Lakeway Christian Seeking 6th HC

The dumpster Fire known as Lakeway Christian will be looking for it's 6th head coach in just a few years open. I'm guessing they look for an out of town guy because no one local wants this job. Good facilities, However they are not getting any quality kids to work with in Jeff or Mo town. They are also seeking a New coach at the sister school Tri Cities Christian. Working with the Bob's and Kevin Klein are as hard as working as a head coach with no talent. Money or facilities are not worth it!

Troy Felming

Bruce Fowler

Jermel Jones

Steve Haywood

Troy Fleming was never a HC at LCA.

Bruce Fowler was retired, and was only going to start football.

Jermel Jones returned to Florida.

Haywood returned to CPA to join athletic staff and be associate HC at the most successful program in TN over last 10 years.

Wells was at LCA for 3 years and ultimately didn’t get job done.

LCA hasn’t recruited like many schools do, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s following the rules.

They’ve doubled student population.

Athletically they’ve won 2 team state in wrestling, district champions in XC and volleyball this fall. Not to mention winning championships in track, state tournament appearances in softball. They have original coaches in golf, boys basketball, baseball, softball, and wrestling. Very little turnover in all other sports.

I formally worked at LCA, not any better person or leader than Kevin Cline (you misspelled his name). The Bobs are humble folks who have sacrificed a great deal for Christian education.

Sure they’ve had some tough luck with football, but your insults are unwarranted nor accurate.

What FootballFan007 refers to as a Lakeway dumpster fire was actually several brief hires and 1 intentional controlled burn.

Over 4 years, Lakeway hired several  good men with deep football pedigrees. They hired men to advise, to coach, and to assist Lakeway in creating a high school football program from scratch. Each man accepted the challenge for a brief time.

Yes,  the compensation and the facilities were more than adequate, and you are correct, the initial coaches were not handed “talent”.  None of the first  “hires” chose stay long enough to develop the talent necessary to accomplish the ultimate goal.   Each man left on his own volition to pursue what appears to me to be less daunting tasks.  As a side note: only one of these early contributors is actually coaching Tennessee high school football today.

In 2022 Lakeway was still in need of a coach capable of leading and developing a new football program. Lakeway hired a coach with multiple high school head coaching experiences.  However his head coaching resume reveals an “itinerant” pattern.  Lakeway was his 5th head coaching job in ten years. In hindsight, short coaching stints at multiple schools do not require or allow a coach to grow and develop his own players.  His winning record reflects the development of athletes  by other coaches.

Player attraction, retention, and development are critical coaching skills for every football program, but  especially critical in a fledgling program like Lakeway.  That skill will be an important trait to look for in Lakeway’s future head coach.  Thus in 2024, we have our first fire, but the fire was a “controlled” burn, not a dumpster fire. A controlled fire is considered good management.

Lakeway never was, and is not today, an opportunity for a coach still cutting his teeth in the high school football universe.  Likewise Lakeway is not an opportunity for someone looking for his dream job.  Lakeway is a opportunity for a good Christian man who has a solid high school coaching resume and the ability to attract players with his personality or his  reputation.  That coach will be handed the keys to build “his” dream football program with the best high school football resources available in East Tennessee.

As for the Bob’s and Dr Cline that you disparaged, their other hires have exceeded expectations in both  academic and non-academic activities including: wrestling, volleyball, baseball, golf, basketball, soccer, band, theatre, and cheerleading.    Lakeway Christian Academy students are blessed to have the Bob’s and Dr. Cline shaking the high school coaching tree, looking for that exceptional  “guy” who is up to the challenge!

If you are that guy, know this: Lakeway is  a wonderful school that will support a coach 100% and provide him with young men of character, young men who are willing to do the work necessary to become elite athletes, young men who want to establish along with him an excellent football program resulting in a winning football tradition.

who would want this job???  tough tough division if you don’t recruit in kids well…. morristown is a great place but really why would somebody new and fresh want to move there???  think that’s going to be a tough job to get somebody to love until you get a morristown guy hire who is ready to build a winning culture….

They'll get someone who's desperate wants to get back to East Tennessee......

I do hope they make a good hire. Hopefully, a young guy that's full of passion and ready to stay in one place and build something.

Lakeway is actually located a stone’s throw from I-81 exit 4 in Jefferson County, near Hamblen and Sevier Counties, and within the commuting  range of Knox County and Grainger County.  You are correct, a coach with “roots”  in the area and an attractive coaching reputation could fall in love with the potential for developing a winning football program in a division underrepresented in East Tennessee.  Go Lions!

Every high school around has those lights and turf. Indoor is used for baseball and softball. The weight room is on par with every high school around, the soccer field is 20 yards short so you can’t play big games on it. Also the coach’s have to raise money for the program so what’s different than a public school. The school athletics is ran like a public school model.

Not sure who you are, but when you click your profile all of your most recent comments are you tearing down another program or person.

The most recent programs include:

1. Concord

2. Alcoa

3. Bearden

4. Catholic

5. Grace

6. Maryville

Looks like Lakeway is in good company. Hope you find a resolution to your disappointment or discontent. Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Looks like our first three games will be some tough competition. We are predicted to win against 1A Chattanooga prep and expected to lose the next two games against 5A East Hamilton and 2A York Institute. I've looked at Yorks schedule and they will have had the hardest schedule I've seen in a while for a 2A team. They will either be battle tested end of season or playing the water boys due to everyone being hurt.  The Chattanooga Prep team played Boyd Buchanan much closer than I would have thought on last years schedule, so I expect that to be a hard game for us as well if we can pull it out.  These predictions are Massey's and not mine just a fyi.
    • Age wise correct! His som  will play somewhere small and maybe he will just wanna be a dad!Caine puts in more time than mist may wanna re charge for few years!
    • I think you are right on the money with these predictions.  You seem well versed in West TN high school football.  I’d like to hear your predictions and thoughts for 1A region 6 if you would be willing.
    • I have heard another one after that is possible.  Still though it’s hard to see any school system justify spending money on a field upgrade for an existing school while building a new school. Going to turf and the stadium upgrade would be a large investment. I looked it up and turf starts at 250K and up.
    • 1 new HS schefuled in 3-4 years. On the White County side of Cookeville. It will essentially split the Cookeville HS school population from 2200 to two schools of 1100. Probably like two 1250 by the time they build it.
