Old Pirate has commented on coacht regarding this subject before. However it seems to be a real problem today in athletics. OP works with folks from Rhea and some witnessed a disturbing turn of events last night in SP. SP having just completed their undefeated season and taking the championship from Rhea who had come into the game undefeated and unscored on. Folks parked in the parking lot were stunned by individuals ranting and raving because their little Johnny didn't get this or that. OP says............................... for those folks, GET A LIFE OF YOUR OWN.

SP & OTHER PROGRAMS ARE BETTER WITHOUT YOU PERIOD.

It is a down right disgrace that daddies & mommies and who ever display such a negative on our sporting events. It starts at the earliest of ages and continues thru out the players carreers. Coaches continuely get trashed over "goober parents & individuals" who simply have NO class. Period.

OP welcomes your thoughts and comments and is sure some of these Goobers will be more than happy to express their goober views.

It is a shame how some parents act...

I feel very fortunate, with the coaching staff my son has. I trust thier judgement and coaching abilities 100%.

I would like to publicly thank Coach Taylor and the entire staff at Bearden High.. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

Naw, not for either of us. The topic is about parental behavior. But I did consider that when I posted.

OP, of all people, I do agree with you on this. BTW, I haven't heard anything about what you're describing last night. Congrats to SP on the win. One last thing, I am not a goober for responding.

Im a young coach assistant coach of a middle school in east tn. We had a game last week and we scored right at the very end of the game. There was just enough time on the clock to have to kick off. We kicked off and the return was to about mid field. About 15 yards behind the play i see one of my players laying on his back and trying to move away from the other teams kid kicking him in the side. My player gets up, tackles this kid and mounts him ufc style and starts hitting him, by this time im running full speed to stop the fight, i grab my player and wrestle him to the ground. I look over to the home teams sideline and a few parents were jumping the fence onto the field. Both sides coaches calmed their players down and the refs helped us out with that. We were escorted to our locker room and to the bus while the home team was HELD on their side til we left. The point of my story is that parents act absolutely stupid and blow things out of proportion, the kids act more mature about things than the parents do. We were told we had to leave soon because the parents on that teams side were upset about the fight. How stupid can they be, its middle school and it got taken care of quick before anyone got hurt. To me that was very poor judgment on the parents side.

Agree. Parents can ruin everything. Sometimes the coaches can show favortism towards upperclassmen, there is no doubt about that. But more times than not, he or she is going to play the best player at that particular postion. The thing is, too much politics gets involved(as happened in Monroe County this summer) and Coaches go through a revoling door. My niece, who graduated from SQHS, was in a situation like this five years ago. It goes on at a lot of places, and it always will.

I'm confused which parents were griping. It doesn't matter really, some parents are always going to run their mouths.

Old Pirate says to change the world.......it can occur 1 small act after another. OP knows that most are classy folks, but gee-whizz there is a world of jealousy floating around. OP has heard some disturbing facts about what happened but chooses not to post until more info is found to be factual.

Much about football has changed since many of us played. Not only the style of game, but the way its coached, the abilities of the players, etc...including the level of parental involvement. It was rare to see a parent at practice when I played, now you could almost charge admission. 2nd quessing the coach was still common, but it was rare that a parent confronted the coach publicly. Now, not only is that common, but we have message boards like this one that allow people to publicly complain without hesitation. Back in the day, we had tryouts and had real live honest cuts. Not everyone made the team, much less get to play. Now the coaches are put under great pressure to allow everyone who tries out to make the team as well as find some way to play them all. That starts in rec league and has worked its way all the way up to the high school level. And countless parents have developed a mindset of " I don't care about the TEAM, I only care about my kid". That attitude creates inevitable conflicts when playing a TEAM oriented sport such as football, which really is the ultimate team sport in my opinion.

I also know some parents have an attitude of "entitlement" due to the countless hours and money invested in todays youth sports. From driving to all the practices, all the games, the money spent on athletic training, camps, etc... Most of that didn't take place in my day. Heck, many of the parents didn't even make the away games and sat home and listened on the radio. And D1 sports training, are you kidding. We had cinder blocks on a couple of tobacco sticks to work out with. But Bob Dylan had it right.."times are changing", acutally they already have changed.

Parental involvement is more important than ever, but the climate needs to get back towards more TEAM and less ME.
