CHARGERFAN
I think a lot of the message board stuff that gets posted before games is useless "my brother can beat up your brother" type of talk. Having said that, here is why I think Covington will compete hard in Friday's game. This Covington team has a strong will to win. There were lots of games this year when the team could have said "just not our night" and taken a loss, but didn't. The first win against Dyersburg, we were down going into the 4th quarter and scored 2 touchdowns to win. The win at Obion County we were down 22-7 with seconds left in the first half, and took the kickoff and moved the ball for a TD before the end of the half to bring the score to 22-14, then opened the second half with a drive to score, convert for two and tie the game at 22. It was our game from that point on and I am convinced that the late play in the first half won the game for us. We won the second Dyersburg game (playoff, round 1) on a TD run with 27 seconds left in regulation. We beat OC in the playoffs (round 2) when we scored a 4th qtr TD pass on 4th and 7 to tie that game and send it to OT, then won in the 2nd OT. We beat Chester County (round 3) after trailing 13-6 at the half. Do you see a pattern here? Covington is not invincible, but the team does have a "refuse to lose" attitude. Even in our loss at Milan, we overcame some early turnovers and mistakes to score in the 4th quarter and just barely missed making a 2 point conversion to tie that game. And, Milan is still playing too, so that tells you something about their team and about ours. So, Maplewood could win this game. However, if Covington is ahead or within striking distance in the 4th quarter, I think that they will find a way to win. GO GHARGERS! CHARGERFAN
Today's Commercial Appeal article on this game says in part: "By night's end, however, the Chargers (11-2) could have three 1,000-yard rushers in their backfield. Junior Johnston White (5-9, 165) took over when Carlos Williams was hurt in the second game of the season. All White did was gain 2,046 yards on 200 carries, breaking Memphis Tiger Michael Grandberry's single-season Covington record with 21 TDs and six 200-plus yard games. "Johnston has got some speed, but he's really patient, letting blocks develop before making his move," Wheeler said. Like Williams, senior fullback Terrence Pierson hurt a shoulder the same night. Senior Colliar Robinson (5-7, 190), filled in with 1,299 yards and 19 TDs (two more by air). Pierson has 961 yards and 11 scores since returning in mid-season, including a 250-yard night. He had three second-half scores as Covington rallied from a 13-6 deficit to beat Chester County in the quarterfinals. The trio has broken the team single-season rushing mark set by the 2000 state runnerup squad." LSUbound
Maplewood has the total package on both offense and defense. Maplewood wins this one big and moves on to Cookeville to take on Greenville. Good Luck Panthers! Don't get ahead of yourself now! Covingtons always underestimated! HUSKER
This will be the better than any game across the state tonight even better than riverdale vs maryville. I am gonna go with Covington because I think they are a better all around team. Husker says Covington 36 -

I am gonna go with Covington because I think they are a better all around team. Husker says Covington 36 - 28 I'm curious as to the quality of Covington's defense. No mention has ever been made of them in this thread, just their offense (particularly the backfield). Conversely, Maplewood's defense has been seen as better than average by some. While its offense has been observed as one-dimensional, but passable. In the last two games their primary offensive weapon (Vanlier) has either been neutralized (Liberty) or knocked out of the game (White House in the first quarter). And yet they still found a way to score. I'm guessing the key to game is Covington's defense and not their backfield.
