AAU clarification

Its actually not through the summer... HS coaches can coach any 8th grade student... once the 8th grader is no longer enrolled in 8th grade (graduate from middle school) then they cannot coach them.... because they have been promoted into the next grade which be high school 9th grade.....  There is one exception: if the school is one campus (6-12 or K-12) then the HS coach cannot coach 8th Graders in AAU because potentially an 8th grader could play on his HS team...

The rule of the 3 players on a team (or 60%) only applies in the fall.

If a high school coach (head or assistant) is coaching an 8th grade AAU team, once the school year ends they have to stop coaching them?  Even if the athletes do not enroll at the high school the coach works for?

Not if the players are not going into the school that the coach is currently at... no... Sorry for the confusion.

I thought they were okay until the day they walked into that school in August since they could theoretically attend another school.

The state needs to make zoning mandatory so that coaches know who is going to their school and then allow the high school coaches to work with the middle school coaches. It is the only answer.

Most are going to have tryouts for the following year before school is out.

    • Yes this process is moving slower than I would have expected
    • also was told coady auston applied, he served as defensive coordinator for greenfield under don pitt several years ago before going to Obion county
    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
