Anybody have any news about the Alcoa-Powell scrimmage?

The scrimmage was an impressive show...Tyler Robinson, just coming off a sickness, had two nice TDs. Jaron Toney also caught my eye, proving tonight that he deserves the starting spot at RB. Freshman Vanderbilt "V" Hambrick was tearing it up on both the varsity field and the J.V. field, scoring TDs and pulling down interceptions...Can't wait to see the Tornadoes on Aug. 12 when Oak Ridge comes to Alcoa for hopefully a good scrimmage /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

The scrimmage started out with 1st team vs 1st team. Alcoa was on offense first and moved the ball across the field for it's first score. Field goal missed.

Powell came back with some very good pass plays and scored, went for two and did not get in. Score 6-6.

Alcoa back on offense again scored, field goal good, score 13-6.

Powell's next offensive series sputter a bit as Alcoa started going to a three man front to better cover the short pass plays that Powell had been having so much success early with. Powell turned the ball over to Alcoa after failing too score in the 10 play format.

Alcoa's next series was inconstant, but was able the get a long run down to the 1 yard line on their last play of the 10 play series. score remained 13-6.

Powell again was inconstant on it's next series and did not score.

Alcoa's scored again, score 20-6.

Powell last series.......no score.

At this point, both teams put their second teams in. without a lot of detail, Alcoa could move the ball well, winning the series 14-0.

Both 1st teams took the field for a 2nd time. Alcoa scored, 1st team on 1st team score 27-6.

Powell put together another great drive relying heavily on the pass and scored. Powell went for 2 and was successful. score 27-14.

Alcoa scored on the next series, another missed extra point, score 33-14.

Both teams then went to a goal line series starting at the 10 yard line. Alcoa won that series scoring twice. Powell was never able to score.

Notes:

IMO, Powell looks better than they have in the scrimmages against Alcoa the last couple of years. They have a great QB and some great WR's. If they could get a running game going to balance out their offense, they would tough on offense.

Powell exposed some weakness Alcoa will need to work on. First will be pass defense.

Freshman game was played on the practice field at the same time as the Varsity game. I was not able to watch this game. One Alcoa parent told me Alcoa won the scrimmage, one Powell fan/parent told me the game was "pretty even".

Both teams got a great work out. The scrimmage started at 5:30 and did not end til 9:00.

Next scrimmage will be at Alcoa August 12th against Oak Ridge. start time???

Great Report....any injuries to speak of? Sounds like Coach Rankin is really developing some depth.

I also thought powell actually looked better than they had in the past. I like the direction lowe is going with his team and the intensity and dicipline he is bringing to that team. his attitude towards players is no NO-nonsense and I think they are getting better. Alcoa I thought looked good but you saw what you would see in any scrimmage this early which were correctable mistakes, missed assigments, decision making and things like that. But with the effort they played with I think they are in for another good season. With continued improvement from James, alcoa is on pace for a great season.

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
