According to: The Tennessean it had the list of the new AAA wrestling regions on USA TODAY HS SPORTS.

A very interesting comment was published:

"We never have formed regions with the idea of leveling the playing field," TSSAA assistant executive director Mark Reeves said.

It seems with the new formation it will do just exactly that. A large amount of state champions have come from the old Region 3 and 4 which had Soddy and Ool seperated from the Bradley and Cleveland schools.

It will make for alot of possible upsets early in next years state tournament because you may have several state medalist now who will not win their region. It appears that the playing field is being equalled to other schools and keeping the power area Chattanooga limited on state placers.

How is it an upset if the 4th place finisher is better than a 1st place finisher and he beats the 1st place finisher? That's not an upset, that's called stupidity.

This is another perfect example of why the high school state tournament needs to be seeded and not 'separated' by random selection. The top 4 from each region will qualify for state no matter how tough the region is but they need to be seeded and fairly separated on the state bracket. Its bad enough the regions are lop-sided but the state championship bracket should not be lop-sided. I find it strange that youth, middle school, and even regular-season high school tournaments are all seeded yet the most prestigious of them all is not.

 

A random blind draw is not fair to the wrestlers who earned a seed and fair path to the finals and possible championship through head-to-head wins. Seeding the state tournament will evenly separate the best wrestlers despite the uneven regions. Seeding the state championship will also promote more head-to-head matches through the season. More top-tier wrestlers will compete head-to-head through the season to gain seed position at the state championship, instead of dodging to protect their stats.

 

In my opinion, there's not much to do about the uneven regions. Regions are and should be aligned based on geographics and areas that are traditionally strong in wrestling will obviously be much stronger than other areas (regions) in the state. The only way for the TSSAA to compensate for this and create an 'even playing field' is to seed the state tournament. Seed placements can and have been the difference in wrestlers making the finals and even winning championships, especially in loaded weight classes. The effort made by these young men throughout the season necessitates an effort made by those in charge of the state championship.

Some regions have 8 teams while others have 15 teams? Assuming that every team in the region has a complete roster, what is fair about the fact that 50% of the wrestlers from some regions will make it to the state tournament while only 26.6% of the wrestlers from other regions will qualify for the state. I may not be a rocket scientist but 50% odds are much better than 26.6%.

Agreed, this is the biggest problem I see. Not that I would trade those odds to be in Region 4.

What he said was that this was not meant to level the field. In fact, it tilts the field against strong areas, because they will be getting kids eliminated who could have earned them points while ones of the same ability get there from weak regions. (This is not an issue in most sports, where teams qualify as a unit--the only other sport where it's an issue is track, and for various reasons, it's less of an issue there.)

Don't blame TSSAA. Blame all the coaches in both big and small schools that voted for the split. Blame whoever brought and force feed the proposal for the split.
