Memory Lane: 1991 Oak Ridge Wildcats (25-year anniversary)

I played on the 91 team and I know Shawn. I can tell you that Mr Football wasn't as important to Shawn as winning the state title. In fact, I'm sure he did but I never recall him even talking about Mr Football. I don't understand why any true OR football fan would try to belittle or downplay the accomplishments of Shawn Summers. Bladerunner would've done it and now RWK. Both were great players and both had very talented teammates. One beat the other 4 out of 5 times. I'm an OR fan yet I can't say anything bad about Helton other than he shouldn't have made the pitch that RB intercepted and I sure as he## can't say anything bad about Shawn. And I also knew Todd and I'll promise you he remembers.

and another thing, leadership. If I'm voting on that committee, there was no greater leader than Todd Helton- academically -athletically -emotionally ,spiritually- queue The national anthem , please..🇺🇸 Edited by Runswithknife

I'm not joining the argument but something for both sides. I would say Todd Helton still remembers it very well but I'm sure he has received so many awards throughout his career that he would have a hard time taking you to it in his room full of trophies. I'm sure he would have loved to have won that game but he did win a state championship in baseball at Central. Helton did help the Vols a lot more in baseball than football and had a great career and will no doubt make the hall of fame. One of the big things that may have helped him win the Mr. Tennessee Football player of the year award over Summers was that he was on Tom Lemmings list of top QB's and was also a great safety at Central intercepting 23 passes during his career which is a lot. Sometimes when you have two great players like Summers and Helton and they both put up great numbers it seems that the press is always going to favor the QB over a RB. I think both of you guys have great points in your arguments but as things shook out this may be the reason why Helton won the awardf3gfap.jpg

You're dead right about Todd being a great Safety, Barn. Central had another Safety that year named Billy King. Hes still one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen in HS.

One thing we can agree on is that Todd Helton was one of the best athletes (not just football playeys) to ever come out of the state of Tennessee. Summers was a great back/LB too. Helton could have played running back- he could've played linebacker- he could've been a punter he could've been anything he wanted to do and that's the difference.

We do agree that Helton was a fantastic athlete. I'm not sure about the running back comment though. It's for sure there are two teams he couldn't have played running back for..........OR and Central. But I must agree that he's one of the top high school athletes to ever come out of Tennessee.

As a football player, I wasn't looking for an academic leader. Shawn didn't say much but his actions spoke louder than words. He was a very hard worker and a great competitor. I found myself not wanting to let him down.
