MUS had Paul Skeeter Gowan and his son who played there about 4 years ago and I believe he plays for an ivey league school now...he was a runningback.

Sequatchie County-Josh Cain, linebacker, 97-98. four year starter, 3 year All-State, 425 bench in HS, tristate leader in tackles as sophomore, among leaders last 2 seasons. Led Tennessee team in tackles in 98 Tennessee-Kentucky all-star game, teammates included John Henderson, I'm assuming Auburn linebacker Mark Brown played too. I think that was a sign to 1A coaches they'd made a mistake overlooking him. Two time I-AA All-American, 30 tackles in one game as a college junior (in a loss!), led all divisions of college football in season tackles as a college senior (on a 2-10 team where he was doubleteamed on most plays), 39 reps of 225 in bench (and yes I know there's other lifts).

Antoine Scott is one of the best to come out briarcrest as well as Justin Currie will be the same.

In the modern era of football, I have a tie for the greatest player ever at Sevier County. Jason Layman(UT and Tennessee Titans)or James Bates(U of Florida). Jason graduated in 1991 and was on everybody's All-American team, and went on to be a All SEC offensive tackle for UT, then being drafted by the Oilers/Titans in the second round. Definitely the best lineman I've ever seen in high school. The very next season, James (LB-TE) made several All-American teams as well. At 6'2" 210 linebacker, he chose Florida over UT,Texas,UCLA, and Michigan, and later became a starter for the Gators and has 4 SEC and 1 National Championship ring for his services. Both of these guys had the ability to take over games and was definitely always the best player on the field while they played.

At Brentwood it had to be Bill Whittemore, currently starting QB for Kansas. 5A Mr. Football, 3,345 yards passing Sr. year, 444 yards passing in one game re: Gallatin, longest pass 99 yards, probably passed for close to 9,000 career yards plus gained a ton on scrambles. Class of '99.

Clay Whitehurst (four-year letterman at Alabama) from the early 1980s should probably get some votes, too, at Brentwood High. His talent was overshadowed by the fact that those first few Brentwood teams were not that good.

I remember going to an MBA versus Hunters Lane game in the early 90s when Hunters Lane had a kid named Reggies Grimes. He played tailback and linebacker and was enormous. He went on to start at DT for the Crimson Tide.

Tommy Phillips was the greatest player at Centennial. Of course i could be a little bias.LOL

 

Another player from Centennial who was good besides Barry and Tommy was their middle linebacker. He was tough as nails. I think his last name was Bates.

 

My brother said that running back Centennial had that got hurt Tommy's senior year was a freak of nature. I used to know his name but My brother said that kid was good for 2 tds a game.

Skeeter Gowan was probably the most popular player ever to play at CBHS. He was considered a legend. The best was probably Paul Hofer who was ineligible his senior year because of age. He later played at Ole Miss and San Francisco where he was very popular. As for Gowan, his son Kyle played at MUS where he holds most of their rushing records despite an injury filled career. He attends SMU where he is a student on an accademic scholarship. He had offers to play in college but chose not to.

Oh, and just to solidfy what you said, Franklin still has a game tape of when he played them. I checked it out today and he was very good!

well in my oppinion the best player to ever come out of smyrna high school would have to be luke powell. he played wide reciever and punt returner for stanford this year. in 2000 he was named an all- american. smyrna also had other great players just none of them went to college. so in my oppinion luke powell is the best player every to come out of smyrna high school thta went to college.
