Gerry Bertier's Official Unofficial Preseason Poll

Recommended Posts

1. Alcoa- 7 Time Defending State Champions will add another Gold Ball to the trophy case this season as they return an abundance of talent on both sides of the ball. The difference in Alcoa and the rest of the state is their offensive line. Look for them to be solid all season as they go for another undefeated season and gold ball.

2. Milan- Bulldogs lose some key players especially Coleman who will be in Kentucky Blue next season. However, they return a solid core on offense and defense. Don't be surprised to see Milan back in Cookeville next season.

3. Goodpasture- The Cougars may have the most explosive player in 3A in Keenan Reynolds. If Coach Martin will open up the offense and use Reynolds skill set, the Cougars could make a deep run in the playoffs.

4. Polk Co.- The Wildcats had a solid 2010 campaign and look to build upon last year's success. The physical play of the Wildcats will be hard for most 3A teams to handle, except for Alcoa.

5. CAK- The big question for CAK is who replaces Quinn Epperly as he heads to Princeton? If they can find a suitable replacement, they may be able to overtake Polk Co. and have their annual match up with Alcoa in the 3rd round.

6. Loudon- The Redskins are the most underrated team in 3A because of the district they play in. For the last years they would have made one or two state championship appearances had they been in the West.

7. Westview- The Chargers won their district last year and Coach Coady always puts together a solid squad. They will go as far as their O-Line takes them.

8. Tyner- The Rams will look to jump into the top tier of 3A this season, after an up and down 2010 season.

9. Fairview- The Yellow Jackets are coming off their 2nd 10 win season in score history. They have alot of speed, but graduated some key players. If they can develop an O-Line they may be able to get past the 2nd round for the 1st time in school history.

10. Camden- Coach Ward is gone, so will the Lions continue their success. We will see how the 2011 will be with early season match ups against Lipscomb and Westview.

Others to watch for: Elizabethton, Austin East, Sweetwater, Smith Co., Cheatham Co.,

Thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Gerry I agree with you on the most part. Polk Co. lost a lot of Seniors, i think they still win there district, but not a top tier team this year. Two left off are Sequatchie Co. and Bledsoe Co., each team coming off great year with a lot of seniors. Sequatchie has a experienced line and a ton of atheletes, Bledsoe brings back 10 of 11 starters.

Gerry, you asked about replacing Epperly at CAK. While losing a QB as good as Quinn would significantly set most teams back a couple of notches, I believe the new QB for the Warriors will be very effective. Of course he will have to grow into the position but he is capable. CAK seems to produce good QB's and Receivers every year. He filled in admirably last year for Epperly at Loudon in a big game situation that turned out to be a shootout. I think the bigger question for CAK is depth, even more so than usual, and especially on the defensive side of the ball. If they can stay healthy then the Warriors should have another solid team capable of winning a lot of games, but just one more injury on the defensive side and they will have to pull some rabbits out of their hats. This years team has a lot of weapons but just as many questions. It will be interesting to see how the 2011 Warriors develop.

East Lit could make some noise as they were a playoff team last year and if i'm not mistaken they return quiet a bit to an already athletic team...

It is really Alcoa and the rest of 3A. Bigger up front in the OL than last year. They have a running back that may score 50 TD this year. Defense will be experienced at LB this year. Most likely will two platoon both lines. Defense will get better as the year progresses. Some teams may score but will not be able to stop the Tornadoes. Tough non-district schedule will benefit them at play-off time.

I think Milan and Goodpasture will come out of the west. Tyner and Bledsoe will surprise.

Well this I already know, but I was just curious about East Literature. I watched them play one game last year and thought they were a very athletic team. I also had heard they wasn't losing much from last years team that did make the playoffs.

I don't see the lines platooning, but players rotating in and out often.

Thanks for the consideration Gerry B but the Cubs are just looking to return to the playoffs this year before being considered for any type of "Top 10" status. Missing the state playoffs the last 3 years has been a hard pill to swallow.

    • They will probably, struggle
    • Dyersburg is going to be good, really good. As mentioned, they have a lot of talent on the way and the trio of Chelby, Joya, and KayKay will only be better with a full season together under their belt. To me, playing in Murfreesboro two consecutive postseasons will only serve to make them more dangerous if/when they stand among the final eight teams this March. Experience, good or bad, always makes you better. And not only do they have experience, they know how to win there. Schedules are coming together for all of the teams and I am excited about what I am seeing on the preliminary drafts on Dyersburg’s schedule. I know I am being a tease, but it’s simply not my place to announce what another school is doing. With that said, I won’t go into specifics. However, I am excited about renewed home and away contracts for the non-district portion of the calendar. I think west Tennessee will have a lot of interest as well.
    • What does everyone have in the final 8? In no particular order. 1. Eagleville 2. Gordonsville 3. Greenback 4. Oakdale 5. South Pitt/ East Robertson-- not sure 6. Richland 7. Halls 8. Union City
    • They struggled to field a team last year. I don’t see them being much better?
