Raleigh-Egypt @ Covington Round 1

Raleigh-Egypt will visit Covington in the first round of the playoffs. Covington will have Senior Night because the last home game with Dyer County was cancelled due to weather and to DC’s unwillingness to cooperate in rescheduling that game. Our seniors deserve a chance to be recognized for putting in 4 years at our school.

According to both Sonny-Moore and Cal-preps, this game is a mis-match. Both sources predict a Covington win by more than 40 points. Still, the “second season” is just that. It’s a chance for teams to accomplish things they didn’t get done in the regular season. All I want is for the Chargers to play to our abilities, and to remember the motto for the playoffs “Win or go home”.

I'm wishing the Chargers an undefeated second season.

Go Chargers!

Covington secures home playoff game with rout of Bolton

A cold, wet, windy night did not deter the Chargers Friday as the offense heated up and burned the Bolton Wildcats for a 55-6 region win that secured second place in the playoffs.

Despite the lopsided score, the night was not all peaches and cream. Covington (7-2 overall, 4-1 Region 8-3A) seemed to be a bit off plumb all night.

Jamarion Dowell put CHS on top with a 75-yard scoring run on the second snap from scrimmage. But prior to that the opening kickoff was fumbled and an illegal shift was called on the first play, one of nine Covington penalties for 75 yards.

“We weren’t in focus,” said head coach J.R. Kirby. “We had a good week in practice and then played poorly in a number of areas. The team heard about it at halftime. Poor tackling on the left side allowed Bolton to gain too much ground.”

The Wildcats picked up 113 on 26 carries but were 0 for 17 in the passing game.

CHS added to the lead in the first quarter on a 31-yard scoring pass from Tanner Stewart to Jalen Fayne, who was a Wildcat killer. He gained 52 yards on four carries and scored and scored on runs of 33 and 18 yards. Fayne also came up with a 50-yard pick-6 in the second quarter for good measure.

Dowell got seven touches for 154 yards and two scores, the second a 64-yard run in the third period. Kirby added more punch in the backfield, giving Robert Dohnken (15 carries/ 66 yards and two TDs and Eumorrion Flowers (10 carries/87 yards) some needed reps. Braden Gover got a few snaps at QB and chipped in 49 yards on three carries.

The second season begins Friday night at Covington Athletic Field at 7 p.m. The opponent is the number three seed from Region 8, the Raleigh-Egypt Pharaohs (5-4).

“Raleigh-Egypt is big and fast,’ Kirby said. “They have two good running backs. They will bring it and play hard.”
