Why would George Quarles want to coach at a place with the program trending downward like Maryville ?

There is the question right there folks.  There is only one job in Blount County that George Quarles would ever be a serious applicant to apply for in 2023 and it isn't Maryville.  If Coach Nix were to leave Alcoa then I could definitely see Coach Quarles as the Tornadoes next football coach.  That would only be if it happened in the not too distant future.

Maryville isn't considered the statewide "super power" that they were once upon a time....

Maryville in the late 90s and 00s was a force when they were in 4A beating up on Morristown West & Co.  I was lucky enough to see them play Whites Creek (1998), Maplewood (2007), Hillsboro (2001, 2002, 2006, 2008), Melrose (2004 and 2005) when they were seemingly invincible during that time.

Maryville was the "5 Class System 4A" powerhouse from 1998-2008 that Alcoa eventually became in the "5 Class System 2A" from 2004-2008 and has continued to be in the "6 Class System 3A" since 2009 (minus hiccups in 2011 and 2012 to CAK).

It makes some of the Maryville posters upset when I post this on here but since 2009 when they elected to play up to the "6 Class System 6A" they've had some great teams, won several championships (6), but in the end they haven't had nearly that same aura.

No current football player at Maryville high school has ever played in a state championship game (2020-2023).  That doesn't make them "failures" by any stretch of the imagination.  They had very productive high school playing careers and will go on to do great things in their lives to come.

Coach Quarles saw this writing on the wall when he saw the emergence of Oakland when Coach Creasy came to Murfreesboro.  Signs of it had shown in meetings with Alcoa and Ravenwood but when it started happening versus Oakland it was just plain different because it was the barrier that prevented Maryville from reaching the pinnacle and playing in the state championship games as they had done so many times earlier.

The school board has been to busy dealing with Karen and the Library Book this week. Somebody should take it and throw it at her.

We are down a calculus teacher and now folks wanna throw books away. It would be difficult to not offend Karen b4 that conversation was over.

Keep telling yourself that.  Alcoa WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!  Who cares about the county?!?!?

Winning the county gets you a t-shirt.

Winning the state championship AGAIN gets you some hardware and it means that you didn't have to buy tickets to get on the field to see the games.

It also means that you didn't have to create t-shirts to feel better about your life.

If any chance in the world GQ went to Alcoa the very first thing he would do is jump to 5A. He absolutly would get nothing out of beating up on a bunch of corn dogs from Lizard Licks. That is a good Thanksgiving story though. Hopefully Coach Nix will be around for a long time, forget the loss to Maryville , he's doing a great job.

    • The golf preseason came to a close Friday at Indian Hills as the I-24 Invitational hosted by Rockvale was contested. Webb School won the title by 13 shots 295-308 over Rockvale. Rockvale girls won the title by five shots over Providence  Christian 155-`160 after the Lions won the 1913 Invitational at Johnson City by 10 shots over Greeneville. The course was wet and muddy in the morning but the rain finally broke and some good scores were had. The Webb School boys had Phet Phothong score a 69 while Carter  Burks shot 70 following up his 72 in Johnson City on Monday. The girls had Solia Mechling of Rockvale lead the way with a 73 in taking the title as they improved their score by 30 shots over Monday in East Tennessee as they found the homestead Indian Hills to their liking.  Rockvale and Central Magnet will head to the Battle of Hermitage on Wednesday July 31st. On Tuesday Stewarts Creek and Smyrna will do battle at Smyrna Golf Course  with an early tee time of 11 AM. The next day Oakland, Webb and Nolensville will tee off at Champions Run beginning at 9 AM. Eagleville will open on July 29th heading to Lawrenceburg and the Country Club awaiting host Lawrence County and several other teams to tee up the regular season. The season will end in October at Sevierville when state champions will be crowned.
