INEPTITUDE OF TSSAA

In light of what happened at the Marshall Co. and Maplewood game the other night, I have to express my disdain for such a poorly run organization.  I understand that it was the officiating crew who was responsible for the call, but it ultimately lies on the TSSAA because they govern each association of officials.  I also understand that there is a shortage of officials, thus resulting in what some, if not most, may call terrible officiating across the state.  I'm aware that there are some outstanding crews, but it's not the norm.  This particular display of INEPTITUDE is only a fraction of the plethora of examples displayed by the governing body of TN High School Athletics.  It's a sad state of affairs from top to bottom.  Sadly, I'm 100% certain, that there were situations in West TN as well as East TN, that were as egregious as the one at Maplewood.  Will it ever get better?  No need to respond to the post as I am aware that similar things have been posted.  I am just another fan of high school football with no dog in this particular fight.  I am frustrated with the leadership within our own house.   It's a daily battle struggling with the soccer community, year round basketball, year round baseball, and the so called medical experts with an adverse agenda.  Whew.  My rant for the day.

Well I’m not going in to detail about what happened but it was definitely 2 major errors on the refs part- we have Kam getting to play which is all we wanted. But it would be nice if they admitted to their mistakes but at the end of the day it all worked out! Such a distraction for our coaches and players and totally unnecessary - but moving on we gotta get ready for a dog fight in the trenches! Here we go Tigers! 3 semifinals in a row! Let’s channel our emotions from all this chaos into positive vibes for us! Winners never cheat- cheaters never win!

I have a few friends who have been football officials in east TN for a number of years, and each of them do it because they love the game. Plain and simple. That said, many of these issues could be "fixed" if the pool of officials was larger, and the only way to fix that is to provide some additional financial incentive (which isn't going to happen). I think a lot more folks would be willing to take the abuse that these officials take (and even deal with more job performance scrutiny from TSSAA), but only if proper compensation were provided.

Generally speaking, I think most people are willing to put up with a certain level of crap, but that level of crap is proportional to the amount of compensation that they receive. The same argument can be made in most professions - If you want to improve your pool of candidates, and overall talent, you typically have to provide some extra compensation.

It' going to get to a point the refs are going to start kicking parents out like the little league games..

    • Harriman was better than what I anticipated. They had good skill guys and a QB that’s gonna make a lot of teams look silly. They had some silly pre snap penalties but it’s just spring and I guess that’s expected.    Oneida looks the part. They are big upfront and got a stable of backs that’s gonna carry them this year. They have a few playmakers at receiver also. They have a new receiver that has only played basketball till this year and he is very athletic. The question is can we find a QB to consistently get them the ball. They played 2-3 kids there and none looked great but they didn’t look awful either. The  defense is gonna be tough again but it’s very early and a lot can change between now and the fall.     It was good just to get out and watch some ball. I don’t know if Oneida has the team to win the region this year but just what I saw tonight I think they may be in the conversation come November.
