Maryville @ Alcoa

It was one of the better match-ups I have seen in years. The score does not show how close the game really was. Great Crowd, lots of support fro both teams like normal. Great Cheese burgers like normal. Kids on both teams played well.

Mr. Cobb was a man among men and if he had a few receivers who could hang on to the ball the score might have finished close. Cobb and two of Alcoa's RB kept Alcoa in the game till the end of the third qtr. Alcoa's D was pretty tough at times but Maryville did what they always do, wear the other team down. Somers did not show up for his team the way the stars for Maryville did. Shiver, Douglas and Burnet made plays all night. Some big plays.

I thought both coaches called a good game but ole' GQ is still the king of the crafty IMO.

Alcoa needs to find Cobb some receivers because Alcoa's run game is solid no question about that. Cobb lived up to his billing and if he has the grades will play at the next level.

Maryville has some things to work on if they want to make a deep run in the play-offs. First time in many years that the Rebels did not have that break out/away RB. They got speed but O-line did not seem to keep the holes to long. Alcoa was pretty fast as well and maybe that was part of the problem. On D the front 4 did a good job as did a very stingy secondary. Maryville seemed to lack at LB save for Douglas in the middle. He was a man among boys in there and did a great job. Still Maryville executed well, are in shape and should be as tough as ever in region 3-4A. Burnett showed the poise of a senior and has cannon for an arm and I think GQ wanted to work on the running game more because the passing attack is solid.

Good game for both teams.

Govman, I??™ll get back to you on your coach. In brief this was my observation. I thought he put his team in the position to lose the game that clearly he had in hand. When a team has the ball, with the lead, in the opponents end of the field with time running out you work for first downs to keep the clock moving. You don??™t throw for the end zone, you do all you can do to run out the clock and protect the ball as well. So what WB was only up be three, it was enough to put DB away. Throwing the ball around the lot maybe to be picked off would have given DB the change to score and win I just thought is was bad decision making on the part of your coach. That??™s my opinion.

By the way I did not go to the game to pull for DB you know!

Best play all night was the screen left where WB scored, it was a thing of Beauty. But after tonight I don't think WB could beat Alcoa this year.

Just got back to the Tri Cities and I must say I couldn't wait to get home to the computer to see what you thought. Well, gulp, I agree with everything you said. Maryville is way too deep this year, but Alcoa is suprisingly close in talent IMHO at least from the starters. I cannot agree more concerning the receivers for Alcoa. However, I don't think it will matter in 2A as they can "half a--" and still win. Cobb is the real deal as is the QB for Maryville. Shiver and Clindennan (sp?) play very fast. I really hope the Rebels win another as it makes Blount Co. look great, but hear me FBE, they need a running game fast to make a run. I saw Sullivan South last week and with the Phillips kid at QB, Wisc. Committment, they are close to Maryville this early in the season. Their offensive line is much better, size and talent. I'm sure Coach Q will get it worked out, but it has been a long time since I have seen the Rebels so average at RB/LB. That could hurt down the road, especially if the weather gets cold in November which can sometimes hamper pass game execution. Interesting game though and I appreciate your HONEST candor. Alcoa is young and has 50 Fresh and Sophs. which is exciting for the future. Same old story..............someday maybe!

and i almost forgot to talk about the game. like everyone has said, the score doesnt reflect the game. Marvyille scored on extreme plays, they rarely had a good drive. they were one-play-Mcgray tonight. but they did get the W and that is something that cant be taken from them. talent wise, maryville has a little advantage. not in the fact that they have more starts, but they have alot of very good players, and alcoa has a few great ones. also, Certain players didnt show up at the field tonight for the tornadoes, but i still gotta love my boys. I think for the most part they played their hearts out, and randall is real. thats all there is to it, he showed his stuff tonight. i mean taking hits from big guys, im talkin real big guys, and then he gets up fbefore they do. And on a QB draw play close to the end zone, i saw something that will prob never be seen again, (unless randall and A-Doug match up in SEC play) and that is a 5-10 180 Qourterback being face to face with a 6-7 245 tennessee comit. and instead of sliding, juking, or trying to run around, the quarterback lowers his shoulder and bulldozes his way for another yard or two. that is things that arent taught, you have to want that. Maryville will be fine till the playoffs( same old same old) and alcoa just has to much talent for 2A. the only way either of these teams will not get their 4th is them playing the worst games of their lives against a team playng the best of theirs. (Maryville might beat us in the season, but if we both win our 4th Ring, God-willing, alcoa can always say they did it first hahaha)

The Maryville passing game is lethal. Brent Burnett is a great quarterback. Aaron Douglas and the receivers dominated. Offensive line did a good job pass protecting. Running game needs to get better which I think it will. Thomas Shuler and Cody McCoy run very hard. They just don't have the size and strength that past backs like Ryan Tallent,Carl Stewart,Tank Baker and Chris McCord had. We Rebel fans have been spoiled with great tailbacks.

