UTC Wrestling: Coach Eslinger Adds Two More To Class Of 2015-16

Saturday, April 18, 2015 - by B.B. Branton

A light weight state champ from Illinois and a junior college national champ who is a UTC wrestling legacy have signed with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for the 2015-16 wrestling season.

Cody Minnick is a two-time 1A Illinois state champ and according to UTC coach Heath Eslinger he should be in the mix to replace senior and NCAA qualifier Sean Boyle at 125 and wrestle four years at that weight 125 for the Mocs.

Former Georgia high school state champ Bryce Carr (West Laurens HS) won the NJCAA national championship in February for Darton State College (Albany, Ga.) and will wrestle at 165 for the Mocs next season.

He was 34-1 this past season and the four opponents (2nd-3rd-4th-8th) he beat in the tournament were All-Americans.

Carr’s wrestling career has mirrored what his dad (Gerald Carr) did on the mat who was a three-time Georgia state champ at West Laurens (1990-91-92) and a juco national champ for Lassen J.C. (Calif.) and selected as the NJCAA tourney outstanding wrestler in 1995.

Gerald wrestled for the Mocs in 1993, was Southern Conference champion and SoCon freshman of the year and an NCAA qualifier. He also wrestled two years for Minnesota after Lassen and was also an NCAA qualifier.

“I am thrilled that Bryce will be wrestling for the Mocs next season which will make it easy for the family to attend the home matches,†said Carr Friday.

“It is also special that he won his junior college national championship 20 years after I did.â€

And the dad and coach Eslinger hope Bryce can add another SoCon title to the Carr family trophy case and a trip to the NCAAs.

Notes: In 1995, Gerald Carr led Lassen JC to a tie with Garden City (Okla.) JC for the national team title…Garden City’s coach was Mark Leen who would become the UTC coach in 1996 replacing Ralph Manning.

Updates to recent story showing how Heath & Co are doing with our Mocs...

All totaled, UTC welcomes one of its most talented incoming class in recent history with six high school state champions and four All-Americans.

Carr and Minnick join six other Mocs who signed NLIs in the fall.  That group includes Roman Boylen (Douglas, Ga.), Chris Dbien (Cleveland, Tenn.), Dominic Lampe (Lebanon Junction, Ky.), Zach Shareef (Woodstock, Ga.), Chad Solomon (Maryville, Tenn.) and Andrew Webb (Lilburn, Ga.).

All totaled, UTC welcomes one of its most talented incoming class in recent history with six high school state champions and four All-Americans.

Love that were getting more talent closer to home including Tyler Garrison of Blackman

Chalifoux on the 2nd team? State Champion, Fargo All-American, placed at the National Prep School Championships and he defeated the wrestler that pinned the #1 selection! Who made the selection and what criteria was used?

Not sure cbg, maybe spreading out the glory some with a bit more d1 recognition in this area? This inspires some comparisons that only the Cleveland Duals, GP West & especially an annual grand championship can conclusively resolve...

It appears the 2015 d2 field is the strongest if you did a d1 vs d2 dual (and without Bradley's/Cleveland's lower weights it could be ugly... Of course MORE D1 depth to bump, BUT Perhaps a blowout without Garrison,,, tough one vs Sutherland, Kennedy vs Seagraves, & the following d1 wins involving Solomon, Russell, Filbey and Boykin/Evans).

ANY THOUGHTS OBSERVATIONS?

Look over the impressive d2 medalists vs d1

Love BB's pre-state d2 analysis last February (although he missed in a few spots,,, still really good stuff).

I for one was pleased with the Coach of the year selection, cbg

Who else could you give the COACH OF THE YEAR award to other that Pat Simpson? He puts 9 in the finals and has 7 champions. There is a reason Pat is called the CEO of high school wrestling coaches.

With regards to Chalifoux not being selected to the 1st team All-Mid State because someone wanted to spread the wealth is BS. You give awards to the person that is most deserving and you don't have to worry about anything. My guess is that the people involved in making the decision have one of two problems:

1. They are biased

2. They don't have a clue as to what they are doing

Like Terry Brands once told a reporter: We will settle this issue on the mat and it's not going to be pretty. Let's just hope that these two young men get to settle the issue next year.

