Memphis East beats Raleigh Egypt to complete the bracket.

And I agree that 7-3A sweeps 8-3A

With all this talk about 7-3A sweeping 8-3A it makes me realize how lucky we (7-3A)  are that Shelby County has so many high schools. Because let's be honest if Shelby Co had all there talent condensed into one, two or even three different schools like most counties do they would probably take the Gold Ball to Shelby County every year. Probably wouldn't have to worry about that in 3A but whatever class that would be would dominate. JMO!!

If they had the missing pieces such as support, resources, coaching, they could do it now. There is so much talent there.

But, if they only had two or three schools, they would be so large that they would be in 6A. And, if Memphis did that, so would Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga.

I think that some of the 3A schools in Memphis now have the talent to be really good if they had booster groups to provide extra funding, weight training facilities and year-round coaching staffs to man them, etc.

Logistically, it would be a huge problem to consolidate to 2 or 3 public high schools in Memphis. The closest we actually see to what you describe is the largest private schools in these cites. Schools like MUS, Ensworth, Lipscomb Academy, etc. can recruit and pull together the “best” athletic talent in a city. That’s why the TSSAA was forced to break out the privates into separate classifications. Letting them “cherry pick” the best talent in Memphis, provide these players with scholarships, etc., gave them a totally unfair advantage over public schools.

Now that the brackets are set, let’s look at Massey’s prediction for each of the four games between 7-3A and 8-3A:

Memphis East @ Dyersburg - Dyersburg wins 41-6

Hamilton @ Covington - Covington wins 42-6

Westview @ Bolton - Westview wins 42-12

Ripley @ Sheffield - Ripley wins 35-21

The Massey predictions are solidly in favor of a sweep by Region 7-3A. That agrees with my gut feel, but we will see how the actual games turn out. If the sweep does happen, then week 2 will find Dyersburg hosting Westview and Covington hosting Ripley.

This should hold true. Region 7 typically sweeps Region 8, but Sheffield is going to be a big problem for Ripley! Won't be surprised at all if Sheffield gets it done.

It’s all going to come down to Ripley’s pass defense against Radarious Jackson. If they cannot contain the Mr. Football Semifinalist the game will get away from them. Two weeks ago I would’ve bet a nickel on a 7-3A sweep but after seeing Ripley’s pass defense in person this is the only game of the night that I can see 8-3A getting the dub.

Well, if Covington wins tonight, the outcome of Ripley @ Sheffield is important to us.

A Ripley win would have them them playing at Covington next week.

But, on the other hand, if Sheffield wins, we would have to travel to their place and there would be a matchup of MR. football candidates Radarious Jackson and Skylan Smith. That would be of interest.

Totally agree with that but my gut is telling me that Ripley will do enough to get the Chargers at home next week.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
