Centrally located Murfreesboro is a great city.  My neighbors just retired here from New York and they love it so far.  We are close enough to Nashville to have easy access to great entertainment and culture as well as access to relatively cheap domestic and international airfares.

Murfreesboro has four Class AAA high schools which provide consistently strong athletic programs in the state in all sports.  Most notable for wrestling is Blackman High School.

Blackman is a steady top 10-11 program with a very passionate coach (Ronnie Bray) with knowledge from years at other programs, and the hard knocks on and off the mat. Also well known for his statewide accuracy in individual rankings.

Another good one in the area is coach Mark Gonyea at New school Stewart's Creek. Also with years of expertise and passion. Coach Ramsey Siegle, Jones Riverdale.

Btw... Zoning in Rutherford co is very strick. Side note: Blackman, Riverdale, Oakland, Siegle and Smyrna owns football statewide 'cept that darned Maryville the last two years. Blackman boys & # 1 nationally ranked girls basketball just won the state. Keep that in mind as you hear old Blaze stories. But, you should see the wrestling room they have now in spite of the past distractions... Hats off to the Boosters and Bray!

Oh, I'm not sure if a TN public school exceeds the academic excellence of Blackman now. (also with a cheerleading Nat'l championship)

Sommers...the last time I looked both Hume Fogg & MLK are public schools that are ranked very high nationally. At one time Hume Fogg was was a top 100 USA public school.

US NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Hume Fogg: State of Tennessee #1 National #37

MLK: State of Tennessee #2 National #113

Blackman: State of Tennessee #22 National #1981

CBG, Bit more... Blackman HS is a 2x Pacesetter award premiere high school + an impressive 96% graduation rate from incoming freshman,,, They are known for being only one of twenty five schools in the nation to receive this award out of over 1200 schools. The test scores are recorded above the state and federal average nearly every year.

Look up HIGH SCHOOLS THAT WORK, specifically under the Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools That Work initiative. Both Cumberland County High School and Blackman High School were nationally recognized by High Schools That Work... Blackman High School was recognized as one of the Top Ten high schools in the National network for Student Achievement.

Further, Blackman High School was recognized in the Top 50 schools in the national network for guidance services and providing extra help and extra time.

Vocabulary Inc has Blackman #1 in Nation ACT preparation.

Again, in 49 years Blackman is the first school to win both boys & girls basketball state championships. USA today & Mx-Preps has girls #1. Article coming out next week on USA Today.

Blackman's Coronary Arts may even rank up there with Coach Kramer's Wilson Central... He makes sure Hamm samples everything, if you haven't noticed those well fed boys! ψ(`∇´)ψ

Should be noted that Siegle is a top band down here, also near Blackman in overall academic achievement.

Our area's Central magnet school is also a premiere hs in the Boro like Hume Fogg, but no wrestling there.

US News & World report is considered by most to be the authority when ranking schools for academic achievement. When you start considering culinary arts, band programs, athletics, etc...it's possible to get a variety of results. IMO, if you really want to find out how strong a schools academics are see how many National Merit Semi-Finalist & National Merit Finalist the school has over the past ten years. While not a public school, Montgomery Bell Academy had the following statistics: Class of 2013; 21 (17%) National Merit Semi-Finalist, Class of 2014; 13 National Merit Semi-Finalist. Those numbers are unreal when you consider most schools will not have but one or two National Merit Semi-Finalist every five years.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'd say Father Ryan. Pat Simpson has a great coaching staff, and puts big emphasis on team effort. It's also a great school, and the training you would get there is elite. In the past three years Father Ryan has had eight wrestlers go to solid programs for college. MBA is also a great school, and will academically be the best bet. Other great schools are Baylor, McCallie, Cleveland, and Wilson Central.

If you're kid wants to wrestle in college, and he has the potential, Pat Simpson will get him there.
