Noise Makers for '13 & 14 - All Divisions...

Try this out super simple. 1- 4 go to state from each region. (Once Again) If you don't place or your hurt or sick for the region you don't go to state. To seed the top 4 you use head to head. (no ifs ands or buts, bad call or not the winner is the winner) Last year shouldn't matter at all when it comes to seeding/placing wrestlers this year. If you placed last year "GREAT JOB" Do it again this year. Then go to matches won, then by pin. You can seed/place 2nds ,3rds, 4ths from the regionals the same way. In the event you have to many wrestlers in a bracket, the 4ths wrestle-in to the main bracket. The losers of the wrestle-in then go to the 5th and 6th place consolation bracket. This guarantees everyone to get two matches and still have a shot at a medal. No brains here but sounds super fair.

Good suggestions. Not a big difference in 1st & 2nd in a bracket usually. Putting the highest placer from a previous year is a Feel Good & places more value on past performance. I don't have a problem with that like, Koran Kennedy, Shotts (not Shorts), Boykins and Kramer all winning their regions and considering their previous placements if any. Someone on here was not impressed with freshman 106'ers, but Scotty's Little Brother at 220/Riverdale can't be downplayed too much. :) Edited by Sommers

Should your 220 be placed ahead of Kramer since he won at Region Duals?

Yes if they both win region Kennedy would be seeded over Kramer. Shotts would be seeded over both of them with wins over them both. That's how they would be seeded at any tournament.....except TN state.

Previous years results are always high on seeding criteria. Current seasons head to head is usually always at the top though. Both of these are over current wins and pins don't mean a lot except when comparing wrestlers that have split matches.

Here's an article by the old wrestling media vet, Ward Gossett, involving All Divisions in Chattanooga, including a <1000 school that once shocked the state by winning their region over Soddy a few short years ago....

Tournament Increases Chances For Many

The goal at Hixson High School hasn’t changed. Coach Garrick Hall and the Wildcats want to win the region wrestling tournament.

It could be easier this year with perennial region-title contender Soddy-Daisy moving to Region 4 along with Ooltewah and East Hamilton, joining the rest of the area’s Class AAA schools.

“We’re 900 students and we were competing against schools with somewhere around 1,400 students,†Hall said. “Our mindset hasn’t changed at all. It doesn’t matter who’s in the region. The whole goal is to try to win the region and get as many people to the state tournament as we can with the idea of competing for the state championship.â€

There still are traditionally strong programs in Region 2-A/AA including Central, East Ridge, Notre Dame and Red Bank. Still, the absence of the three AAA schools from the seeding meeting was odd.

“Every year you knew Soddy-Daisy was going to take that first-place trophy. Without them it puts A/AA schools up on the radar a little more,†Signal Mountain coach Joe Jellison said.

“I hadn’t even thought about it,†said Hall, whose team is hosting the first Region 2-A/AA tournament. “It may be a lot calmer, I think, and the change gives a guy who might’ve been a No. 5 seed [in the previous alignment] a better chance to get to the state tournament. You take those three teams out of it and it increases the opportunity for other schools — the smaller schools — to take some kids to the state tournament.â€

While their absence opens the door for smaller-school wrestlers, Soddy-Daisy, Ooltewah and East Hamilton are now in Region 4-AAA with Bradley Central, Cleveland, McMinn County, Rhea County and host Walker Valley. Four of those teams – Cleveland, Soddy-Daisy, Bradley and Walker Valley – were ranked among the top 10 in the final Tennessee coaches’ poll.

“I’m looking forward to this one more than the one last year,†Soddy-Daisy coach Jim Higgins said of the transition. “I’m excited about a different field, and in the long run we’ll be facing tougher competition before the big show. There are a handful of matches that could be state-finals matches, and it also incorporates some heated rivalries.â€

The change came after the TSSAA agreed to sanction a small-school state tournament.

“They’re trying to grow the sport. It is a chance for more kids to compete, and we’re competing against schools that are closer to our size,†Hall said.

East Ridge coach Chris Bird wrestled at East Ridge during a time when the region tournament included Baylor, McCallie, Notre Dame, Red Bank and Central — and when Soddy-Daisy was just beginning to blossom under Steve Henry.

“In my tenure as a wrestler and assistant coach, the region has changed four or five times. I guess I got used to it changing,†Bird said. “If the point of the TSSAA is to grow the sport, they’re doing the right thing.â€

The 2-A/AA tournament is one of three Tennessee qualifiers going on this weekend.

In another first, Division II teams are in their first year for a qualifying tournament. In previous years, Division II basically had an all-comers tournament at the state without anybody going through a qualifying tournament.

This year there are two qualifying regions: East/Middle and West. The East/Middle, which has more participation, will have six spots for each weight class and the West three. Before the start of the state tournament next week, the sixth-place finisher from the East/Middle will compete against the third-place finisher from the West for the right to advance into the state field. No state tournament points will be accrued from those matches.

The East/Middle regional is at Baylor and begins at noon today. The plan is to wrestle everything today.

“It’s basically a preview of next week,†McCallie coach Mike Newman said.

In a tournament nobody but the TSSAA seemed to want, Father Ryan won going away Friday at Baylor, scoring 273.5 points and qualifying 13 for next week's traditional state tournament in Franklin.

For the first time since the public/private split, Division II schools were required to have qualifying tournaments as part of their road to the state tournament.

"There were some great matches, just like there will be great matches next week," said McCallie coach Mike Newman, whose team finished second with 239 points. "I think everybody was grateful to get out of there without anybody getting hurt. There were some forfeits where one of the guys was dinged up and the coaches anticipated a similar matchup next week."

Newman was in such a hurry to leave the premises and get on to state-tournament planning that he was totally unaware that the Blue Tornado had finished a point better than city rival Baylor.

