In a very exciting match at William Blount HS, the Seymour Middle School Eagles defeated Cleveland Middle School to win the 2004 Tennessee AAU Middle School Dual State Title. The final score, I believe, was 46 to 33.

Congrats to the Eagles and Coaches Rusty McCroskey and Don Barnett for a job well done!

Congrats to Marty Carpenter and the Blount County Wrestling Club for an outstanding and well run tournament.

Congrats to William Blount. Didn't hear much about the "state" tournament in middle tennessee. I know Cleveland has a quality program because they came to our area. Grassland was the only team to beat them at the MBA middle school duals. I'd like to see state wide middle school competition but with Chatt not really starting until after the high school season is over (?), a very tough middle tn conference finishing in early Dec, and another in early Jan it looks tough to schedule.

Hey downforthecount,

This was the first year for this event. We would love to have teams from all regions of the state come and wrestle in it. It will only improve the quality of wrestling in Tennessee.

This was the first year for Middle School Duals in our area (Metro Knoxville Area) and it has been a big success. Next years event will be even better and everyone is invited to compete!

Did Grassland or Nashville Catholic attend? They were clearly the two best teams in Middle Tennessee but due to the fact that the HVAC Conference Tournament (Grassland) being in early Dec. and the MTWA (Nashville Catholic) starting in late Nov. they never had the opportunity to wrestle.

Coach Carpenter did run a good tournament as host. This was an event that allowed several kids to compete and challenge for a state title. It was apparent that all wrestlers fought with all their might and the best team came out on top. The Seymour Eagles prevailed on this occasion and are the 2004 AAU Middle School State Champs--Congrads.

Only thing to improve on is having refs and assit. during the finals matchs, but the ones who did this years event were capable of doing a good job. To those refs keep up the good work.

Also maybe in the future get the word out sooner on the location and date for this event to be held for more teams to come and compete.

If it hurts----they will turn over!!!!!!!!!!

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
