Anderson County @ Knox Catholic

Knoxville Catholic's Defensive Coordinator JJ Surlis predicted his defense will produce the goose egg against the Anderson County Mavericks this Friday nite.

Surlis was a co-host Wednesday morning on AM990, the Sports Animal and when ask by Dave Hooker if he would predict a win versus the Mavericks, Surlis hesitated, then said, "I'll predict they won't score any points."

Thoughts Mav fans???

The only thing I don't agree with is what he said about AC being the first test for Catholic. I saw LA -Catholic and it was a knock down drag out game. I don't think AC can play with Catholic like LA did but we will find out tonight.

You are correct, Livingston Academy was a major test for the Irish that they almost flunked! LA was a very good ball team with an extremely talented high school QB. I don't think AE, despite the score, was a walk in the park either.

Very true I forgot that Catholic beat them 21-0. LA plays AE tonight and hopefully we can play them a good game.Going on common opponets theory hopefully LA can play close to AE and Catholic should handle AC after they played Kingston to a 7 to 6 game. LA beat Kingston fairly easy.

Lots of turnover in the AC/Kingston and AE/Catholic games. They had a big impact on the turnouts.

Catholic does have a good football team and they did beat AE 21-0 but if you remember Catholic really did not move the ball on AE, AE pretty much gave them 2 touchdowns and as for AC, they are a decent football team, not as good as years past. I think Catholic wins 28 to 7. Kingston is like AC they are decent but you cant judge a outcome based on how close one team plays another.

Good Morning, ravinglunatic. Your post is very reasonable except for one point where you are in error. Catholic is smaller than other 3A schools and you are right, they are playing up because of the TSSAA multiplier rule for private schools. The wisdom of that rule is open to honest (and endless) debate on other forums, but it is the rule and it is being followed by Catholic. Catholic will never be a "zoned" school by its very nature (hence they have to play 3A rather than their natural division which would be 2A, I think)(makes you wonder why "open-zoned" and "magnet" public schools aren't treated the same) BUT, no Division I program is allowed to offer scholarships and Catholic does not. In fact, Catholic didn't offer scholarships when it was a DII school where they were allowed. This has been a misconception about Catholic and Notre Dame for years and it was a major factor in the difficulty those schools had in DII where they competed against schools that, perfectly legally, did recruit and did give scholarships. The vast wealth difference between small parochial schools like Catholic and ND, on the one hand, and the big private schools like McCallie, Christian Brothers, Baylor and MBA, for examples, made for a pretty tilted playing field in most sports.

Good luck to both teams tonight. It should be a great game.

hoya,

Thanks for the heads up. The thing is, evey team out there can only play the schedule that they have and win as many games as possible. All the bickering is just that, bickering and it all comes down to the game on Friday night. Should be a good one. Hats off to the kids. May the best team win.

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