"I didn't even think about team awards," he said. "I was more worried about having our team meeting and getting everybody out of there so they could start resting up for next week."

Red Raiders coach Ben Nelson seemed to express a sentiment that ran throughout the tournament's coaching ranks. They had, after all, voted unanimously against having such a tournament.

"It seemed like a huge redundancy that was a big waste of resources -- teams having to travel and to take kids out of school," he said. "We wrestled matches that for the most part are going to be rewrestled next weekend."

The three traditional powers split the championships. Baylor and McCallie captured five apiece and Father Ryan had four. The Purple Irish ran up their point total by getting 11 to the finals.

The champions were Baylor's Michael Murphy (113), Donovan Sutherland (152), Bryson Popp (160), Ryan Parker (182) and Will Thomas (285); McCallie's Ethan Dendy (120), James Westbrooks (126), Adam Connell (138), Griffin Davis (145) and Trel Phillips (195); and Ryan's Eli King (106), Chris Wesnofske (132), John Hagey (170) and Ben Stacey (220).

Baylor, McCallie, Father Ryan and Montgomery Bell Academy each qualified at least 13 for Franklin, but Baylor, McCallie and MBA had sixth-place medalists who will have to compete in a single-elimination wrestle-in match against the West region's third-place finishers. Baylor and MBA had one each while McCallie has two.

MBA was a distant fourth with 194 points, and Brentwood Academy with 135 points was the only other team to top the century mark. Franklin Road Academy was sixth with 97, followed by Battle Ground Academy with 61, Ensworth with 36, Knoxville Webb with 8.5, Pope John Paul with 7, St. Andrew's-Sewanee with 6 and Donelson Christian Academy with 3.

regional

By Idris Garcia | February 8, 2014

The first day of the Region 2-A/AA wrestling tournament wrapped up Friday night with the host Hixson Wildcats atop the leaderboard with 54.5 points.

Hixson began with a pin from 132-pounder Grayson Layne to the delight of fans shouting, "Good start!" The fall set the pace for the Wildcats, who put 12 of their 14 wresters into the championship semifinals, scoring bonus points in 11 matches.

"You just have to keep wrestling and keep rolling," Hixson coach Garrick Hall said. "It's their tournament. It's individual and you have to want it."

An impressive East Ridge squad is nipping at Hixon's heels with 53 points. The Pioneers' total includes a semifinal win at heavyweight in the only semifinal bout wrestled Friday. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Chris Bird, the Pioneers will begin day two with 12 of their 13 wrestlers still competing.

Bird said his team will have to wrestle well on the back side of the bracket to give Hixson a run.

"[Our wrestlers] came out a little cold, but the guys wrestled as well as they could," he said. "They need to compete tomorrow. Tournaments are won and lost in consolation matches."

Rounding out the top five are Red Bank (41 points), Chattanooga Central (38.5) and Tyner (33 points).

Red Bank came into the tournament with only 10 wrestlers, but nine of them are moving on to the semifinals.

"We've had our best two weeks of preparation, and it showed tonight," Lions coach Shane Turner said. "They're going to beat us on depth, not quality. I don't see why we can't put nine guys into the state tournament."

All of the tournament's top seeds advanced into the championship semifinals, as day one of the area's first A/AA regional ever was short on drama, but today could provide fireworks as state qualifiers along with a tightly contested team race.

The finals are scheduled to be wrestled at 2:30 p.m. with the top four wrestlers advancing to the first A/AA traditional state tournament next week.

Clarksville area's best still in contention at region wrestling tournament

...West Creek in second in team standings

Feb. 7, 2014 | 0 Comments

Leaf-Chronicle

CLARKSVILLE, TENN. — More than two dozen wrestlers from the Montgomery County area are still on pace to earn Region 7 Individual Wrestling titles after the first day of the tournament wrapped up Friday night at Northwest High School.

Despite the threat of snow late Friday night, the tournament proceeded as scheduled with three weight classes pushing three area wrestlers into Saturday’s winner’s bracket semifinals. Kenwood’s Hamza Yunis, Rossview’s Charles Ladd and West Creek’s Jacob Kuhns all advanced to the 182-pound weight class semifinals.

At 195, Clarksville High’s Kiel Russell, Kenwood’s Omar Yunis and Northwest’s Andrew Slight advanced to the semis, while the state’s top-ranked heavyweight, Bruno Reagan of Clarksville High, West Creek’s Cory Wright and Northeast’s Dustin Beard advanced in the 285-pound division.

West Creek has been solid this season during the dual meet that ended two weeks ago, and the Coyotes sit in second place overall after Friday’s first day. West Creek finished the evening with 52 points and trails Wilson Central by 25 points for first place. Beech (51), Clarksville High (46) and Mt. Juliet (39) round out the top five in team points.

The tournament is scheduled to resume Saturday morning. Wrestling will begin around 10 a.m. The region championship and consolation finals are scheduled to begin around 3 p.m.

Reagan, who signed to play football at Vanderbilt during National Signing Day Wednesday, wrestled only one match Friday, pinning Hendersonville’s Reed Robinson 45 seconds into the match. The defending state champ at 285 is the heavy favorite to repeat as region champ as well.

Reagan is one of seven Clarksville High athletes who will wrestle Saturday morning with the hopes of advancing to the region championship match. West Creek matched that number with seven of its own that will compete in Saturday’s semis. Rossview has five, while Northwest and Northeast each have three and Kenwood’s Yunis brothers are still alive.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to next week’s state individual wrestling tournament in Franklin, and 33 other wrestlers from the Clarksville area are still alive for either third or fourth place in their respective weight classes. By the end of Saturday, the 50-plus athletes still eligible for state berths will be cut in half when tickets are punched for state competition at the Williamson County Ag Expo.
