Best SP game ever

OLD PIRATE

All I know is that the Pirates use to scrimmage Polk twice a year all through the 80's so we are pretty familiar with them. Of course we scrimmaged them so much because the most famous Polk county football player of all time was the SP line coach. That being Dave Baxter.

The Pirates actually had a couple of home and away series with Polk County back in the 80s and they split with the in both series with the home team winning. That's why I was concerned with the way last years team did get properly prepared to play a team that has a history of laying wood to the Pirates. At least one of the Griders or both may have actually played in some of those games.

I know that one of the all time classics was played at Stevenson in 1980 that went 3 OT. The Sweetwater game was good that year as well as the Gordonsville game during a Halloween night homecoming. The final game of the season at Copper Basin was good because it had the District riding on it. The Pirates were decimated with injuries and was starting a green freshman tailback that night. The problem is that in the 60s, 70s and 80s, the games were often good because most folks in the valley had good teams and a few of them great teams. It was hard to hang 35 points on someone much less 60 or 70.

David Baxter was a famous, former great Marion County coach. David Baxter Stadium in Jasper is named after him. The young lads at South Pittsburg have been involved in many great games over the years.

Are you sure it is not Bill Baxter stadium. Named after his brother and former principal of Jasper High School

Just some games that come to mind but their is so many. 1994 when the Pirates went to Trousdale and the Banks boys actually made the running backs quit because of the punishment they were dishing out. 1986 when the Pirates played Celine for the first time and they had Jimmy Hull who at the time had more all purpose yards and leading scorer in the state. Three offensive plays and the Pirates were leading 14 to 0. Jimmy Hull ended up with about 20 yards that day. 1985 The Pirates threw a bomb on 4th and about 30 late in the game to beat Stevenson who had beat the Pirates 5 or 6 years in a row. The Pirates had to be escorted out of the stadium because of the rabid stevenson fans. These are just a few from a Proud and dominate tradition know as South Pittsburg Pirate football.

Stevenson refused to go to South Pittsburg for the last game in 1986. After that Bridgeport & Stevenson merged to become North Jackson. That's o.k. They went out losers. :roflol: I was at that Celina game. That was following another great game at Oneida. Oneida had the best defense in the state in all 3 classifications that year and Johnny Sisco had ~334 yards on them which was nearly half of what they had given up in the previous 12 games! Oneida had a banner across the street taunting him on the way in and he proceeded to open up a 132 pound can of industrial size Whoop-Azz on them.

Uncle Dave remembers both of those games in 1985. Them crazy folks from Celina were chanting "Go back to Pennsylvania".....we were all like, What??? Don't they know SP is in TN??? And the Oneida game was something to see. Them boys was tough but they could not stop the Sisco Kid!!!!

RLH, are you sure that NJ started after 1986?? I can swear that we played them all the way up to 1987. I know it is just one year, but I am pretty sure that Chris Ferrell and his class played them their senior season.

Old Pirate says theys plenty of great games in the 60s, 70s and 80s for sure. Dad burnit this here thread is starting to make OP get fared up. Now there is some old pirates that could lend some insight on more older games when most players actually had whiskers. :roflol:

I know for a fact that Chris Ferrel didn't play them in '86 or '87. It was his sophomore season he threw the bomb down there at the end on a 4th & 30 to beat them in Stevenson. They refused to come up for the last game ever in the series and canceled before the season. North Jackson's first season was in 1988. Ironically, while good, NJ has never been the powerhouse Stevenson was and should be a lesson for those in Marion County that are constantly babbling about merging the 3 schools. That includes academics and athletics.

You are right...Uncle Dave just remembers the Pirates in 87 playing Bridgeport in the last ever meeting between the two schools and evidently forgot about them not playing Stevenson.

I definitely agree about merging schools....some folks think that would improve everything but Uncle Dave believes a bigger school would just hurt the kids.

Way too many to list. Some of the ones off of the top of my head though, even though it was a loss, 1994 against the Warriors in SP. If Perry doesn't get knocked down when he throws the pick six to Westmoreland then those teams are still playing today.

Almost every game against Trousdale.

1987 in Jasper.

1990 at Polk. It wasn't really a great game but struggling South Pittsburg goes to state ranked Polk County to pull out a victory. We had to block a field goal near the end and then kick a field goal in OT to win. One of the only, if not the only, time the Pirates have had to kick a game winner. Unfortunately I can remember losing a few due to a field goal.

Speaking of which, BGA when Matt Vick booted the game winner in the final minutes. Great game that we fell short in. BGA was the better team but the Pirates played lights out in that game and could have pulled it out.

Boyd in '99. Also in '06 & '08 I believe were the years. '06 a Cody Robinson QB sneak with 34 seconds on the clock and '08 Boyd touches the onside kick half a yard too soon. Also both games against Boyd in '98.

Copper Basin in '87. Tough hard hitting game. The Pirates scored 3 times in less than 1:30. Otherwise a very tight game.

A few old timers love to mention '69 against the Warriors. Wigfall vs. Brown.

Come on OP give us your breakdown of the best games.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
