They have been pretty successful with the "diesel package" on 4th down conversions so I forgot we had a punter

One turkey cooked one more to go, dressing in the crockpot, and something sweet for barb. Leaving out at 8 in the morning should get there in time for some fellowship and tailgating. Looking forward to hopefully a great game and maybe a short ride home. Look me up barb, remember I will be the one with DADX5 on the back of my hat, just like 09, hopefully. Everyone be SAFE. GO CATS!!!

A large group of Greeneville High School seniors will take the field at Burley Stadium for the final time Friday night, and that group has a chance to win their 50th game as a football player for the Greene Devils.

"It's just a great accomplishment for that group of seniors," Coach Caine Ballard said. "Most players don't play more than 40 games in a career, if they play them all. This group has a chance to win 50 ball games in their four years."

Ballard knows this 50th win won't be easy. It's the state semifinals, and the winner goes on to Cookeville next week for the state championship.

Giles County's Bobcats will be the opposition, the same school that took the 2009 championship away from the Greene Devils at Cookeville in a 21-14 thriller. There's a lot of similarities between this Giles County and that 2009 bunch, Ballard said.

"They look like a clone of that team," he said. "Their quarterback (Al Cobb) is even wearing the same number that Bo Wallace (the 2009 quarterback) wore. They are a young team (only 10 seniors on the roster), and you look at the number of juniors making plays for them, including the quarterback, and you know they are going to be good for a while."

Al Cobb has some impressive numbers. For the year he has hit 177-of-280 passes for 2486 yds. and 20 touchdowns. Kenton Baker has caught 74 of those tosses for 1179 yds. and 11 touchdowns.

Giles County is coached by David O'Connor, who was on the sidelines when the Bobcats won the 2009 state title over Greeneville. One great similarity in the 2009 and 2011 teams, Ballard said, is that Giles County is "extremely well-coached."

Giles County is 10-3 on the year. Losses came during the season to Lincoln County (27-14), Marshall County (26-7) and Lewis County (51-28). In the playoffs the Bobcats have beaten DeKalb County (35-28), Brainerd (20-12) and last week Marshall County (28-0) to earn the right to face Greeneville, who is 12-1 on the year.

Friday night's victor moves on to Cookeville on Dec. 3 for the BlueCross Bowl, the Class 4A championship, against the winner of the other state semifinal game this week between Covington and Maplewood.

Ballard said the football team and coaches enjoy spending Thanksgiving Week still on the gridiron.

"This is the fifth year of playing football during Thanksgiving Week," Ballard said. "On Thursday we'll practice early and get the kids home in time for family. We practiced Wednesday morning. We'll try to stay with the routine the best that we can."

Giles County will present some problems with a multiple offense, led by a quarterback who has "a great arm, likes to run it, and is just a competitor."

Ballard noted that at this stage of the year, not much changes in the scheme of things as coaches try to come up with the sets and formations that give them the best chance to win.

"Our players and coaches have put in a lot of work over the past four years to get these kids to where they are now," he said. "We'll try to be multiple. We do have some things that we haven't used this year that we certainly will use if we need to, because this is not the time to leave anything in the bag."

The coach said there has been some talk this week about Giles County being the school that beat Greeneville in 2009 and sent them home with the silver ball, not the gold ball like the one they lugged home from Cookeville in 2010.

"Our seniors, and several played in that game, talk about it, but not much," Ballard said. "It's a rematch of the schools, but not of the teams."

Ballard said his Greene Devils are healthy and all should be ready to take the field for the 7 p.m. kickoff.

*With school not in session the remainder of the week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, tickets for the Friday night state semifinal game between Greeneville and Giles County will go on sale Friday at 3 p.m. at the home stand ticket booth.

This was in todays Tennessean:

Giles Co. (10-3) at Greeneville (12-1): Giles County defeated Greeneville for the 2009 4A title, with the Greene Devils returning to the final last year and winning. This year’s Bobcat team is young and has dealt with injuries, but junior quarterback Al Cobb has been a mainstay (3,413 total yards, 27 TDs). Greeneville 35, Giles Co. 31.

Good article Barb. I did find it interesting that the starting QB has only 80 pass attempts in 13 games. I was expecting a lot more...and a little more balance with such a high scoring offense.

Two things contribute to his low passing numbers... 1. He only plays 2 1/2 quarters per game and 2. WE RUN THE BALL!

Good point that addresses a lot of issues for the Devils.

QB has good arm and good receivers. Not an issue of can't throw.

Devils are often accused of running up the score. We have been up early most of the time this year and the coaches have kept the ball on the ground out of respect for the other teams. Contrary to popular belief Greeneville does not intentionally run up the score.

Look at some of the average yards per carry. Just hasn't been necesarry.
