Memphis has a concentration of recruiting problems for at least two reasons: (1) with a relatively open zoning policy (it is actually a fallacy, to some extent, to think that a zone is either on/off open/closed), moves within the system don't set off red flags to the extent they might elsewhere; and (2) the city produces a lot of serious talent in a popular sport (boys basketball).

Not to say there are no problems elsewhere, but the Bluff City does top this chart.

No Ela...we "all" didn`t make a big deal out of BA. If you recall BA was not that big of a deal in the first place. They sent letters to some kids who had already paid a deposit to attend the school. Give me a break! Only sore losers would make a big deal out of this. Then a middle school coach who was instructed not to bring anyone with who could be involved with BA in the future didn`t follow his instructions. The whole BA case was blown way out of proportions by sore losers who just didn`t like BA. It`s as simple as that. I`m glad BA has won in court thus far. In fact you yourself even say that it`s ok for a kid  or family to initiate contact with a school.  It seems to me that the kids that got letters initiated contact by signing contracts.

BA benefits from having a great coach and great program. It just ticked some coaches off. That`s the nuts and bolts of the whole thing.

VolGen, an ideal explanation of the issues at Brentwood Academy. Winning produces curiosity, and it is a compliment to the excellence of BA's faculty and coaches that BA's athletics have been so successful that others wonder if there are other factors involved. What the state doesn't know is that other areas of the school have also acheived phenomenal success quite atypical of what a small, young private school could normally accomplish. Examples include:

-A school singing group (Academy Singers) that has been named one of the top 25 in the world the past 2 years as decided by the Best of High School A Capella Competition and CD

-One of the top 15 Speech and Debate programs in the nation for 2 years running (Schwan's School of Excellence awards at the National Forensics Tournament), with a National Championship in one category and multiple Semifinalists (top 12) and Quarterfinalists (top 24) since 1997.

-Impeccable musicals and plays (2 per year) often compared to college productions.

-Two students who scored 1600s on the SAT -- in the same summer. Both also play in the school rock band.

-Graduates this year who will be attending, among others, Harvard, Princeton, West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and UT (sorry, had to throw that last one in there!).

-Other fine sports teams, such as back-to-back DII championships in Basketball and a championship in Track & Field, with another possibly on the way. In fact, BA has more state titles in Track (12) than any other sport, even football (9).

-An active Spiritual Life program, with almost three quarters of all students attending fall and spring retreats, and every student participating in service projects.

-A janitor-free school building where students take 15 minutes out of each day to clean the halls, classrooms, bathrooms, dining hall, etc.

-Lockers without locks or doors.

Taking these facts into account, it is easy to put the football success into perspective. While BA has fielded the most successful football team in the TSSAA's "modern" era, its prestige is merely on par with the excellence required and achieved in other areas of the school. BA is best known -- and, perhaps, most disliked -- for its success on the gridiron. But there is a whole lot more to the overachieving school on Granny White Pike that makes the Gold Balls (and, unfortunately, lots of silver ones) a lot easier to understand.

Sounds like a proud alumni doesn't it.

Memphis, Smephis, BA, DA..........or any Academy..........They ALL recruit and publics are indeed worse than most of the Privates.

Here is Knoxvegas, recruiting is rampant among Publics. Depends on what you call recruiting.

Most of it is done by parents, who get good athletes to join them at their school of choice based usually on good coaches and a WINNING program. The latter is the critical component.

This is usually a result of these athletes playing on travel teams together. It is done in ALL sports, male and female.

Now comes the rough part. How do they get to their school of choice. Do the move, trasfer or what?? If you live in Knox Co. you must move(UNLESS you are a minority) because it is Zoned Co. that does enforce it?? The surrounding counties, (Blount and Anderson for example) can accept "outsiders" for a Fee?

How much that is, depends. But it is legal?

So, if you see GOOD athletes going to schools in other districts from where they live.........you can bet your sweet "bippey" they were recruited. But, was it the coach or parents or team members or all the above. And HOW did they end up in the school of choice = did the move, get a scholarship or cheat??

I inserted a lot of ??? here, more than willing to be corrected or given the exact numbers but, this is the way I interrupt the recruiting in Knoxvegas!! :justwrestle:

Blount County Schools (Heritage and William Blount) are also zoned schools. You

must be referring to Maryville and Alcoa when you talk about Blount County

schools allowing students to come from "outside" the area and pay tuition. Both

Maryville and Alcoa accept tuition students.
