STATE WRESTLING: Page loses in semifinals; CHS, FRA, Indy fall early

Ezekiel Demello added another clothes pin to the strap of his wrestling bag.

The Independence sophomore does that every time he pins an opponent.

He's got 15 pins on his bag now after sticking Soddy-Daisy's Chase Payne at 2:52 of the 113-pound weight class on Friday.

Despite his win, Independence lost 41-34 in the first round of the Class AAA duals at the Williamson County Expo Center in Franklin.

"Ezekiel got a huge pin for us in a match that probably on paper he was supposed to get pinned," Independence coach Jared Grindstaff said. "But after that we didn't quite perform at the level we could."

Demello used a bulldog move, one of his favorites, to pin Payne.

Independence's Ezekiel Demello recorded his 15th pin at the state duals on Friday.

"Honestly, I caught him and that really helped out our team," Demello said. "I honestly thought for myself that we could win, but I guess that we just weren't wrestling the way that we usually wrestle."

Independence (19-7), making it first duals appearance since 2013, will face Siegel in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Eagles led the Trojans 10-9 after the first four matches, but Soddy-Daisy took control by winning the next six bouts.

"It wasn't quite as close as the score," Grindstaff said. "They forfeited the last couple (of matches). There was only one other team that could have been a worse draw, with that being Bradley. But it is what it is. Every team is good."

Centennial falls: Centennial, making its first duals appearance since 2000, lost to Gibbs 44-15.

"They outwrestled us today," Cougars coach Phillip Pelkey said of the four-time state champions. "We knew that they were a pretty strong team. We saw them up at Soddy and they finished ahead of us."

Centennial (27-7) meets Bartlett in the loser's bracket at 9 a.m. Saturday.

"I thought we came out a little flat, to be honest," Pelkey said. "We knew that they were a leg-riding team and we worked legs in practice Tuesday and Wednesday. We had plenty of opportunities."

Cole Iler, who won by forfeit at 138, said nerves may have gotten to the Cougars.

"I think it was jitters," Iler said. "I don't think they should have beaten us that bad. Just minor mistakes."

Adam Fuller, who won by forfeit at 120, is glad Centennial ended a long wait by making it to state.

"It's really amazing to see our team come here despite the fact that we were kind of an underdog in our region," Fuller said. "It's kind of just lead by example. If you show that, even though we might be down, you can still bring it up if you guys work hard."

Ryan beats FRA: Franklin Road Academy lost its first eight matches en route to a 66-21 defeat to Father Ryan in the Division II quarterfinals.

The Fighting Irish are seeking their eighth state championship.

"I told our guys, 'We're probably going to lose this match. Just go out and kind of make it hard for them. Make them work and make them come off the mat saying, 'You know what, that wasn't easy, I don't want to do that again,' " Panthers coach Austin Marcum said. "But they're definitely a good team. It's their depth. They've got five guys in each weight class."

Drake Mitchell earned FRA's first three points when he took a 12-5 decision over Anthony Hagey at 160.

"I just try to go out and do the same thing," Mitchell said. "I don't want to psyche myself out because some people, especially with a team like Father Ryan, are kind of afraid of what's on their singlet instead of going out there and wrestling their best."

Mitchell is also a jazz pianist and a decathlete.

FRA faces Memphis University School in the loser's bracket at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Page splits pair: Page beat Greenbrier 45-30 in a Class A-AA quarterfinal before falling to Pigeon Forge 58-12 in the semifinals.

The Patriots meet the Notre Dame-Greeneville winner in the loser's bracket at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Division II Invitational: Brentwood Academy wrestles Knoxville Webb in a semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday and Battle Ground Academy faces Briarcrest.

Wilson Central's Alex Pergande gets ahold of Tennessee High School's Trent Nelson during the 113- pound match of their Class AAA duals quarterfinals.

FRANKLIN — Two teams that have consistently finished runner-up recently at the TSSAA State Wrestling Duals are still alive with hopes of bettering their results.

Father Ryan and Wilson Central are the only two Midstate teams still in the championship portion of the duals, held at the Williamson County Agriculture Center.

Father Ryan will face Baylor in the Division II finals at 7 p.m. Saturday, while Wilson Central will take on Soddy-Daisy in the Class AAA semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday. Bradley County and Science Hill will face off in the other AAA semifinal.

The finals are familiar territory for both teams. Father Ryan, which has won seven state duals titles, has lost in the championship match four years in a row, while Wilson Central has fallen to Cleveland in the last three AAA finals.

“We haven’t won this tournament in six years, and we’ve been in the finals about every year,†said Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson. “We’re trying to reverse that. It’s going to take our best effort. It’ll be a great match like it always is†when Father Ryan and Baylor face off, he added.

FRA's Alex Linthicum (top) battles Father's Ryan's Daniel Wesley in the 145-pound match of their DII duals quarterfinal.

Wilson Central coach John Kramer’s team is facing a similar obstacle in the path to the finals.

