Maryville vs Melrose

Can anyone tell me why Melrose does not consistently put up big points like Maryville has this year?  I mean Maryville has put up 30 or more in 12 of its 14 while Melrose has done this only 5 times.  JW?

sharpshooter1278 that's a good question. Mainly ... the Melrose defense has been the constant. The Melrose offense has been inconsistant. When the offense is in a ryhtym. They score. When they self implode ... they don't score. When the game is on the line and they need to score ... they always do. This is a young team actually. It's comprised mostly of sophmores and juniors. There are 15 seniors on the team ... but I don't think all of the seniors start. Example ... #3, the 2nd string RB ... he's a senior. He's in the game on a regular basis because Melrose uses a lot of different personel for different offensive packages ... and he gives Cooper a breather every now and then. Their offense can be dominant, but they also make the mistakes that a young team will do from time to time. The QB is a sophmore ... give him some more time to mature and their offensive production will be better next year. Their D, on the other hand, is anchored by the senior MLB, 'baby Ray' ... who leads by example and the 'D' follows suit. He's consistant and so the 'D' is consistant.

Yes he is Dmoyers1, but if I interpreted the article I read in the paper correctly ... his coach is under the impression that a lot of big named schools think he's undersized @ 6'-0", 215 lbs. I hear South Carolina, University of Memphis and one other school, I think it's Louiville are interested in him. I think coach Ingram wants some other big schools to come take a look at him though. I don't think UT is interested. South Carolina was pre-Spurrier though ... I have no idea if they are still recruiting him now.

Hey, he could play at UT at 6 ft. Getting his frame to 225 would be no problem. He would be a terrific fit at Memphis, Louisville, Marshall, Tulane, La Tech, Al Birmingham, MTSU, Kentucky or Vandy, just the way he stands right this second. He's probably start at any of them , with his reported skills AND size....

I agree, he could go to a big school and add some lbs if need be. Heck ... he's taller then current UT, LB, Burnett and former UT, OLB, Raynock Thompson now! LOL!

I have to admit ... just looking at him ... one will not be overly impressed. When you see him play ... he's not going to stand out to the casual observer. Next thing you know ... everytime you see the ball ... you #52 somewhere in the vicinity. It's like they cloned him! LOLOL! Anyway ... keep ya eye on him during the game, if you can ... I know, I know, I know .... He'll be on the field the same time Cade is... LOL! ... it should be fun to watch!

Sounds like a tough dude...kinda like Ray Lewis...not the biggest (and if you saw him on the street) not the most stand-outish kinda guy.  But put pads on him and he's a beast.

That's kinda like our two DE's....their taller though.

How tall are those DE's Rebelyell? With the Melrose QB being 5'-8" tall (I'm being generous), I'm thinkin' ... they may atually swallow him whole! ... LOLOL!

I'm not joking ... when you guys see him walk out on the field ... you are gonna say to yourselves ... ok ... that's funny ... now where's the real QB? LOLOL!

One thing that I've not heard anyone point out yet is that an offense already prone to making mistakes is more likely to do so when confronted with a good defense. It seems like some Melrose fans are taking consolation in the fact that their offense has hurt itself over the course of the season. And to an extent I can see that it might be comforting to say "hey, we've won all our games even though the offense has made mistakes." But at the same time, moving forward those tendencies seem to me to be more of a liability than an asset. Maryville's D will capitalize on any mistakes that its opponent makes. Also, when faced with a good defense an inconsistent offense tends to be more likely to perform below average than above average. So, some credit for the offense's struggles must be given to the opponents (there had to be some reason for a guy to hold or for a turnover to occur, etc) and Maryville will create these types of situations in my opinion.

Very good observation papa. That's one area of concern for Melrose ... no doubt. However, Melrose's last three games where a whole lot better. You could tell by watching them play ... especially the last game, that they had put forth the work to correct some of the problems that had plagued their offense. White House came in with a very good, disciplined defense and Melrose played error free football for the most part. Maryville will capitalize on Melrose mistakes, no doubt. I feel confident in the progress they have shown over the past 3 weeks of play though.

I think that with all the posts so far ive come to the conclusion that: Melrose's defense is good, but Maybe not up to par with Maryville's offense, Melrose's offense is more mediocre and they usually dont score when they shoot themselves in the foot, which is typical with every offense in America, but the offense isnt good enough to overtake Maryville's defense. Special teams is extremely lopsided in favor of Maryville from what i hear from my football friends who have watched film. i think Maryville will be able to shut down their offense for the most part, they may break a big play here and there but Maryville usually finds a way to keep them out of the endzone. The Maryville offense is another story. Most of you think Melrose's D can handle them, but i dont think Cade Thompson is going to be denied a State Championship. He is going to come out there with an A+ game and i think that will overtake their D. Rebels by 10 points or more

Hey, that's what helped hillsboro. Usins up in the stands could see their QB, but our defensive linemen couldn't until he'd had time to slap hands with everyone on thhis line, plus their coaches and their backs...it was kinda comical for ahwile.

Ok...who are you and what did you do with Raider?@!! <_<

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
