Kirby is the passing team. The Kirby HC, coach Flowers, is an ex-Whitehaven coach. I think he's an alum as well, I'm not certain. Anyway, when he was at the Haven he coaches WRs. Our WRs were top shelf under his tutalag. I've discovered he is also very adept at developing QBs.

As a result of having a strong passing game, his teams also usually have a RB that just shreds defenses. This year is no exception.

To boot, their defense is keeping folks out of the end zone, so far. They have a DE who is going to Ark State, but he turned down some SEC schools in the process. I think that was a smart move on his behalf.

Coach Flowers IS an alumnus of Whitehaven, he came out in '89 or '90.

The only problem with Kirby is the lack of competition. You have to schedule tough opponents if you want to make a deep run. Easy teams dont tell you what you need to work on. It's still impressive to have 3 shutouts but freaking play somebody!!

I think the issue we had over at Kirby was the lack of a big back to beat teams like Henry Co. in the playoffs. There are a couple of guys that he can put back there and play smash mouth football with if need be.

Well, there is plenty of time to have that discussion. The first test is this Friday against SW.

    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