“We’re going to have to wrestle with a lot of heart,†he said.

Beech just missed punching its ticket to the AAA semis when the Buccaneers fell to Science Hill on a tiebreaker. A decision by heavyweight David Dowell and a pin by 106-pounder Brayden Palmer pulled Beech into a 33-33 tie, but the victory went to Science Hill because they had four pins to Beech’s three.

“You’ve just got to forget it,†said Beech coach Jeff Roberts.

The other five Midstate teams in the AAA tournament — Blackman, Centennial, Independence, Siegel and Stone Memorial — all lost in the first round.

Science Hill beat Blackman 39-33, Centennial fell to Gibbs 44-15, Independence fell to Soddy Daisy 41-34, siegel lost to Arlington 42-30 and Stone Memorial fell to Tennessee High 43-34.

Wilson Central opened the tournament with a 48-25 victory over Knoxville Halls. The Wildcats scored pins by Cullen Belcher (126), Nicholas King (132), Niko Noga (145), Zach Linton (170) and Isaac Hodge (220).

In the quarterfinals, Wilson Central raced to a 12-0 lead after three matches against Tennessee High. The Vikings rallied to take a 15-12 lead, but Wilson Central won the next four matches, beginning with a pin by Noga at 160 pounds, to take a 34-15 lead.

“Our lightweights stepped up and did a good job for us,†said Kramer. “Zach Linton bumped up to 182 and won a major decision. He did a good job.â€

“We were worried for a minute because we had everybody bumped up," added King. "But about 160 I knew we were OK. We want to get back to the finals."

To do that, the Wildcats will have to beat Soddy-Daisy in the semifinals for the second year in a row.

“Everybody has to wrestle well,†King said.

In the Division II tournament, Father Ryan opened with a 60-21 victory over Franklin Road Academy. The Irish won first eight matches with seven pins and a forfeit to take 48-0 lead and punch their ticket to a semifinal matchup with McCallie.

Again Ryan took a commanding lead early to secure the 38-33 win. “It’s always advance, that’s the bottom line,†Simpson said.

“We’ve lost in the finals every year I’ve been here,†said Trey Chalifoux, Father Ryan's senior 120-pounder and a defending state champion. “We have to stay focused. We just need to get it done this year.â€

Christian Brothers toppled Montgomery Bell Academy 32-21 in the first round.

Defending A-AA state champ Pigeon Forge sent Page to the consolation bracket with a 58-12 victory in the quarterfinals.

In the first round, Page topped Greenbrier 45-30 in the matchup of the only Midstate teams in the A-AA bracket.

One difference maker in this tournament was two heavy hitters MIA for Beech. 12 pt swing and little wind out of their sails.

They, The Bucks, should be back for individuals, Stewart's Creek could break the to ten, a little consolation for the dual set back.

As far as the duals, very impressive finish for easy Tennessee's performance!! Big and small schools.

State Dual Tournament confirmed the following:

Chattanooga (Cleveland) area is still dominant. Had 4 of the 6 Finalist.

Middle Tennessee did not perform as well as many people thought (Certain team peaking) or another team being pushed as a possible contender.

Red Bank is on the rise and Coach Turner is to be commemnded.

Father Ryan keeps getting challenged in Middle Tennessee by certain people only to be disappointed. I don't know what was worse, the start of the Father Ryan vs Baylor match or the Bradley vs Soddy Daisy match.

Officiating: I do not know where to start or end. The officiating this weekend was embarrassing. This is the state tournament and these kids work hard all year to try to win a state championship only to have unqualified officials call their matches and blow call after call. If the TSSAA only has a few qualified officials to call, they should call every match at the state. Do not put officials that are not capable of handling the situation in that position. I call them the "Not Ready For Prime Time Officials". This is not the place to work in new officials to call the tournament because they can cause disaster for a wrestler. These wrestlers deserve better and it should be demanded from the TSSAA. This weekend was terribly officiated.

Thoughts?

    • Im asking everyone to keep roy whited and his family in your prayers. Coach whited won back to back state championships at white county in 98-99. He is very well liked and respected in this area. For those of you that dont know he went missing 3 days ago. No one knows where he is. His truck was found in a rural part of the county. Thanks again. We are all very concerned.
    • West would be a good team to get behind if they can pull it off again like last year. That championship game last year was awesome.
    • I say that because he stepped out of a MUCH better situation on his own than he would see at least his first 3 years at DCA and it would take at least that much to bring him back to coaching. There are other fish in the sea, but again money talks. Need to fix the girls hoops too. Now I'll try again. Who has Pierce locked in for his staff? Hearing a McGavock man but not the Iceman.
    • I’ve heard mostly good things from the gridiron. Lots of optimism. It sounds like the portal has mostly helped, though there are a few expected defections. Comeback year!
    • Rudesell 1 year at Crockett. Coach Tate 2 weeks a Bradford. South Gibson supposedly going with jcs middle school coach. Which isn’t who I thought would get it, I know the top 2 was between him and Obion girls head coach.
