For everyone who asked:

Tops In 1A

1. Clarkrange (30-0) ??“ The Lady Buffaloes are so far ahead of everyone else that they are like the Connecticut of Class A Girls Basketball. However, they do have a road that will constantly feature a very familiar roadblock in the Lady Blue Devils of Jackson County. Junior post Molly Heady leads a very talented and senior-laden team that has an extremely good shot of becoming just the 24th team to ever go undefeated through an entire season, and the first to do so since Bradford (34-0) did it back in 2000. Clarkrange??™s road to their 8th Gold Ball starts on Thursday when they will face the winner of the game between Pickett County and Red Boiling Springs in the semi-finals of the District 7A Tournament.

2. Jackson County (22-6) ??“ The Lady Blue Devils lost a whole surplus of strong guards from last season??™s Class A State Championship team. Returning, however, is junior post Laken Leonard, who is without a doubt one of the best players in all of Class A. Surrounding her is a strong nucleus of smart, fundamentally solid guards that are all capable of putting up big numbers when they are called on to do so. The bottom line is that despite all that they lost, they are still Jackson County and until they are put out, no one should overlook and underestimate Coach Brown??™s girls. Jackson County will kick off their attempt at a Gold Ball repeat this Thursday in the District 7A Tournament when they will face the winner of the game between Clay County and Monterey.

3. Forrest (23-3) ??“ The Lady Rockets from Chapel Hill appear to be poised for yet another (their 4th in a row to be exact) run to Murfreesboro. In fact, they may stand a better chance of coming away with Gold or Silver Ball this year then in the past two years. Why? Their post play is without a doubt the deepest of any team??™s in Class A, with maybe the exception of Clarkrange, with a trio of inside scorers in Hawn, Waggoner, and Porter. Consistency at the guard spots is what is needed for Forrest to go far and possibly play for some more hardware. Forrest, the #1 seed from District 9A, kicks off tournament play Monday against Van Buren County.

4. Bradford (21-6) ??“ The Lady Red Devils are starting to come on strong at the right time of the year. Since Christmas, Bradford has won 12 out of 13 games, with their only loss coming to an undefeated Gibson County team in AA. Bradford??™s solid inside-outside game has been the reason for success all year long. They have size and toughness inside to compliment quickness and intelligence at the guard spots. They also boast one of the best floor leaders in Molly Wallsmith, who knows her team inside and out. Despite all that talent, getting back to Murfreesboro for the second year in a row will be no easy task as they must battle all of the strong teams from the always tough District 14A numerous times before they can make it to Sub-State, where more than likely Middleton, Madison Academic Magnet, or Manassas will be waiting. Bradford??™s run back to Murphy Center starts tonight as they take on the #8 seed in their district, the Dresden Lady Lions.

5. Wayne County (24-4) ??“ The Lady Cats have certainly been one of the biggest surprises this year out of the always tough District 12A. After graduating four starters from last year??™s Final Four team, few people expected Wayne County to win 20+ games and run the table in 12A. Their success can be attributed to two factors: 1.) they have Coach Byrd as a coach, and 2.) they have significant size at nearly every position on the floor. The inside play of 5-10 senior Jessica Hammonds and 6-2 sophomore Carly Daniel has carried the Lady Cats all year long. But when opposing teams focus on defending the post, the Lady Cats have three outside shooters that can tear apart any zone. Thus, this is not a very showy or overly impressive team. However, they get the job done, and they are very much in position to be headed back to Murfreesboro. The Lady Cats will begin that march back to the Murphy Center on Monday as they open District 12A Tournament play against county rival Frank Hughes.

6. Middleton (20-4) ??“ The Lady Tigers, a State Tournament team from a year ago, are probably one of the most overlooked teams in all of Class A. This team has found a way to win games; even games they were not exactly suppose to win. The backbone of this team and the source of its ???refuse to lose??? attitude comes from senior post Jazzaine McKinney. Her leadership, as well as the play of guard Sharon Morgan have this team right back on top in District 16A and in position to make a run for another State Tournament run. Middleton will kick off District 16A Tournament play on Thursday when they will face the winner of the game between City University and Middle College.

