Maryville's freshmen

The good thing is it allowed some new players a chance to play that may not have got that chance. One game against an out of town team used JV players which shouldn't have happened.

I only saw some of the frosh games, but I agree 100%. The experience gained by alot of those kids is invaluable. I had always heard how much other frosh enjoyed that year and I can see why. The involvement of the varsity coaches with the frosh is a big part of the success at murvil - IMO. They continue learning "the system".

 

Was the team that used the jv kids the first game? Just curious.

Yes. As long as GQ is there and we keep getting kids involved in the Cubs, Southerners, Raiders, etc., the future is bright.

Walker Valley High School ended up with a 4-6 worksheet this year and they happen to have a freshman class that comes in here and does what ever it wanted to do that day. There was one kid number 44 that had to have been 6-3 230 and played like Jack Lambert of the Steelers and he's not on the varsity that went 4 and 6. Then when the game was over a large group gathered near the old ticket stand on Cedar Street with a big tailgate party to feed the players and celebrate like they had just won the State or something. I'm sure they felt like they had beat the varsity that day the way they carried on which is fine with me because it should be fun but I have been around to long not to be able to see that there was a combination of JV and freshmen players.

Last year the freshmen played at least 2 JV/freshmen squads. I know West and Alcoa, possibly more. As a result, the JV only played 3 or 4 games.

Kind of curious about other freshman programs. Farragut's freshmen went 6-2 but had to play 2 freshmen/jv combo games due to other programs claiming they didn't have enough players. Farragut only had about 20 freshmen this year. Does anyone else see freshman football deteriorating? Will freshmen football disappear all together?

Football is under serious attack with concussions taking a large toll. I was told Blount County youth league numbers are dwindling. Maryville middle and freshmen numbers are going to be good as a product of such a successful hs program. IMO

Lenior City didn't play a freshmen game against Maryville.

Alcoa's Freshman went unbeaten this year. To my knowledge we don't have any Freshman starting varsity. However, I think the 2nd team center in the semi game was a Freshman.
