I agree Houston and Arlington should be at the top.  Who would be out of Middle TN AAA?  I know Siegel should be up there.  As for East TN right now in AAA, I would say Dobyns-Bennett, Oak Ridge, and Bearden from what I have seen so far.

If DB is there so is Science Hill .Play Bearden very tough. And so is Morristown East

Someone needs to investigate Houston because there is no way these “new recruits” are legal IMO.

Houston is part of the Germantown Municipal School District which started in 2014 when the state law was changed. All you have to do to be eligible is to move to Germantown. Fun fact, Germantown High School is not in the Germantown Municipal School District.

I like how you followed that up with IMO. Everyone on coacht.com knows your "opinion" about transfers in Shelby County. The thing is your "opinion" has no value whatsoever in this matter. The TSSAA has granted the eligible and that's it.

Houston was really good last year and had as good a chance as any to win it all.

Mason Miller, T.J Madlock, Zander Yates, Alden Applewhite, and Faizon Fields are all solid mid-major/major college players and had been there or transferred in a year or two before.  No one cared because they were young and kinda flew under the radar. Now not only do they still have Miller (Creighton), Madlock, and Yates, they have Ahmad Nowell (super high ranked freshman).

They added Colbert and Lawson to an already loaded team. They did lose Applewhite to a school in AZ.

My point is no one said anything last year but now, "They need to be investigated!" Give me a break.

As long as Mike Miller is the coach and he runs HoopsCity Houston will be a force.

It happens all over the state but Shelby County is singled out because 3/4 of the top talent in the state is here.

T$$AA grants eligibility based on the information they are provided at the time by the school.  This year Houston High added 6'10 Brock Vice from Virginia, 6'6 senior from Minnesota Cal Greene, and 6'7 J. Lawson from Memphis,  and a nationally ranked guard Ahmad Nowell from Philadelphia, and 6'10 J. Colbert from San Antonio Texas. These are just the transfers I know about this year.  Are you telling me all these nationally ranked players  from out of state moved to the Houston school district??

An out of state kid wouldn't have to move into Germantown. Inside the Germantown city limits is Houston's district but Germantown Municipal takes kids from outside the district. All they would have to do is move into the general area and apply for open enrollment.

https://www.gmsdk12.org/OpenEnrollment.aspx

This is applicable to Collierville, Bartlett, Germantown Municipal, and Arlington.

What will happen is that kids will flood from all over to play for Mike Miller and it is within all the legal boundaries the TSSAA and state of TN has set for student enrollment. Out of state is the simplest way to do it.

Then there is open enrollment in Shelby County for 8th grade students and choice transfers for 10,11,12 grade.

Schools in SC have zone boundaries and are required to take any students within those boundaries. 8th graders, however, can apply for optional programs or any high school they want as incoming freshman.

Alijah Curry is an example. 6'6 as an 8th grader and he was wanted by many coaches in the city. He played at Ridgeway Middle he now goes to East. There are at least 3 high schools (that I can think of Ridgeway HS, Overton HS, White Station HS) between Ridgeway Middle and East High. Who knows where that kid lives but he probably doesn't live in East's zone.

The link below shows where last years 8th graders went.

The class of 2024 is supposed to be really special in Memphis/Shelby Co.

Different coaches have different tricks to get kids in an eligible. If it worked in the past there then there is a good chance it will always work until the TSSAA passes new bylaws which we all know they are reluctant to do.

I'm not talking about the top 8th graders in the city and what high school they end up at.  I'm talking about a nationally ranked freshman from Philadelphia. I'm talking about the other transfers from out of state like Minnesota, Texas, and Virginia.  All these players are nationally ranked. So all these families sold there home and moved into the general area of Germantown?  This sounds more like College basketball to me?  Do you guys have dorms?

The reason I say it is because T$$AA has allowed Shelby County schools to have an unfair advantage and now that Shelby County schools aren’t playing basketball all of a sudden these kids start transferring to other schools. Like I said if there is a legitimate change of address as required by T$$AA then I have no qualms. However Lawson has played for 3 different high schools that I know of and at every turn I hear “excuses” as to why he’s somewhere else. So all I’m saying is show proof of an actual address change meaning there cannot even be an electric bill at the old house or he’s disqualified. To say a high school in Germantown Tn is bringing in kids from all over the country and it’s not recruiting?  Highly unlikely, unless Houston all of a sudden became Div II then all is fair!  So are they Div II now?  No they aren’t so like I said if I was coaching in this district I’d absolutely be finding out if these kids were legal.  If they are then you should welcome any inquiry into this situation however it’s been my experience when people get all mad and upset and start putting down people for “asking” how all these great athletes suddenly show up at Houston High, they are usually guilty. IMO

Great point. Who are these kids living with/at?  With a friend of a friend? At a coaches house?  Great Uncle Bobs? Grandmama’s on their 2nd cousins side from their brothers wife’s step dad?  Asking for a friend...

For the TSSAA to find them eligible they have shown proof.

I have an idea since the majority of your posts are ranting about this.

Come to Shelby County and check all these eligibility requirements for yourself. Then you can report it to the TSSAA.

These great athletes are suddenly showing up at Houston High School because Mike Miller is the coach. Isn't that obvious? Can you not see that? Miller has Hoops City AAU as his advantage. If Miller was at Kirby, Collierville, Mitchell, Melrose he'd get the same kids. His advantage now is that out of state kids don't have to live in Germantown. They can just move into the commuting area and apply as a student in the district. Germantown is pretty expensive. The cheapest house right now is $220,000. But that doesn't matter with the rules the way they are.

I'm sure some coaches are really upset. I bet Southwind is livid. They used to be the school that pulled the talent from the area but he won't be able to touch what Miller can do.

Wanna blame somebody? Blame the TSSAA and the State Department of Education. Everything that is happening is well with in the rules that they set.

As long as winning the the top priority in high school athletics then this is what's gonna happen. The NFHS sold basketball out a long time ago to the shoe companies and with that the AAU and it's culture took hold.

Contact the TSSAA, start a petition, call your local representative. It is what it is and no amount of moaning and crying is gonna change it.

One trick is to say that a kid is following "XYZ path" to graduation and his zoned school doesn't offer the classes for that. But magically the new school offers all the elective/major classes for that.

Who is going to stop a kid from pursuing his dream of becoming a chef, police officer, mechanic, airplane mechanic, contractor, and numerous other programs that schools might or might not offer? Just so happens this student just happens to be good at basketball or football.

(baseball doesn't matter much in SC because CBHS, MUS, Collierville, Arlington, Houston, or Bartlett are getting those players when they're freshman anyway)

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
