Polk County is a top 10 team. Not #3, but probably top 10. McMinn Central is not, at this point, close to being top 10. Hadn't seen Austin-East, but why are they still up there? I believe Milan should be #2 but we will have to see what they do with Dyersburg and Crocket County (#2 4a). No doubt Alcoa is #1. No opinion on the rest.

I'm not an Austin East fan, but I'll answer your question IMO. Austin East has 3 losses, which at first glance makes them look unworthy of a 3A top 10. But, they lost to 6A Ooltewah (currently AP#1) and 5A Knox Catholic (currently AP#9) by 1 and 2 points respectively. That's two losses to highly ranked teams by a total of 3 points. Their other loss was to 5-1 Brainerd (currently AP#8 in 4A.) by 11 points.

 

So, all of their losses were to higher classification teams and only one was by a substantial margin. They are definitely worthy to be 3A top 10 IMO.

Once again, Memphis Manassas gets no respect. Why? Here is why they should:

1.17 returned lettermen from a 9-2 team last year.

2. After a 1st game stumble, have won 5 straight.

3. Beat a good Trinity Christian team at Trinity by 19 points.

4. Beat Trezvant, who beat 6A Houston in week 1.

5. The line is anchored by argueably the best offensive lineman in any class in the state, OC Brown, who currently hold 12 D-1 offers inculding Kentucky, Colorado, and Southern Miss.

6. As a 3A team is odds on favorite to win thier district.

7. Has an evolving star in sophomore tailback Omar Williams. The 5-11, 208 pound back has rushed for 591 yards and 6 Td's on 38 carries in the last 2 ballgame - a gaudy 15 yard per carry average.

 

We continue to understand in Memphis that the rest of the state doesn't think much of our teams, but this is one who over the past 3 seasons (2007 - 7-4, 2008 - 9-2, 2009 5-1) deserves at least a look. Contrary to Eastern belief, Camden and Milan aren't the only teams West of Nashville in 3A that can play football.

Reasons why Manassas is not in the top 10...

 

• Manassas' five wins are against:

Trinity Christian (won 50% of their games)

Bolivar Central (won 0% of their games)

Trezvant (won 55% of their games)

Hillcrest (won 40% of their games)

St. Benedict (won 40% of their games)

• St. George's has won 70% of their games, but Manassas lost to them.

• Manasses, formerly a 1A team, is now playing in 3A

• None of Manasses' opponents are ranked in the AP in any football division

 

You say that the rest of the state doesn't think much about Memphis teams, but the AP poll represents writers from every part of the state... even Memphis.

However, the trinity win is a good win, the Trezvant win is a win against a good 4A team, and being 1A last year doesn't mean much since 4 wins were against 3A opponents. Also, don't get me wrong, Manassas shouldn't get any 1st place votes and clearly teams like Camden, Milan, and Alcoa deserve the top spots, but Austin East is 3-3, Goodpasture hasn't beaten anybody of significance and Mc Minn Central has a 30+ point loss. So, we are just looking for a little respect and really think we deserve some votes considering that the bottom of the list doesn't have anything that Manassas doesn't have.

Through six games, Austin-East has played one of the toughest schedules in the state in any division. Their opponent have been:

 

Morristown East - won by 5

Ooltewah (AP#1 in 6A) - lost by 1

Fulton (AP#5 in 4A) - won by 6

Catholic (AP#9 in 5A) - lost by 2

Carter - won by 23

Brainard (AP#9 in 4A) - lost by 11

 

If Manassas played that schedule, they would be 2-4 at best, probably 1-5, and quite possibly 0-6.

 

You say that Goodpasture hasn't beaten anybody of significance... Manassas hasn't either.
