You sure about the top 3 in region 1. We've had some misfortune and lost 2 starters in the off season but we'll still be able to field a fairly solid team. Pitching or lack of is the key for us. Its early so guess we'll just have to wait and see. And yes Grace will be head and shoulders above the rest of us small rural schools.

I'm not as certain that will be the top three, but pretty positive the winner will be one of those, and fairly certain the to-do two will come from them, in my humble opinion.

And that's no disrespect to Hampton. But last year, Stone was the great equalizer. He could stand toe-to-toe with any line-up in the region, and come out on top more often than not. With him gone, that leaves big shoes to fill on the mound. He gave Hampton the ability to at least split a back to back home and home series.

Another thing I see Alot is "if only we could get the athletes out play baseball" and that's all fine and good, but baseball players will beat athletes at baseball practically everytime.

And I hate saying this, but it's the truth. Hardin is a good guy. But he is not the most qualified man for that job. If Hampton was serious about winning baseball games, VanTassle would have been made high school coach years ago. Hardin has done Alot in terms of improving the facilities at Hampton though, and that's the truth.

Yep we will miss Stone in a big way but if we can develop a couple of pitchers, we'll be dangerous for any of these teams.

Well UH just beat NG, so who knows. I saw UH only put up 3 runs in a DH with Washburn last week and they didn't not look sharp at all.

May be a lot of balance in this region. Even Cloudland is improving. Pretty bad in the field but at least they are putting a bat on the ball. Coach Peters is making a difference but he's pretty much starting from scratch.

Apologies for hijacking the District 3 thread.

No problem. I enjoyed your analysis of Region 1. Just stay in here and we'll all report on Region 1 & 2.

And I wouldn't count on Grace being head and shoulders above the rest. This team has a lot of hard work to do to be that kind of team.

Watch out for Greenback! They had one of the best 8th grade classes last year in middle school ball. They could have competed with some high school teams last year. I expect Grace to roll, but the fact of the matter is if your guys aren't/haven't been playing a little more than just school ball then they will struggle as the game is in a heavy shift to the travel ball game. I hate to say it but there seem to be several schools on board with the travel ball and some of the schools are being left behind.

. Thanks for the props! I tell you what we have 5 freshman in the starting lineup and somebody forgot to tell them they are freshmen! We gave GCA a great game at home losing 6-5 and had the tying run crossing the plate during a bang bang play at 1st. This in extra innings nonetheless. Could have been over on possible strike 3 called as a ball in top of 7th but it happens. Needless to say our boys feel confident they can win every game they play which is huge. We have one Senior who mostly DHs and they'll all be back next season while adding a fist full more current 8th graders who are now 5-1 in the MS season. It's a long season with a lot more work to be done but we have plenty of depth and players who can play multiple positions not to mention a bullpen of pitchers all with grit and great presence on the mound. All starters play football and a few play basketball as well. Heck 15 of 18 players play football. Imagine if they only focused on one sport, but what fun is that? Small 1A does it all!

Seems to be good times for greenback sports right now, and just continuing to get better. That 8th grade class last year really was one of a kind, and this years middle school team is good. There is only about 1 or 2 that I would expect to come off of this middle school team and compete. The rest need time for their bodies to develop before they produce at the high school level. Hoping to get to see you all play this year.

So...early returns:

#1 Grace

#2 looks like GB gets the early nod for 2nd

who's third?

What about 4a? Who's the favorite?

I wasn't necessarily giving Greenback the definite 2 spot, but there is a ton of potential there for them. I think it's a battle between GB Meigs Harriman and TP for the rest, midway is less than impressive this year. Region 4 I like Oakdale, Oneida, maybe OS with an upset of either team to give one of them the 1 seed.

Makes sense to me... Meigs is off to a good start. In 4a, a couple different people told that by the end of the year last year CF was the 2nd best team in the district, but not eligible for postseason. They only had one senior on that team... I know they return one of the two best pitchers in the district in the Morgan kid as well.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