Teams from all over

Comes to Kingsport TN to compete!

Here's coverage from the Chicago Area for the full story...

http://m.daily-chronicle.com/2015/04/25/gillum-lopez-undefeated-at-national-grade-school-wrestling-tourney/at4527w/

... Fifth grader Bradley Gillum has already competed against middle school wrestlers.

But in prepping for the AAU National Elementary Duals in Kingsport, Tennessee, Gillum trained against high school wrestlers.

The work paid off as he, and fellow DeKalb resident Damien Lopez, both went undefeated to help Illinois Blue win the tournament earlier this month.

"Training was even harder than the matches, because practicing with a freshman pushes me hard," said Gillum, whose sparring partner was DeKalb High freshman varsity wrestler Christian Komitas. "The matches were easier, not as hard as wrestling a high schooler."

The two were selected for the travelling all-star team by coach Matt Webster, and were the only two DeKalb representatives on the team.

"They're just both really tough kids," Webster said. "They come from a good club with good coaches. Both are pretty accredited throughout the state and have beat good kids throughout the state in tournament and even at higher levels. Both Damien and Bradley are some of the top kids in the state at their age and weight, and that was the reason we wanted on this team."

In its closest match, Illinois Blue defeated Pennsylvania West 42-37 to win the title. Gillum said the final match was the one that stuck out most of all. Not because it won the title, or helped him finish undefeated.

"It was the only one where someone scored on me," he said.

Illinois Blue was barely challenged in their six-team pool, winning all four matches as a team – including a 104-0 win against Indiana Outlaws Silver. Its closest pool play match was a 47-25 win against Iowa Black – which ended up fourth overall.

The team rolled through the gold bracket, opened with a 53-22 win over Iowa Gold, then beat Team Minion Black 57-24 in the semifinals.

Lopez said he enjoyed the experience.

"It was thrilling, it was motivating," Lopez said. "Just the rush of it was good."

Both have been wrestling for a long time – Lopez since he was four, Gillum since he was five. Gillum said he's hard pressed to pick his favorite sport – he also plays football.

Even though wrestling is an individual sport, the team aspect appeals to Lopez. The teamwork was certainly on display in Tennessee....

Changes at the GA small school powerhouse...

http://m.northwestgeorgianews.com/mobile/prep_central/high_school/schools/gordon_lee/wrestling-raby-leaving-gordon-lee-program/article_442801ea-ed1f-11e4-b356-9b4baa8f14f3.html

How many of you coaches out there can relate to this.?

WRESTLING: Raby leaving Gordon Lee program

Scott Herpst | Posted: Monday, April 27, 2015 4:52 pm

Citing a desire to see and spend more time with his family, Brent Raby said on Monday afternoon that he informed the school that he would not be returning as Gordon Lee High School’s head wrestling coach.

“I’ll miss Gordon Lee,†he said. “It’s a great school system and I’m thankful for the opportunity to be their wrestling coach. They have a lot of good kids in the program and a lot more coming up. I know they will be a team to be reckoned with for a long time to come.â€

Raby said he hopes to continue his teaching career closer to home.

“I don’t want to miss seeing my kids grow up,†he explained. “My wife teaches at Ringgold Middle and just trying to doing something as a family on Spring Break is tough because we are on different schedules. I just want to spend more time with my kids.â€

A Ringgold High graduate who wrestled for Hall of Fame wrestling coach Steve McDaniel, Raby first came to Chickamauga as an assistant under McDaniel before taking over as head coach five years ago.

Raby’s Gordon Lee teams finished in the top four in their classification in the state duals and state traditional tournament in four of his five years, winning Class A state duals titles in 2012 and 2013. The Trojans added their first and only state traditional title in 2013.

He also coached a four-time state champion in West Virginia University signee Jonathan Ragsdale, a three-time state champion in Alex Spires, and saw several more Gordon Lee wrestlers win one or two state championships.

