Brian,  Here's what you are missing here.  When you have tough matches, for 5 rounds, with any kid being able to beat any kid, it changes the tournament. You should know.  You probably could have been a regional finalist and probably top 8 in the state under the current criteria. If it were one tournament (1) public and private, this years champ would have probably been Beech.  Do the math....In the old days, if you had 3 kids place high.... you win.  Do you think Ryan or Baylor would have had 3 kids place top three  if it were one state?   No way!

Do you think the state champs had tough matches in all 5 rounds? You honestly don't think Ryan and Baylor would have had 3 kids place in the top 3? They would have had that many champions each and probably more.

Are you kidding????? Beech would place at 106, 145 (Murphy would crush him and probably Dendy too), and 182 (Whimper wins 8 of 10). Both Father Ryan and Baylor place 6 or 8 guys in top 5 (you actually get points besides placing in top 3). And Bradley isn't affected much. How do you figure Beech?????? That makes zero sense. I'd also like you to point out how many State Champs have "tough matches for 5 rounds". Edited by Newestguy

At some weight classes some years, I've seen as many as 6 returning medalists in the same weight class, but usually the top seeds get 2-3 challenges at best in TN.

PA, CA, NY, OH, IL, MI parody is the case, especially CA- NY sectionals are bad enough & OH/PA.

GA would be great for the South if it weren't so watered down.

113- D1 had a returning medalist this year one (springfield)didnt make the regional.

I believe he (Shelton) did not make it out of the Regions because he quit the team the week of the Regionals.  He did not wrestle.  Not sure your point.

Oh, my bad.  Seeing how you think Beech would have won a combined state, I digress.  Quit drinking the funny stuff.

A combined state would have Ryan running away with it and Baylor finishing 2nd followed by Bradley in 3rd.  Beech is an afterthought and not even in the conversation.

113 always has a million returning medalist. That doesn't mean they are that good or the weight is that tough. It simply means they were more than likely at 106 the previous year and were mostly all freshmen. Of course 113 will have a bunch of returning medalist. 106,113 are just age based tournaments no different than wrestling junior high for the most part

Yes Rg111, but let me take it a step further. The only 2 good weight classes are 145 and 152. After all, all the good athletes over 152 play football. And most everyone under 145 probably either wrestled 106 or 113 at one time or another. So obviously if you wrestled 106 or 113 you weren't any good (unless you were in junior high when you did) and if you grow past 152 you'll be a full time football player.

(I'm curious to see how many posters understand sarcasm)

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
