Revised Round 1 Matchups and Predictions:

 

McCallie and EHS went to OT earlier in the year. (at McCallie, at EHS this time) I'll give the edge to EHS for home field advantage, but watch for McCallie to rebound after a loss to MBA.

 

BA beat BGA 28-6 and BGA beat Briarcrest 35-21. BCS also lost to MUS 48-7. BA finished 6-4 including a 26-0 loss to nationally-ranked Prattville (AL). Their 3 losses to TN teams were by a combined 11 points. Edge to BA

 

CBHS and MBA have no common opponents. MBA's only loss was to undefeated Ensworth. CBHS lost 3 games by a combined 19 pts including a 21-14 home loss to MUS. CBHS had a bye this week and practiced without knowing if they were even going to be in the playoffs. They appear to have played only 2 of their 9 games on the road. (one home game was at the Liberty Bowl.) They will have to travel next week for what appears to be their first game out of Memphis. Edge to MBA but the Christian Bros is still an unknown quantity.

 

MUS and BGA both beat Briarcrest by 48-7 and 35-21 respectively. MUS was undefeated including a win over Olive Branch, MS. BGA did not look up to the task against either BA or Ensworth late in the season. MUS gets victory.

 

Pretty sound predicitions. I don't think I'd argue with any of them.

If there is an upset, I would go with McCallie. Even though BA has to go to Memphis, I don't see Briarcrest giving them a game.

This list is Scout's top 40 pre-season TN prospect list...all seniors. Darkwa's a junior, right, so he wouldn't be on there anyway. All of these players made the rounds at junior days, camps and combines during the spring and summer to get their names and faces out there. I don't know whether Jefferson did or didn't participate in any of these things, but if he didn't, well, there's your explanation.

Keep in mind that is a list of the top 40 college prospects in the playoffs, not the 40 best players...there's a huge difference. Tavarres gets unfairly left off of any of those lists due to his height. This is further limited to just senior prospects in the class of 2009.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes a lot more sense. The original post just said it was the top 40 DII players in the playoffs, which would have to include at least one of the 2. It didn't say anything about prospects or seniors. But now that I see what the list actually is, its obvious why Darkwa isn't on it, because he is only a Junior (if he doesn't make it on the list next year though, I will have something to say about it). I still think Jefferson has the potential to be a really good DB in college, but that doesn't necessarily mean he would make it on this list.

The website said "Top 40 Players" period. I highlighted the ones that were playing in the playoffs only so that the folks interested could discover who they might want to focus on if they go to a game Friday night.

 

It was not meant to be a slight to anyone who was not on the list.

 

If Tavarres plays QB in college, he will have to completely re-work his throwing mechanics. He is a great high school player and a real playmaker, but he will have to find another position to play at the next level.
