years and has not played enough to merit a letter, then his senior year he should be awarded a letter. owlfanatic
It seems to me that these kids who may be primarily on the practice teams sshould still earn a letter for dedication and effort. We all know that only a certain amount of kids make it to the field on Friday nights, but ALL of them have to be at practice. Think about "RUDY", he's a great example of what I believe some of these kids go through. SOmetimes no matter how hard you try, you're just not good enough(works that way with teams too). If you've been on the team and have not gotten "required" playing time, you should still receive a letter when you become a Senior, IF you stick it out. DiverCity
It seems to me that these kids who may be primarily on the practice teams sshould still earn a letter for dedication and effort. Then it should be a different letter. Inequality of outcomes is not a bad thing, and should not be viewed as unfair in some inherent sense. For example, I'm much better looking than all the posters on here and somehow you deal with it. But seriously, egalitarianism is just marxist socialism that has morphed from the more easily recognizable form that exists in Cuba, for example, to the kind that demands equality of outcomes rather than equality of opportunity. Think about that for a moment. Which is more "fair?" It's more fair just to get the same opportunity to compete on a level playing field. It's necessarily unfair to demand that we all get the same outcome, regardless of athletic ability, intelligence, behavioral characteristics, motivation, etc. Again, we live in an inverted universe if it's now unfair to distinguish between success and the lack thereof.