Defense had trouble with Alcoa's offense in the 1st half. A lot of that had to do with Alcoa. Randall Cobb is a warrior. Troy Hodge is a very good tailback. I just wish he went to Maryville like his dad did. Another kid for Alcoa I really like is Sam Thompson.

Maryville played great in the 2nd half. Defense came up huge on that 4th and goal stop.

Maryville won the special teams battle in a big way.

Chris Jordan had a great game last night.

Overall it was a huge win for Maryville. They played well last night but also have some things they can work on correcting.

Alcoa fans.

Good luck the rest of the season.

Good game.

Cobb and Hodge played very well. Alcoa schemed us up pretty well at times. The bubble pass to Hodge is very difficult to defend. They will win 2A again imo.

Maryville has some things to work on, no doubt. But it's sure easily to work on things after a 4 TD win over your arch rival.

Burnette has a cannon. His TD throw to Clendenen was big time. His passes have D-1 velocity.

Douglas made some unbelievable one-haned and two-handed snags. And yes he is the biggest MLB I have seen. The running game needs work, but seemed to get more in sync in the second half.

Chris Jordan=A young David Sweetland.

Good luck to Alcoa the rest of the season.

why are people still talking about alcoa playing other teams. Alcoa doesnt go around and say "oh yeah, well maryville doesnt play mcallie". and you hae got to be kidding me. WEST???? powell? powell hasnt been good since the graguation of Derek Milligan in 04. that was the last time they had a chance. and central only seems good because they seem to put up a good fight against maryville every so often, and then win a few games in the so called "tough" region that they are placed in along side maryville. that said, there is still no point toargue about other teams. this is about maryville vs. alcoa. no alcoa vs. powell, central, maryville, west, red bank, melrose, w.b., fil in the blank...... stick to the purpose of the message board

Trey,

Not all of the people that are on this thread are Maryville fans. Since you seem to be new to the boards we will let it slide this time. Some are fans of other schools. Some are people that have more than one screen name. Some people just like to stir things up.

Cheap shot FBE. It reflects negatively on you and on the program you represent. There's alot more I could say, but it's useless. To get on here and anonymously criticize other team's coaches is not the purpose of this board.

GovMan, It must be an honorary degree, or mailorder. I don't care for that kind of tone since it's just high school football, even if he pulls for MHS. He is entitled to his opinion though.

Impressions from the game:

-Alcoa did not have the big play threats to beat Maryville this year.

-Maryville has no running game at all, and they better find it real soon if they have any chance of making it 4 in a row.

-Randall Cobb, Troy Hodge, and Sam Thompson played their hearts out the whole game. If Alcoa is to win another state championship it will be because of these three kids. They are all mult-talented and kept fighting untill the end even though they were totally worn out from playing both ways the whole night.

-Where in the world was Brian Sommer? No catches I can recall, and Shiver, who he was guarding the whole night, had plenty.

-Aaron Douglas was impressive, but appeared slow, dont see him playing TE at UT.

-Shiver, Clendenen, and Clement looked very good, no reason why the Maryville QB shouldnt be a Mr. Football finalist when you have those WR's to throw to, and by the looks of the running game they will be throwing it a lot.

-Yes, there was a lot of people there, but the atmosphere was way down this year compared to the last two years, but the previous two years were very very very special teams for both Alcoa and Maryville, and the schools probably wont see teams like that again in a long time.

-George Quarles continues to impress, as does Coach Rankin. He isnt scared of Maryville at all and I love it how he runs trick plays and attempts fake punts in the first game of the year, instead of saving them for late in the year, because he has grasped how important this game is for Alcoa, and what it would mean to the school if we could pull out a win.

-All in all, great game to watch, two very sound, disciplined teams that I think will both be playing on Thanksgiving weekend, and hopefully beyond.

well then, maybe your new to reading, because what i said doesnt matter what fan base you are. I dont care if you are a pigeon forge fan, there is still no need to be on a message board about the alcoa maryville game, saying that alcoa cant beat another school that is 2 divisions above them. heck, it wouldnt even make sence to say that alcoa couldnt beat someone in their own region, on a message board devoted soley to the fact of talking about the maryville game. this board was for the maryville game, hence the "Maryville Alcoa game" Title. but hey, since you are new to this whole reading thing, we'll let it slide this one time
