Reid was not the only coach "talked to" behind Bland's back. This is being portrayed as Reid is the "golden boy" and the torch is being passed down by the administration...not so.I've no idea how many were contacted,or for how long this went before the "secret" was leaked back to Bland and he confronted them, but It wasn't a short time.Probably should have kept my "mouth" shut, but it sticks in my craw for this situation to be spun to look better than it was...no matter how bad that looked,it's actually worse.

Are you telling me that the Humboldt administration shopped around for a coach during the season and that Reid wasn't the only guy that talked to? How can you be sure?

No Idea if the job was officially offered, but yes...at least one other was approached, and for the "how I'm sure" part...I was aware that a change was probably coming about six weeks ago, before this supposedly happened according to the administration.I was under the assumption that Bland was leaving of his own accord,so the way that this unfolded blew me away as much as anyone else, and I'd rather (I won't) not elaborate on the contact,or how I was aware of it.In the other coaches defense...I don't believe that he knew that the administrators were scheming to "oust" the current(at the time) HC either.

I wouldn't expect you to elaborate any further but this is mind boggling. A few heads should roll over this one but not enough people over there care for that to happen.

My goodness what a week! It sometimes amazes me how sports driven we are, and how events can so easily divide us and move our focus from what is really important. A man, me, was fired from a coaching position and another, Junior Reid, was hired. The cyber network went wild. There is no doubt that we both have our advocates in this issue. The point that needs to be focused on is the young people who are watching how we react.

Everyone knows that this could have and should have been handled better. A lack of trust caused the problem, but the deeds are done. We need to move on and make this a positive move for the Humboldt High School community. The football team will be a great one next year. They know they are expected to be one of the best in Humboldt history. It really won’t matter who the coach is. Coach Reid will do a great job with the support of the community and his administration. I am, and will be, a supporter of Humboldt’s team, and especially those players who I have been privileged to coach.

Football is a fine game when it is coached and played with honor. There must be love and honesty between coach and players. I hope I have given the young men who I have coached with at least an inkling of that feeling. These children kept me young. I hope the stupidity of the adults and our silly battles over egos in this event will be overridden by the love we have for them, and that they will be able to take the best from us and discard the rest. I also hope no bridges have been permanently burned, and that I can be considered a friend of the school system. The other coaches on the football staff are extremely loyal, and that loyalty is to the players as much as it is to me.

My wife Martha and I have loved Humboldt High and all of the children we have met. My time there has been a wonderful experience. Butch Twyman and Ron Canada showed confidence and trust in me to hire me, and I am very appreciative. The faculty and staff always have been a joy with which to work, and we will always cherish the experience. Life is to live, and we hope we have been an example of a couple living it right. Certainly, we are disappointed and hurt that this could happen to us in Humboldt, but God did not put us here to be ordinary, so let’s not be.

His letter mentions the words love, honor, loyalty, appreciation, confidence and God.If the administration had learned from this man as much as the kids did...the letter would've never been written. He also mentioned not being ordinary, and being an example...mission accomplished Coach Bland.

This really makes you wonder what the administration wants a coach to be to his players. Bland has been a real example of class everywhere he has ever been. In the Jackson Sun in the past month, we have seen coaches that have been suspended (JCM), coaches that have been for inappropriate behavior....just simply put bad examples of what we want our young people to learn and be around. If Bland led his boys by example, had a winning record and was a good teacher, what message are the humboldt administrators sending to the players?

I also have heard some people in humboldt say that the administration are trying to right some wrong that has occurred. That someone in the past had promised Reid the job. I always learned you don't right a wrong by performing another one. (2 wrongs don't make a right???) I also have wondered what would have happened if the situation would have been reversed. What if Bland were hired to replace a very successful Reid? Would that have been a big deal to the community? I think it would have.

It Seems Only A Proud Few Give A Hoot Anyway...And From Fan Attendance At The Games It Even Proves More My Assesment...It's A Sad Day When You Show You Have No Morals ...Bland Is An Excellent Coach, And A Perfect Example Of Who We Want Educating our Kids...And Who We Want Around Them Teaching Them The Sport Of Football And Morals...I Would Encourage Members Of The Community To Run For The School Board And Oust These Hosers Who Have A Different Agenda Than What's Best For Your Kids...It Be Only Poetic Justice For Them To Be Fired As Well...

Never happen Butchie, the qualities that Coach Bland displayed so eloquently in his letter are in short supply nowadays...instant gratification is the ticket and the majority probably support the decision.Humboldt's football program was/is one any community should be proud of...not trying to "upgrade" by knifing a solid coach(and obviously stellar human being) in the back.It sticks in my craw that they're spinning this deal now that Reid was slighted by not having the job as promised earlier being the reason...HOGWASH.Not trying to slight Coach Reid...for all I know he's just as wonderful as they say,but the administration has shown their true colors...mostly yellow.
