Question for old timers

I am working to get ahead on some entries for a football publication for the 2011 season. Can any of you recall what year the current overtime rule took effect in Tennessee High School football? I've checked just about every online source I know of, and have asked some folks I thought might be able to help, but can't find it. Coaches and others who have been around a while - can you remember what year it was?

I am pretty sure it was 1969 or 1970..............reason I know this is I may of had the first overtime game in Tenn. I was HC at old Donelson HS and we tied old Cameron HS, and it went in to OT. We Lost (LOL). I believe it was 1969

My records show games ending in ties as late as 1972, so I would assume 1973 was the year that ties were played off in overtime.

 

coach763, in the listing of scores for that 1969 game, the Nashville papers were showing that game ending in a 0-0 tie, so if overtime were played, the papers missed it. In fact, the papers from that year show each team having another tie game (Cameron with Litton and Donelson with Two Rivers).

 

An interesting trivia question would be what one Tennessee program has had a tie game since 1973? If there's more than one, I haven't seen it, but I do know of one.

Yep, 1969 seemed a little early to me, too. I graduated from high school in 1976, and I am thinking it was either while I was in high school or shortly there after.

1973 season is the correct answer HTV. I remember it like it was yesterday. I do not recall though if the format has changed any over the years.

On the format, one thing I was able to find is that the High School Federation has changed the OT rule to mimic the college rule, in that the starting point for each team is now the 25 yard line. It gives each state association the option of staying with the old rule - the 10 yard line being the starting spot, which Tennessee still employs - or going to the 25 and playing it like it is played in college.

 

I would like to see Tennessee adopt the college rule. The 10 yard line is just too easy in this day and time. The 25 still gives the defense an opportunity to make a play and it would bring the kicking game in to play, as well.

You are right, the first year of overtime play in Tennessee High School Football was the 1973 season. That season (1973) was my jr.year and we played an overtime game that year, the first year after the rule change.

You are probably right!(I am old and memory plays tricks)............I did play one early on; reason I "think" I know that is because I was ill prepared, and from then on would always include "overtime" practice in all pre-season scrimmages

One question guys.During the 1938,1969,70,71 and 1972 seasons that a playoff was in effect,there must have been something set in order to break a tie during the playoffs had it happened.I know the regular season is different but what was the deal in the playoffs ?

To spare any faux buildup or drama, it was Ridgeway in 2005. They played a team out of Arkansas to a 20-20 tie in 2005.

 

Speaking of Ridgeway, I see where they are playing a team out of Dallas in 2011. That should be a heck of a trip down to Texas for those boys (which in itself leads to another question - which is the only Tennessee program to take on a school from Texas in the modern era?).

To spare any faux buildup or drama, it was Ridgeway in 2005. They played a team out of Arkansas to a 20-20 tie in 2005.

 

Speaking of Ridgeway, I see where they are playing a team out of Dallas in 2011. That should be a heck of a trip down to Texas for those boys (which in itself leads to another question - which is the only Tennessee program to take on a school from Texas in the modern era?).

 

Dont forget Hillsboro/Franklin calling it a "tie" a couple of years ago due to weather.
