What is your definition of athlete in girls basketball?

Kellie Jolly from White Co could shot off the dribble and played on 3 Nat Championships for the Lady Vols . Also Ginger Jared from White Co who played for Vanderbilt . .

 

Jolly should be on any All Time Tennessee High Basketball team. She probably is the perfect Lady Vol. She has proven to be a triple basketball threat, outstanding player, a coaches dream to coach and able to pass along her abilities to today's athletes as a coach herself. Did I mention she has caused many of Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats players and fans to suddenly shoot up in bed, covered in sweat dreaming of Jolly raining down three balls in Sparta and Oak Ridge.

 

I'm going to get killed for this but Jolly was also very beautiful and her bother Brent was lit on fire on the court as well.

BUMP.... I have sort of taken over this tread and made it a trip down memory lane. I would love to read what other players have left an impression on Tennessee Girls Basketball fans.

 

I haven't spoke of Jennifer McGinnis of Oak Ridge and Duke University fame. She was a strong solid body who hustled all the time, fought for loose balls, rebounded with a passion and had a soft three point shot.

 

She was not recruited by Tennessee because Pat decided to go after Oneida's name is on the tip of my tongue but won't come out  lol.

 

Pat and OR coach Jill Prudden were friends but Pat let a slew of talented Lady Wildcats go. Only Caldwell got the Orange ticket to Knoxville. Caldwell was a great player and is doing a great job being one of Pat's former players turned coach. Most people don't know this but Pat did recruit a person from OR who turned her down. She offered Coach Prudden a job as a recruiter/coach for the Lady Vols. We held out breath hoping to keep our coach and she ended up staying at the high school level.

 

Still can't remember the Oneida girl's name. HELP. Starts with an L I think.

Interesting reading - Thanks from all those of us that love the girls game. Great memories of watching some of these ladies. I hope the Lady Vols can return to glory soon. Missing those days.

I'd also add Tiffany Krantz (Livingston Academy played with Sudae Watson) and Amy Geren ( only player to win MVP of state on losing team for Bradley against a loaded Shelbyville team ) she played with another great and your current lady Wildcat coaches Paige Redman Green

 

Amy Geren is not the only MVP on a losing team in the state Cship game. Diane Spivey of Jackson Co. was MVP in 1974.

She was on the 1973 team that was 36-0 State Champion and MVP in 1974 on the 33-3 State runner up. Jackson Co. lost to Trezevant that year.

Yes. You're correct. I always forget the 6 on 6 days. Totally different game then. A lot of holding the ball for half the game or more.

Just curious to know about people feelings towards "athletes" not just role players that are ok!

 

Since you asked...I think that your use of the word "athlete" was a poor choice. Several athletes are role players themselves, and some of the better players that I've ever had the pleasure to watch weren't overly blessed with athleticism. God given ability, work ethic, attitude, and pure competitive drive determine just how good players are...other than that, I'm not sure about the question.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! Athleticism has very little to do with success. It's the factors above that make a player "exceptional."

One of Pat's girls was a little ole gal from Giles County named Shelia Frost.She was 6'4" and deadly from 15' in. She was on one of Pat's first National Championship teams, if not the first, It sure was fun to watch her play. She played for Billy Mayfield, another excellent girls high school coach, in his day.
