Region 2 Tournament

District 3 swept the night Saturday.

-OR wins in a steel cage match against Farragut.  Don't need to say any more than it ended being a street fight due to loose officiating.

-Central gets by a streaking Heritage.  Heritage peaked at the right time, but Central had too much for them Saturday.

-Powell upends Bearden, which was the biggest surprise of the evening IMO. (Did I hear correctly that Blevins resigned after the game?

-Karns comes back against Maryville.  Karns was close to even (maybe minus 1 or 2) on the offensive glass against a much more physical Maryville team.

Still sticking with OR over Karns in the region championship.

That appeared to me and those around me an attempt to hurt Tee. And I'm not sure why Coach Green was issued a technical. I was sitting right behind him and didn't hear anything out of the ordinary, and he was calm!?

Aaron got the T on a call against Tee under the basket. He clearly didn't make contact with the Farragut player but got called. Then two foul shots and the T shots he was really hot. Then he was made to sit down bout says it all. They planned to control Arron Green before coming to the game. Let the kids play keep the adults out of it.

Course it was fitting when the Farragut coach got T'd up! And that felt pretty good, too.

None of Powell's 3 games against Oak Ridge have been close this season, so it'll be interesting to see if the Panthers utilize the same strategy as Farragut did against OR. Until TSSAA adds a shot clock, there is always a chance that a team will milk the clock.

That is always the great neutralizer when a coach/team have the forethought and patience to slow the game way down to try and counteract a more talented team.

Need a shot clock because coach look devised a game plan and Coach Green had no answers. It's called coaching. Maybe O.R. and Coach Green should have figured out a way to speed up game. Press, half court trap, more pressure in their man to man. Instead of changing the rules how bout giving Farragut credit for executing a game plan that exposed O.R. and gave them an opportunity to win. Wildcats Farragut found your weakness look for more of the same as you wade through the post season.

Right. They asked Green about that after the game and he said we will be better prepared next time. He said they had worked on a trap D before the Farragut game with the feeling that they would do that, but we didn't execute it well according to him. To Farragut's credit they have some really good ball handlers on the perimeter. I hadn't seen them play this year, but from what I've heard that's their forte, so to say, and we weren't well prepared for it. I wouldn't doubt a bit if Powell doesn't try the same thing, but I think we will be much better prepared this time around, at least I hope so. Edited by SweetScience

A shot clock still needs to be implemented in HS. I've always thought their should be one, even before that game. Every other level has it, so why not HS? A good game plan, yes, but nobody pays to watch a team hold the ball 3-5 minutes every possession. It's a ripoff.

I would think that if OR sees the same strategy again, especially in back to back games, it won't be as effective; they should be ready this time around. Farragut likely caught them off-guard. If I'm Aaron Green at this point, I would expect to see that strategy for the remainder of the region tourney. Even if OR has an off night, I just don't think Powell, Karns, or Central can beat OR straight up. Those teams are probably going to have to minimize the number of offensive possessions to have a chance.

I agree with you, and yeah, they did catch us off guard. I give them credit, but I also give us credit for overcoming it in spite of not being well prepared for it, and still finding a way to win. Coach Ogan for your Panthers was always good at having a ball control offense against us. That's why he had so much success against us, but it helped to have a guy like Fields at the point running the show. That guy killed us. I was glad to see him and that white kid go (can't remember his name) lol.

From what I can tell, Barnes wants to do a lot of the same things that Ogan did, simply because they work when executed properly. Powell doesn't have a point guard like Fields this year, but they do have a few shooters. As usual, a pretty fundamentally sound bunch. They just don't have the all-around team to compete with an athletic group like OR straight up. I hate to use the word "gimmicky," but that's what Powell will have to do to beat OR this year; I expect them to try something to slow the game down.
