Spring practice started on Thursday and ive heard that this Wartburg team is getting fired up and have more than plenty starters returning on both sides of the ball...they will be scrimmaging Sequoya at Wartburg sometime soon not sure when though. Should be exciting to watch their progress from working out and training.

I've felt like this program was making progress over the last couple years. With the new alignments, what are the prospects for Wartburg in 2009? Do they have some players returning? What is the interest in the football program in the school?

Wartburg should win 5 or 6 games this season.....but miss the playoffs unless they can somehow beat OS

Talked with Coach Shoemaker at the AAU tournament this last weekend. He said the 1st 2 days of practice have gone well. He also said that they will scrimmage Sequoya May 14th at home. I am looking forward to see if they have made any improvements from last year. Coach Frazier is gone. Went to the Middle School. Watched a little of practice Friday, not a lot of numbers. May lack the excitement for the game, or maybe not working the halls enough. Hard to tell this early into the process.

Yeah, why are the numbers so low? Were some of the players playing baseball when spring practice began?

You need to get Coach Layne to take the team, if he does half the job with the football team as he does basketball it would be a big improvement. He gets more out of his players than anyone around. Plus, he is from Rockwood and everybody knows Rockwood puts out great coaches, regardless of sport.

SCW the Wartburg Baseball team is still playing so im sure they have a few there but not sure how many. I think they also had a few miss spring practice due to injuries, not sure who or how many.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
