Coaches and Cussing!

One of America??™s greatest thinkers and authors Samuel Clemens once said that ???profanity is the weapon of the witless???. If someone has enough intellect to communicate without cursing they generally choose to do so because it still is perceived as language of the layperson, one does not often witness the intellectual elite of our world perorate with aid of profanity and it is because they do not require its use. I have never used profanity and have never required its use because I can communicate without such frivolities. Now with that being said I have never been offended by the use of profane language and accept it as part of our language. I have had coaches that cursed every other sentence because it was simply part of their vernacular and I have had coaches that would not ever use such language. I did not have lack of respect for either as a coach because of their vocabulary, that was entirely based on their ability to teach football, call plays, and develop football players but their was definitely a discrepancy in who I respected more as a man because it is hard for me hold someone in high regard who can not effectively think. The bottom line is that it is a matter of preference but diction has no effect on someone??™s qualification to coach football.

Those past two seasons who would that coach be by chance???? I think I have a good idea who your talking about!!! And as far as Gruden goes he was successful every where he had been before he got to tampa and it has been documented by many players on that team they said the new attitude with Gruden there was one of the main reason they were able to get over the hump. Dungy is a great coach I was just given an example of two extremes that were both successful. And as for your new coach just because he uses big words that some of you can't understand doesn't mean thats going to gurarntee more wins in the future. But your right some coach somewhere will use profanity and whether you think its right or wrong its apart of it, like I said in an earlier post it is apart of all sports Girls and Boys, kids and coaches a like.

Is it 'apart of it' or ' a part of it'?? Gruden is a joke! He had one good season in Tampa and he won a Super Bowl with Dungy's players. I'm not saying that cussing makes you a good or bad coach. I don't think it has anything to do with football knowledge. I do think it is a big character issue though. I have played for coaches that cussed and some that didn't. If a coach is frustrated and a cuss word slips out I can tolerate it. But someone like Gruden that just cusses because he's an idiot I can not tolerate. Anyway, at the high school level I think a coach has to be very careful how he acts around his players. These aren't men, they are boys and they are very easily influenced. In my opinion, a coach that cusses all the time is very undisiplined and they seem to be suprised when all of their players start to be undisiplined. Keep the cussing to a minimum and respect the players and he might get some respect back.

This is why it is hard to keep good coaches. Parents are worrying about cussing. You should be worrying about you kids being terribly coached. Down here in the Bible belt you can be a terrible coach as you as you are a good Christian man. Or you can cuss if you are a great coach. But don't cuss and just be mediocre or you are fired. It's crazy. You know people in some places they even sell beer on sundays. Who would have ever thought such a thing would be tolerated?

If you don't like it go back to the slums where you came from.

Fortunately some coaches see that "good Coaching" is about a whole lot more than just winning....it is in many ways the same thing the teacher in the class room is trying to do: make responsible, disciplined adults out of undisciplined children.

If a coach cannot even control the words or language that comes out of his/her own mouth then how can they hold a 16 year old responsible for the offsides penalty, the missed free throw or the error on a potential double play? Do you honestly think a player respects a coach who can't control their own tongue? Yes they may fear them for the tongue lashing, but in the end what lesson do they learn from that?

If a coach's entire career is graded on "how well he WON" as opposed to "how he or she won WELL" then we have missed the whole point of youth and school sports.

I would rather finish up my career as a coach (and as a man) as one who was respected for how I handled myself on and off the court/field, and how I treated my players as if they were my own children.

Laugh at that, or make fun of my Bible belt standards or whatever you wish.

I commend you and thank you for your efforts and I wish all coaches thought as you did. That part of the coaching has fallen to the wayside, it's all about the win now. As a parent of a football player I do get offended if I know a coach has cussed at my son. I do not allow that kind of language in my home and just because they hear it when they are away from my house doesn't make it okay. I try to teach my children to respect others and when you cuss at someone you are showing disrespect for yourself and the person whom you are talking to.

Coaches are role models and I can guarantee the coaches that do not cuss at the boys have alot more respect from them than those that do. There are other ways to make the point without using cuss words. There are plenty of coaches who who are very successful without the use of such language.

I'm just curious fortheboys. What TV shows do you let your child watch, since you don't allow profanity in your house?

Try Andy Griffith for one. Just because society thinks it's okay doesn't mean I have too!

Well that's an hour. Come on admit it, every night he watches TV and all you hear is sex this and sex that, shoot I can't even watch TV with my little girl because of the Viagra ads. I agree with you about society, however, I don' t think that a coach saying s**t compares to the garbage your son watches on tv. I don't think a coach should cuss a kid, however, in coaching he might say a cuss word that is not directed at a player. An example would be "get on his a** and stay on his a** until the whistle blows. Would you not agree?

I grew up in the late 60's and all my coaches cursed. They were all Korean and WWII VETS who pushed us hard and turned us into men.

Now, I'm retired but used to teach and coach. I seldom cursed but when I did the boys knew I did it to make a point. My daddy was an elder in our church and he too coached. He was wise enough to understand that words are not good or evil: it's all about how, when and how those words are used.

The academic classroom is not the appropriate place but under certain curcumstances I see nothing wrong with saying, "Get your lazy butts in gear and go kick some toe"

The trick is not cursing at a single boy! Words can be used to hurt, encourage, or to motivate. If you have a good relationship with your players, you can use certain words to get their attention and it works well.

If the goal of high school is the win/loss record, then "what ever works." But, if your goal is to train up young men and women that will make your town and school proud on the field or floor and off, and in the years to come, then you have to set a level of expectations of your players to behave in a manner that is exceptable within your community. And it is more important that the example set by the leaders (coaches) set the highest standard of what is expected. There are no schools and few jobs where the use of profanity will be allowed. In fact, the use of profanity in school will lead to disciplinary actions, and the use of profanity on the job is creating a hostile work enviroment and will lead to being fired. And for those that are in favor of the use of profanity, what do you do when the young man receiving the cussing returns the same language to the coach? Is it ok for the players to cuss to or at the coach? If not, then why allow the players to receive it? And as far as being "turned into men" by this. I guess that my definition of being a man is somewhat different then yours. When I think of the best men that I have known, not a single one was incapable of expressing the depth of their emotions without the use of profanity.

    • Yeah. AC brass walked in to the building at Clinton and suggested that the principal start changing grades.  Honesty, the notion that anybody at AC was involved is just idiocy.  The ones who are hurt most are the kids who weren't involved in the cheating, but still are being penalized by college admission decisions and scholarship consideration simply because they went to a school that was involved in such a scandal.
    • I heard it was ugly.  Coach Harig and the Redskins demolished what is left of the Dragon Wagon.  At this point, it is not certain that Clinton will even be able to field a football team for 2024.  No way the coach keeps his job, transfers gone, nothing left.  Back to the stone ages for the Dragoons.
    • Not even close, changing over 1000 grades?  Head coach changing grades to keep players on the field?  Not the same.  They will give Lieutenant Flip Flops the "Opportunity to resign"  right after graduation if not before.     Negative, the juvenile court judge blew the whistle.  Clinton admin, teachers and coaches started this fire.  Been going on for 4 years now according to Jones, one of the teachers that was fired.  This is truly pathetic.   The Dragon Wagon is #### up in the ditch down on highway 61 down there near The Spur.  Reap what you sew.
    • What ever happened to the #93 rb that came in and did well last year when yalls RBs we’re going down?
    • Going to be a rough season for coach Egghead and the hawks. Everyone picking the under