7. Oliver Springs (18-8) ??“ The Lady Cats have a record that to the unknowledgeable eye is unworthy of a Top 10 ranking. However, one look at their schedule will reveal that Oliver Springs has played the toughest teams in their area, and though they have not come out on the winning side of a lot of those games, they are more prepared to come out on the winning side of the upcoming games that matter the most. Leading this senior-laden team is the stellar Kayla Christopher, who, in my opinion, will be the Class A Miss Basketball. Christopher will look to lead her Lady Cats back to the State Tournament for the 4th straight year, and it will all begin on Friday when they will take on the winner of the game between Oakdale and Wartburg in the Semi-Finals of the District 4A Tournament.

8. Middle Tennessee Christian (23-6) ??“ The Lady Cougars from Murfreesboro have been hot in 2009 as they have won 11 out of their last 12 games. MTCS is led by a pair of Katie??™s in Katie Mullins and Katie Dunn. Their superior play along with a solid supporting cast and very sound coaching has this team poised for yet another appearance at Sub-State. The question is: Is this the year that these small private school girls finally get over that hump and play for a Class A State Championship right there in their own backyard? The answer to that question will come sooner rather than later as the Lady Cougars have already begun District 9A Tournament play and will be playing in the Semi-Final game tonight against the #6 seed from 9A, the Community Viqueens.

9. Cornersville (21-5) ??“ The Lady Bulldogs are currently enjoying one of their most successful seasons in recent history thanks in large part to the outstanding play of junior guard Sara Nelms. However, she has not been the only scorer this season as numerous other names have stepped up to lead this very balanced squad, including Fagan, Hopkins, and King. Cornersville outstanding play leaves them as the #1 seed in the District 11A Tournament, which automatically puts them in the Region 6A Tournament (which they will host by the way). Cornersville will begin tournament play on Thursday where they will face the winner of the game between Richland and Huntland.

10. Chattanooga Arts & Sciences (22-2) ??“ The Lady Patriots are currently riding a 15-game winning streak in which no one has come within 18 points of defeating them. Now, while that is certainly impressive, it also speaks volumes about the type of schedule that the Lady Patriots have played. While this is certainly not entirely their fault as they cannot help the district they are in or the fact that many of their games are scheduled based on who the boys??™ team wants to schedule, the fact remains that their schedule is very weak. This will not help them once they reach Sub-State, which I entirely expect them to do, and have to play someone from Region 4A. Anyways, the Lady Patriots kick off District 6A Tournament play later this week.

11. Coalfield (17-5) ??“ The Lady Jackets have played extremely well this season with losses only coming to Oliver Springs, Clarkrange, and Knoxville Webb. What makes things even better is that this is a very young team, and though this year is certainly not over by any means, they definitely have a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years. Star guard Alania Jordan will look to lead the way for the Coalfield girls as they kick off District 4A Tournament play on Friday against the winner of the opening round game between Oneida and Sunbright.

12. Lake County (21-6) ??“ The Lady Falcons have used an insurgence of young talent to help put them back near the top of District 14A. Freshman guard T.T. Flowers has been stellar in helping to lead her team to a 13-2 record since the New Year began. With Flowers, Lake County is capable of playing with and beating just about anyone on any given night. They will need her and all of their other young talent this week as they begin play in the District 14A Tournament. Their opening round game tonight will put them against Greenfield, a team that is certainly capable of knocking off the Lady Falcons if they are not on top of their game.

13. Gordonsville (21-5) ??“ After finishing 2nd last year, the Lady Tigers are looking to regain the title as the queens of District 8A. Gordonsville, who has traditionally been very dominant in this district, has returned to form this season behind stellar guard play and sound defense. Gordonsville??™s #1 seed allows them the luxury of a bye in the first round of the District 8A Tournament, thus guaranteeing them a spot in the Region 4A Tournament. The Lady Tigers will kick off district play on Friday when they take on the winner of the game between Watertown and Trousdale County.

