Zhar if you count state championships before the implementation of the play-off system in 1969, then Maryville has the same number of championships that Oak Ridge has. Maryville was AP state champs in the final poll of 1964. There were several polls then (AP, UPI, Litkenhous etc.). Maryville played a bowl game 3 weeks after the end of the season and lost to Knox Young. There were no polls taken after post season games or bowl games, similar to college football back then. Go Rebs.

My two cents for East Tenn rivalries:

 

Oak Ridge vs Kingsport DB......since 1961....5A Playoff Match ups, two long time powers, best in East Tenn in 5A...

 

Oak Ridge vs Clinton.....mostly in OR favor, but Dragons play hard every year

 

Oak Ridge vs Farragut....at its peak in late 70s, early 80s, Wildcats have upper hand

 

Oak Ridge vs Anderson County...could have been, but Mavs bailed out after they got their first win last year....

 

Others:

 

Alcoa vs Maryville........a classic, one of the best, Rebels have upper hand lately

 

McMinn County vs Cleveland.....Cherokees relish any win here

 

Farragut vs Bearden.....Bulldogs stole some key wins lately

 

Coalfeild vs Oliver Springs.....a classic, even the fights

 

Lenoir City vs Loudon.....this one usually goes to the Redskins

 

Kingston vs Rockwood and Harriman.....Jackets win out most of the time...

 

Gallatin vs Riverdale....Green Wave needs a comeback in this one

 

Oakland vs Riverdale......goes back and forth, who has the best of Murfreesboro

 

New Rivalries:

 

Knox Central vs Maryville.....Bobcats may get them this year

 

Morristown West vs Maryville......another one itching for the Rebels

 

Clinton vs Anderson County.....Mavs have control of late

 

Austin East vs Fulton.....early game for drivers seat.....

 

I'll think about it some more, I have seen a lot of these and they are great games!!

I'm a little suprised at the Gallatin-Riverdale one.

 

The two schools have actually only met eight times, with RHS winning 5, GHS 3. And most of the games have not been close. In '93 the score was 6-0 in favor of RHS, but other than that they have been lop-sided by whomever won.
