Am I missing something? Is this a fantasy post? This is not how Pod 4 is slated currently...Camden played Lewis Co. and beat them 35-7 last Friday night....not Fairview.

I am trying to come up with a system to seed teams fairly, with wins and losses and strength of schedule all coming into play.

Formula is simple

IF you WIN you get 100 + opponents' wins + (+ 20 for each class higher than you or - 20 for each class lower than you)

WIN OR LOSE you get 5 times the number of wins of your opponents

then WIN OR LOSE, if your opponent is your class or higher you get 2 times the number of wins of your opponent.

So the better teams you play and the higher class you play the better off you are....

I played my HS football in Ohio, when we moved to East Tennessee I was surprised by the number of teams that made the playoffs. The system mentioned above is similar to what we worked through in the mid 80's. One season our Region champion was 10 and 0 and our second place team was 8 and 2...NEITHER team made the playoffs. It was ALL about numbers!!!! I'm not sure it was best way to put together playoff brackets, but we didn't have sub .500 teams making the post season.

Under our current system a 6A team could schedule 1a out of district games to pad their overall record and there is no deterrent to doing so. Trying to change that...

I really like this approach, especially as it discourages playing cup cake schedules so you can make the playoffs.

What I appreciate is the fact that with this scheme East Lit made the playoffs playing in a tough district with a 5-5 record. I have to admit I was not too impressed when I saw that they did not make it and Lewis County did with a 3-7 record.

I would have to agree. CPA and East Lit. were playoff caliber teams...for sure.

This could make 1a and 2a have a hard time of finding non-district games. Also: teams that have a smaller school as a rival that they may have played for 70 years have a disavantage like Smith co. and Gordonsville. With Gordonsville being a 1a team and Smith Co. a 3a. They are the only teams in the county and back in the 70's the school bd. made them play. Back then there where small and large classes. If you played in a smaller class you got no points. So Smith Co. didn't want to play Gordonsville but still the bd. made them. Even though it hurt Smith Co. change to get into the playoffs.

In one sense the scheme allows you to play a lower classification if they have a good program. For instance if a 3A wanted to play South Pittsburg, a win gets you 100-40=60 but also gets you 5 times the wins that South Pitt has (5 times 9=45). Therefore you still get 105 points.

This is still good since you can play down provided you don't go seeking easy wins.

Maybe there could be one exception per season to allow for existing rivalries where you keep the 100 points if you win regardless of their classification..

Grundy County played five teams that are a lower class then they are.

Oakhaven played three teams lower than they are. Two of their wins was against a 1A (1-6) team and a (0-10) 3A team. They only played two teams with winning records, losing both of those games.

Jackson Central-Merry played 9 of their 10 games against teams of a higher class than they are. Played five teams with winning records.

Happy Valley played six teams that were .500 or better.

Which two of the four teams above are more deserving to compete in the 3A post-season? My goal is to make sure you are worthy of being one of the top 32.