14. McEwen (21-3) ??“ The Warriorettes are currently enjoying one of their most successful seasons in a long time thanks to an experienced group of players and a very easy schedule. McEwen??™s success can be attributed to the stellar play of Hobson sisters Andrea and Allison who account for a lot of McEwen offensive production as a potent inside-outside tandem. This sister combination is McEwen??™s best shot at making it out of Region 5A, and possibly playing in a Sub-State game. McEwen finished undefeated in District 10A and thus will be the #1 seed in the District 10A Tournament, which has already began. Coach Mize??™s girls will kick off tournament play on Friday when they face the winner of the game between Houston County and Nashville Christian.

15. Clay County (18-9) ??“ The Lady Bulldogs have been very up-and-down at times throughout this season. They have beaten high quality teams like Jackson County and Gordonsville, but have struggled with other teams that they should have either beaten or beaten easily. Clay County has a nice mixture of both upper-and underclassman talent that has given Coach Kimes a good balance on both ends of the floor. Unfortunately for Clay County, they play in one of the toughest districts and regions in the state, and they will have to knock of some top tier teams in order to have a shot a Murfreesboro. Clay County will begin District 7A Tournament play tonight when they take on Monterey in opening round action.

16. Cloudland (19-6) ??“ The Lady Highlanders currently find themselves in a three-way tie with North Greene and Hampton for 1st out of what has been a very competitive District 1A this year. Cloudland, who has had to deal with their fair share of illnesses and injuries, has persevered through a lot and once again finds themselves in position to make another long tournament run. Consistent play will be absolutely necessary as the Lady Landers will open District 1A play this week.

17. Humboldt (17-9) ??“ The Lady Vikings started off extremely strong in the ultra competitive District 14A, but struggled down the stretch to lose their top seed in the District 14A Tournament. Humboldt??™s quickness and athleticism has given opposing teams fits all year long, and it is those two attributes that separate them from most of the team that they play. They will begin District 14A Tournament play tonight when they take on the #7 seed from 14A, the Peabody Lady Golden Tide, who has defeated Humboldt once already this year.

18. Madison Academic Magnet (20-7) ??“ The Lady Mustangs??™ season has not went entirely according to plan thus far, though Coach Patterson will be the first to tell you that it is not how your start, but how your finish. Despite some rocky games, Madison Academic is now in position to make a long tournament run where anything less than an appearance at the State Tournament would be a disappointment. For senior do-it-all guard/forward/center Morgan Faulkner (a potential Miss Basketball candidate), this is her last opportunity to get back to the Murphy Center. Faulkner??™s last tournament run begins on Thursday in the District 15A Tournament when the Lady Mustangs will face the winner of the game between Scotts Hill and Decatur County Riverside.

19. Gleason (18-7) ??“ The Lady Bulldogs find themselves in unfamiliar territory as the #4 seed in District 14A. The athleticism of opposing teams in their district has helped to counteract the fundamental play of Gleason. However, no team is tougher in tournament play then Gleason, and the Lady Bulldogs are never a team that you want to see on your side of the bracket. Juniors Taylor Stout and Jenna Frazier will look to lead the Lady Bulldogs past their first round opponent, Union City (they split with them in the regular season), in the first round of the District 14A Tournament.

20. Perry County (17-7) ??“ The Lady Vikings have been a surprise team out of District 12A after losing four starters from last season. Leading the way for the girls from Linden have been a pair of stellar guards in sophomore Alecia Simmons and junior Brook Warren. The Lady Vikings, who have faltered as of late in losing three straight tough games, will kick off District 12A Tournament play on Tuesday when they take on the Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers in opening round play.

Best of the Rest: North Greene (21), Trinity Christian Academy (22), Moore County (23), Friendship Christian (24), Collinwood (25)

Nice job!!!! I don't think Madison will be able to beat any of the top teams from 14A though. Morgan Faulkner is definately one of the top 1A players in the state, but I don't know if Madison will match up well against a Bradford, Lake Co., or Humboldt and I've seen all 4 teams play. I'd really love to see Morgan Faulkner and Madison in Murfreesboro though!