“We had a pretty good run,†he said. “We got more accomplished in five years than some programs have ever done and I’m very proud of that.â€

He said he didn’t know who would be taking over as the Trojans’ head coach, but said he felt better about his decision knowing that Ricky Murdock would be remaining with the program as an assistant.

“He’s the best assistant in the state of Georgia in my opinion,†Raby said. “He had some good teams at Dade County before he came to Chickamauga. He works hard and puts a lot time into the program. We couldn’t have accomplished what we did without him.â€

Raby also added that the wrestlers themselves deserve most of the credit.

“Ricky and I have the same philosophy,†he added. “If the kids put the time in and work hard, good things will happen. Trophies are just picked up at tournaments. They are earned in the practice room. I came into a good situation because Coach McDaniel layed a good foundation and was fortunate to work with him for a while as well. I have a lot of memories from a lot of kids at Gordon Lee that I will never forget.â€

Phenomenal WIN Cover Featuring CHRIS DEBIAN...

http://clevelandbanner.com/stories/debien-featured-on-the-cover-of-win-magazine,7840

DeBien featured on the cover of WIN Magazine

CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLER Chris DeBien has been chosen for the cover of the April edition of WIN Magazine, the nation’s top source for wrestling on all levels, from high school to the Olympics.

WIN MAGAZINE PHOTO

RICHARD ROBERTS Banner Sports Editor

The kudos and accolades keep piling up for Cleveland High School wrestler Chris DeBien.

The four-time Tennessee State wrestling champion, National High School Coaches Association Nationals tournament champion and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga signee received another national honor this month with his photo on the cover of the April edition of WIN Magazine — the largest wrestling publication in the country.

Known as “The voice of wrestling,†WIN (Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine) spotlights all national wrestling action, from NCAA and NAIA championships to high level high school events such as the NHSCA, Beast of the East, Ironman and Cadet/Junior Nationals.

The magazine also provides in-depth information about American wrestlers on the international wrestling scene and has been at every Olympics championships and many World Championships since 1996. The April cover of WIN features DeBien in the 2015 NHSCA national tournament championship against Ben Lamantia, of New York. The photo shows DeBien taking Lamantia to the mat.

“I was ‘mat returning’ him to hold him down,†The Blue Raiders’ senior said with a smile.

DeBien defeated Lamantia 3-1 to win the championship.

Complete information on the NHSCA tournament can be found at www.win-magazine.com. For more information on WIN Magazine, published by Bryan Van Kley, call 1-888-305-0606.

The selection of the magazine cover came as a surprise to DeBien, who said he found out from a coach about the honor.

“I didn't know about it until coach (Josh) Bosken told me about it. It was kind of a surprise. It's pretty cool. There are a bunch of wrestlers in our country who can [call attention to] their magazine and I'm one of those. It's really cool I can be able to do that.†With more than 4,000 likes and even more friends on Facebook, WIN Magazine could be considered the Sports Illustrated of wrestling, the difference being SI covers a variety of sports while WIN concentrates solely on wrestling. “I would think it is (like Sports Illustrated),†said DeBien. “Wrestlers like Jordan Burroughs and David Taylor have sections in the magazine talking about their techniques and things like that.â€

The reigning state champion doesn't feel making the cover of WIN Magazine will necessarily be a boon to his wrestling future, but says it may be the beginning to one day having his name in print attached to his own wrestling column.

“I don't think it means anything career-wise other than it's another cool thing that I get to be a part of, and maybe one day I can be another Jordan Burroughs and have my own column in there,†he said.

Cleveland wrestling coach Jake Yost said DeBien's cover will send the message that the Cleveland area is a place to look for wrestlers seeking to be the best they can be and become a name in the sport.

“It's a cool thing for him and it's a great thing for our program. It kind of gives the wrestling community the idea we are doing the right things here to produce kids who can compete on the national level,†said Yost. “Kids throughout the country will see it. It gives people the idea that people from Tennessee and people from Cleveland High School can compete on the national level.â€
