DrCross is jealous of Doc's success and wants to put a damper on it. Doc has been at MLK since the school opened if i am not mistaken and has bult it from the ground up. Won a State tourney within two years of the school opening(1991 A State Champions). Not only is there only a certain number of spots in the lottery o see who gets in there is also a certain quota they must meet to diversify the school. So Cross not ny can get in even if they have the test schools. Like was said earlier if Einstein wanted in, and his number wasn't drawn he is out of luck. Just accept it. It is not like Doc gets the best basketball players in Nashville. He doesn't have big time recruits. His last Division I prospect was Nikki Arrinze to Wake Forest in 1996, if I am not mistaken. So Doc gets the most out of whatever is given to him. It helps when the students average ACT score is probably a 25 or 26.

Actually, GB, the quota ended a couple of years ago when busing was stopped. It was probably still in force when you were there, but when my daughters got in it had been abolished. Now it is all about the grades and the luck of the draw.

The only busing we had was the public transit system, you had to find your own way to get to school and to get home. Do they not evaluate test scores even more or has admission their become that lax. MLK players are evry successful after leaving Doc's program, I would bet that their team has the highest GPA of any team at the State Tourney. This young men not only excell on the hardwood but inside the classroom. Something you don't hear enough about on here.

They still have to ride public transportation. I just meant that when the courts ended school busing, that made the quota system for magnet schools illegal also. It all fell under the same court order. I'm not sure how this has affected the minority percentages at MLK. I do know that most years chairs sat empty that were reserved for minority students. Now all the seats can be filled by whoever is qualified and is selected by lottery.

I don't think admissions have become any more lax. Kids still must have a 3.0 average plus score a 17 on the math and reading sections of their TCAP. I know of one child who had an A average but could never quite get that 17 score and therefore is now at a regular public high school.

I just think MLK proves all those people wrong who say that a school with high academic standards cannot be successful athletically. It can be done.

By the way . . . Homestar Runner AND Stewie! Brilliant!

Doc has not been at MLK since it opened. He was an assistant at Maplewood when it opened. Milton Harris was the first coach at MLK. Then moved on to Pearl Cohn and eventually McGavock.

As good as doc is, he could be better. Doc is a great defensive coach, but not an all around great coach. I admire doc and what he has accomplished, but the guy needs to put a little emphasis on offense. Yes the saying is "offense wins games and defense wins championships", but out of his last fours trips to state he has been bounced in the second round by very close margins. Why, because he doesn't have any offensive plays to rely on down the stretch, nor does he ever have a timeout to set up anything. Put his antics to the side, doc is one of a few coaches that i have ever seen that nevers quits or throws the towel in. People might complain about him running up the score, or antagonizing a ref with little time left with a huge lead, but all he is doing is coaching. Non stop full effort at all times. It is a fact that he gets the most out of what he has. The only D-1 players he has ever had is Niki Arinze (Mr. Basketball, Wake Forest), DJ Harrison (aquanis, then Colorado), and Brandon Lockridge (walk on TSU). Doc has proven his greatness, but he is still one step away from being put in the class of great coaches, if he was as great as some speak about him he would have had a college job a long time ago.

I think DOC is a great coach this team is undersized and does'nt have not one major college propect and has given the two-time defending state champs fits and they also were a huge underdogs agaisnt Haywood and sent them home his stytle of coaching works great for his team because they do it well but he is different

Well I will throw my 2 cents in not that it is even worth that. Making it to the state tournmanent as a double A team from Nashville is pretty much a joke. MLK and David Lipscomb are gonna finish one two in their district 19 out of 20 seasons. Then your region is the absolute weakest in boys basketball in the state. (Not girls Tennis Jerk) So therefor, MLK and Lipscomb will be in the Substate almost every year. Chattanooga basketball is not what it used to be and the AA teams in district 5 are pretty weak other than McMinn Central. That being said, it is no major accomplishment getting to state traveling that road.

As for Doc, he is obviously a good coach if he has won 2 state championships. It just goes to show you that anything can happen once you get to the tournament.

It is a shame that his antics actually hindered his team in the Semi's against Bolivar. Having no timeouts as his team turned it over 4 straight possessions in the clutch cost him the game. Period. I don't care how you look at it...That is poor coaching.

By the way...What is that stupid stick he chews on and spits pieces all over the floor? What happens if he gets to the end of it? Do his teams have to do pushups at center court or something?

And another thing. Someone said he hasn't coached many major DI athletes. Doc probably would'nt want to coach them he would lose some of the attention and it does'nt seem like he could handle that.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Someone that actually realizes that DOC takes away attention from the most important thing, HIS PLAYERS. Maybe he doesn't have many big time athletes because he HOLDS THEM BACK. Sure, I believe in TEAM BALL. A good or GREAT coach, as many of you think DOC is, can bring out the great individual talent of a player and incorporate it into team play. Johnny Lee is a very good player, but doesn't get the credit he deserves. Sure, MLK was a little undersized when they played Bolivar, but athleticism between the two teams was very even. If you could not see that, then you did not watch the game very closely on Friday. Doc's style, or better put, his egocentrism, didn't help his team against Bolivar, it hurt it!

Doc might seem a little eccentric, but he is the BEST coach in the whole tournament, period!  The guy has won two state championships - get real all you losers.  Who cares if he jumps around - heck, if it works so what.  Off the floor, he is a great guy.  I thought the object was to win.  Is it? :justwrestle:

Losers? Do you still have that opinion now...after the tourney is over?

BEST coach in the whhole tournament? I have nothing at all against Coach Shelton, but did he take both a girl's and guys' team to the tourney? Leaving witha a Gold Ball for the guys and taking the girls to the 2nd round?

No. He didn't. But Rick Rudesill did. No offense at ALL against Doc...but open your eyes and give a little credit where it's due.

Regardless of his style of coaching...which may be successful at times, Bolivar still beat them. Whether it was 2 or 20.

And before you can say so, I'll be the first to say that it may be totally around next year. But 2 in a row isn't bad for the Bolivar Tigers and their Coach.

    • With Westview only losing one senior and returning Sims, they have to be one of the favorites in AA
    • Watched Westview at McKenzie Thursday and they surprised me. Without Evans (who was sick) and Brent (who had thumb surgery shortly after getting back from her ankle injury), they looked solid. I didn’t realize Gray from SF had transferred in. You have Sims, Gray, Brent, Trevathan, and Evans and that’s a solid 5. Then, you bring in Hayden and Rogers off the bench along with some other upcoming and they will be tough again this year!
    • Hmmmmmm doe dee doe doe……sounds like they are leaving Geenback faster than the lawnmower will go in fifth gear.  Hmmmm….. you can bet the lawnmower on that.
    • West looked solid...excited to see this young group excel
    • When you have a school that right at 200 kids only half are going to be male and to get 25% of them to come out for football is a very hard task. Take away an 8th grade syatem and your you have another hill to climb up. If 5 kids are actually leaving your not going to have enough for practice. Your only chances for wins would be against the weakest of weak teams. At one time Greenback had kids coming across the wall like the Mexican Border and now their leaving town before sundown. A hugh mistake was made on not hiring Ryan back because of his ties to the community and his ability to bring in the right kids, not run them off. The last coach failed because he wasn't one of community so they go out and do it again. I'm sure Coach Clemmer is a good person because I do know people that do like him but he is caught in the middle of a fan base that will not support him no matter what and it could lead to a disaster if that many kids are leaving the program. The person that caused all of this mess has no business on the school board and needs to stick with hiding in the bushes giving out speeding tickets to out of towners coming through.
